Tool for conception, design and operation spacve for teaching engineering to encourage creativity and innovation.

Maria Alice Camargo Gonzales 17 June 2016 (has links)
The adequacy of teaching and learning spaces that encourage the development of professionals with skills in creativity and innovation and the development of collaborative work is increasingly found in reputable educational institutions and corporations in the country and abroad. They are environments designed or adapted to assist in the realization of activities in teams using different teaching-learning strategies with active and collaborative participation of students; environments equipped with technology and special furniture, used in accordance with dynamics that enhance the effectiveness and usefulness. However, there is little consolidated knowledge on how to conceive, design and operate these spaces in order to enhance learning. The main objective of this research is to develop a tool to determine the requirements and needs for setting guidelines for interventions, whether they are projects of new spaces or adaptations in existing built environments, and the operation thereof. This tool does not prescribe solutions, but helps stakeholders involved in the different processes to address issues such as categorization of spaces typology, physical, furniture, and equipment among several other factors associated with design and operation. The tool is directed at educational institutions and engineering courses. The research methods includes literature review, research in the use of space, course observation, interviews and technical visits, and a non-probabilistic survey, with faculty, staff and students of civil and environmental engineering courses at the Polytechnic School of the University of Sao Paulo. As a reference for the development of these tools similar spaces are presented from American institutions and initiatives in Brazilian institutions, primarily focused on engineering education, and also some cases of corporate environments and makerspaces. In addition to the tool, the research results in information on the characteristics and the use of appropriate environments to new teaching and learning strategies and tests the tool within spaces in the buildings that house engineering courses at the University of São Paulo.

Teaching Outside the Box: Student and Teacher Perceptions of Flexible Learning Environments Outside the 21st Century Classroom

Allison, Chelsea B. 05 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to ascertain student and teacher perceptions of the environment in which student learning takes place and their perceptions of how it has helped them in the cognitive and social domains. Data collected were through student and teacher perception surveys, student and teacher perception questionnaires, classroom observations, student focus group discussions, and teacher interviews. Themes that emerged from the data sources were student interactions, students' autonomy in personalizing their learning space, teacher perceptions of comfort in the classroom, and student perceptions of comfort in the classroom. The findings of this study point to four recommendations for educational leaders to ensure the effective implementation of new and dynamic learning spaces: (1) consult and support teacher and students, (2) provide professional development, (3) visit campuses and other learning spaces, and (4) add color. In order for real change to take place, teachers need to enquire about and embrace student preferences and allow for the discomfort that will be present when trying something new. Teachers must be willing to relinquish control of the learning experience for the student in order to allow for possibilities in personalized learning on the part of the student. They must risk initial failure in order to allow for greater successes in the long run.

Dyrna, Jonathan, Stöhr, Kjell, Zawidzki, Julia, Filz, Nicole 10 March 2022 (has links)
... Creating Library Learning Spaces that Support Twenty-First Century Pedagogy and Student Learning

Christoffersen, Deborah Lynn 17 June 2020 (has links)
University libraries struggle to keep up with rapidly changing technology and the associated change in teaching strategy. Most administrators and librarians are often not trained to assess space needs and struggle to reassign library spaces for non-traditional library use. As such, they often embark on expensive and time-consuming feasibility studies, using (typically) hard-earned monies to complete the research or to pilot a new space. What academic research library administrators and staff lack is an analysis tool for discovering and planning needed renovations and improvements in aging library facilities. The purpose of this research project was to determine how students use library spaces for learning in this new high-tech, hands-on education experience (i.e. synthesis of previous research); develop a tool that can be used by library staff to self-analyze existing academic library spaces, identifying areas that could be improved for student benefit (e.g. provide a checklist of potential learning spaces that institutions should carefully consider adding to their facilities); and provide some examples/case studies of potential facility improvements. The end result is a hierarchical self-analysis tool that merges space options, Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, and an example of library-user personas. It also provides some general cost guidelines, helpful construction tips, and a synthesis of exploratory questions related to strategy and space. The tool uses evidence-based design to facilitate important conversations, provide an organized checklist of various considerations, and be a quick reference for library administrators and facility managers as they navigate the world of twenty-first century pedagogy and student learning.

Promoting a positive learning environment : school setting investigation

Sithole, Njabulo 12 June 2018 (has links)
A positive learning environment is more important if students are considered to perform better in their schoolwork. The school environment the students attend mostly influences their performance. The school that each student attends sets its own pillars that promote students’ positive learning. This research study looks thoroughly at the schools climate, and socio-economic background of students. Most public schools have insufficient funds to run their day-to-day activities. One of the disturbing factor to promote learning environment is the class sizes are too big. The more funds a school receives, the better it performs because the school invests more in its resources. The teachers’ experience also contributes to students’ performance. Usually, the students who attend a school where more teachers have pastoral care tend to perform better. The research intended to investigate the causes and consequences of a school’s setting in promoting a positive learning environment and further discussed the benefit of positive learning environment in schools. The students’ success in their learning progress is determined by a positive learning and teaching environment. Generally, if there is a caring environment in the school set up, then that leads to the students obtaining good envisaged outcomes. The schools help the students achieve the good results, or alternatively, they could make the students fail. The students perform better in a positive learning environment that also is tantamount to personal student/teacher relationships. The findings of this study encourage the researcher to come up with new strategies that can be used to uplift the performance of students. / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / M. Ed.
