Managing absenteeism for improved productivity and cost-effectiveness

Lockhart, Janine January 2001 (has links)
Thesis (Mtech(Business Administration)--Cape Technikon, Cape Town, 2001 / The researcher identified an absenteeism problem at the Cape Technikon Library and sees the effect of it on a daily basis. It is a costly and disruptive problem and places unnecessary pressure on staff that are at work. From the outset, companies might not realise the cost of absenteeism until they actually measure it. Absenteeism of other staff members create various problems such as low morale, increased stress, break in team work, etc. between the staff that are at work. To reduce the absenteeism rate, certain measures and control systems should be put in place. Absenteeism can either be addressed by putting a reward system in place or making use of punishment contingencies, or using a combination of both. If staff members see that other staff members get away with excessive absenteeism, they will soon follow. Within the context of the Cape Technikon Library, a culture of absenteeism has been created and it is not easy to break that culture. This study considered possible reasons for the absenteeism as well as possible solutions. To improve productivity and cost-effectiveness, the Gross Absence Rate (GAR) should be less than 3% (Van der Merwe: 1988:25). According to Van der Merwe (1988:25) an absence rate of 10% is extremely serious and any absence rate of more than 5% should be regarded as an indicator of a situation needing further investigation. An absence rate of less than 3% can be regarded as satisfactory, although capable of furtherimprovement. On some days the absenteeism rate at the Cape Technikon Library is approximately 12%.

The Effects of Paid Leave Policies on Work and Elder Care

Kim, Soohyun January 2020 (has links)
This dissertation consists of three papers studying the relationship between paid leave policies and work and informal care outcomes among older workers. Paper one investigates whether different types of paid leave provided by employers are associated with the supply of elder care. Paper two examines the role of paid leave in determining labor market outcomes for older workers with a family member who experiences a health decline. Paper three analyzes the case in South Korea -- how leave policies influence labor market outcomes for older workers with a spouse who experiences a health decline.

The Impact of College Leaves of Absence on Labor Market Outcomes: Evidence from South Korean College Students

Kim, Ji hye January 2016 (has links)
Human capital has become a key driver of individual employment and economic growth over the past few decades. The Republic of Korea in particular has experienced rapid and sustained economic success due to a marked rise in educated human capital over the past thirty years, but this status has begun to falter as glaring inefficiencies in the South Korean educational system, particularly concerning higher education, have emerged. The high-performing academic curricula at Korea’s higher education institutions fail to reflect the needs of industries, and the subsequent high unemployment rate among university graduates has led to a high incidence of voluntary college leaves of absence (LOAs) aimed at acquiring and reinforcing those skills required by the labor market, suggesting that Korea’s educational progress and the labor market are not well matched. This dissertation is the first study aimed at understanding this voluntary break in college schooling while controlling for self-selection bias using propensity score matching (PSM) estimates. This study contributes to exploring the causal effect of a college LOA on labor market outcomes and heterogeneous effects across family background based on the 2011 Graduates Occupational Mobility Survey (GOMS), the results of which may be useful for policymakers. Distinguishing between engaging in a college LOA to gain skills or experience and engaging in an LOA because of financial difficulties, I find significant positive effects of a college leave of absence on earnings and employment status for college LOAs motivated by employment preparation for both males and females. Considering that there is high financial dependence on parents in South Korea, both for funding one’s education and for covering the monetary costs of taking a college LOA, there is a strong link between family socioeconomic status (SES) and access to extra career-related activities through a college LOA. Families with low SES do not have the same opportunities to participate in college LOAs for employment preparation as do high SES students. Although low SES students have higher heterogeneous effects of a college LOA to prepare for employment, students with low parental income have limited returns to education. The close relationship between parental wealth and the ability to invest in experience and on-the-job training through an LOA may play a significant role in achieving successful labor market outcomes. This means that college LOAs can become a new channel for intergenerational transmission of earnings and even social inequality. The impact of a college LOA due to financial difficulties on monthly income is not statistically significant for both males and females. However, statistically significant negative effect for males are found after controlling for work experience while enrolled in college, implying that student employment during college for male students who take an LOA for financial reasons has a significantly negative effect on wages in the labor market. This could be because the types of jobs that students might work may not be oriented toward labor market preparation and may even impede the development of increased human capital or have negative signaling properties, thus inducing negative labor market payoffs after graduation. Interestingly, even LOAs due to financial difficulties have a positive impact on female employment status. Given that South Korea has high barriers to labor market participation for women in South Korea, a college LOA contributes to a reduction in temporary female workers, indicating that more women are participating in the labor market with stable employment status.

Experiences of families towards psychiatric state patients during leave of absence in Lepelle Nkumpi, Capricorn District of Limpopo Province

Mathanya, Moloko Elizabeth January 2015 (has links)
Thesis (M.Cur.) -- University of Limpopo, 2015 / The purpose of the study was to investigate the experiences of families towards psychiatric state patients during LOA. A qualitative, phenomenological, exploratory, descriptive and contextual design was used. Non-probability sampling of the purposive type was used to explore and describe the experiences of families towards psychiatric state patients during LOA. Data were collected from ten (10) families by using semi-structured face-to-face interviews. Data were audio recorded and field notes were also written. Trustworthiness was ensured by applying credibility, transferability, confirmability and dependability. Transferability was ensured by utilizing purposive sampling to include participants. Confirmability was ensured by collecting data from the participants who have experience on the problem studied. Data were analysed qualitatively by using Tech’s open coding method. Results from the study shows that families experiences uncontrolled and disruptive behaviour from the psychiatric state patients during LOA. Guidelines for the study include: Families of psychiatric state patients should receive counselling and be involved in family therapy prior and after the psychiatric state patient’s LOA. Family members of psychiatric state patient experience emotional pain, therefore they need support from multidisciplinary team members to assist them to facilitate promotion, maintenance and restoration of their mental health as an integral part of their health. Recommendations include improvement of aspects in nursing practice, nursing education and nursing research. Key words: Experiences, family, psychiatric state patients, Leave of absence. DEFINITION

De formella styrmedlens roll i ambitionen att minska sjukfrånvaron : - en jämförelse mellan stora och små företag

Holst, Caroline, Ljungqvist, Caroline, Petersson, Elin January 1900 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to study and map out to what extent the use of management control systems vary between small and large companies in their ambition to decrease sick leave. Method: To fulfill the purpose of this study, we have used a deductive approach. We have conducted telephone interviews with 60 randomly selected consultancy companies within the accounting and legal field. The data has been analyzed using the computer software SPSS. Conclusion: We have come to the conclusion that the use of management control systems vary between small and large companies in three of four aspects, namely, the use of KPI’s, costs accounting and preventive measures.

The relationship between absenteeism and on site employer sponsored childcare

Anderson, Bronwyn 07 1900 (has links)
As the literature on work–family conflict grows and absenteeism increasingly comes into the spotlight, one cannot help but ask the question: “What is an acceptable absenteeism rate and how can an organisation control and manage absenteeism?” With current absenteeism rates as high as 12% and with an estimated R12 million lost per annum because of absenteeism, the idea of an on-site employer-sponsored childcare facility seems viable. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between absenteeism and on-site employer- sponsored childcare. The following dimensions of absenteeism will be examined over a period of a year: absence frequency, absence intensity, attitudinal absence and medical absence. The results of two companies, one with a facility and one without, will then be compared in order to establish the relationship between absenteeism and an on-site facility. To date, evidence remains mixed and the ongoing challenge of establishing real return on equity remains a major barrier to the support of on-site employer-sponsored childcare. / Industrial & Organisational Psychology / M.
