Factors influencing the educational aspirations of women pursuing a non-traditional career in law

Westbrook, Robert Charles January 1981 (has links)
The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to identify variables that can be used to describe women pursuing nontraditional careers; and, (2) to determine the individuals who had the greatest influence on the educational aspirations of these women. A questionnaire, based on a review of the literature, was constructed to identify descriptive variables and factors influencing non-traditional educational aspirations. A self-administered survey was distributed to all women students at a southern law school. The completed questionnaire was returned by 123 women (41%). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and two-way joint frequency distributions. The major findings were: 1. Both parents were equally as influential on the respondents’ educational aspirations, despite a markedly higher educational level indicated for the father. 2. Sibl rank was not a contributing variable. 3. Mothers were not used as role models by the respondents. 4. Parents and significant-others were equally as likely to be seiected as the most influential person in determining the respondents' educational aspirations. As the way in which the role of women in our society is viewed changes, the ·variables influencing the educational aspirations of women will continue to change. Researchers must be. aware of these shifts and not be satisfied with identifying influential variables at a given point in time. / Master of Science

Impetuses for First, Second, and Third Year Law Student Information Seeking Behavior, and Perception of Common Knowledge and Citation

Helge, Kris 05 1900 (has links)
This dissertation examined how previous information literacy training, law student gender, age, and previously obtained education affects first, second, and third year law students selection of information sources, their understanding of common knowledge, and their decision of whether or not to give attribution to these sources. To examine these factors, this study implemented a paradigm called the principle of least effort that contended humans in general tended to complete the least amount of work possible to complete presented tasks. This study sought to discover whether law students follow this same path of completing the least amount of work possible to finish presented tasks, and whether this behavior affects information source selection, citation, and understanding of common knowledge. I performed six focus groups and crafted and disseminated an online survey to examine these factors. Via this data collection, it was discovered that law students do exhibit some differences in understanding of citation and citation behavior based on age and their year in law school. They also exhibited some differences regarding common knowledge based on their year in law school, where they received their information literacy training, and where they attend law school. Yet, no statistically significant differences were discovered regarding where one attends law school and citation and source selection. Further this study revealed law students do follow this paradigm and seek the path of least resistance to accomplish law school assignments.

The Straw that Broke the Camel's Back? A Sociological Analysis of Marriage and Law School

McQuillan, Deanna Boyd 04 June 2007 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This Master's thesis is based on a qualitative study which aimed to understand the perspectives of married male and female law students and the ways in which they managed the interaction between law school and family life. The data was gathered from in-depth interviews with 23 married law students at an urban university. The spillover model was used to address both how being married impacts students' school experiences, as well as to look at how the law school experience influences students' families. In an analysis of marriage-to-school spillover, the married law students reported feeling that they were having a non-normative law school experience as a result of their marital and parenthood statuses and they often compared their experiences to that of an "unmarried other" group of more traditional students. In an analysis of school-to-marriage spillover, students reported various types of strains that resulted from missing out on parts of a perceived normal married life as a result of the demands of law school. Several key differences were noted between the ways male and female students handled the often competing demands of marriage, children, and law school. The implications for the families as well as for legal education are discussed.

PSYCHOLOGICAL DISTRESS IN LAW STUDENTS AND LAWYERS: IMAGINED, INGRAINED, OR INDUCED? (STRESS, PSYCHOPATHOLOGY, SCHOOL).

BENJAMIN, GEORGE ANDREW HOLMES. January 1985 (has links)
The anecdotal literature suggests that the process of legal education impairs the maintenance of emotional well being in law students. The purpose of this paper is to present the results of a cross-sequential research design to determine the effects of the law school process. Data was collected, using four standardized self-report instruments (Brief Symptom Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory, Multiple Affect Adjective Checklist, and Hassle Scale), on subjects prior to and during law school, and after graduation. Prior to law school, subjects expressed similar psychopathological symptom responses as compared with the normal population. Yet during law school and after graduation symptom levels were significantly elevated. The implications of these results are presented.

The novel tells the stories of 24-year-old Robin, her Aunt Paula, and Paula's boyfriend, Sam.
