Enriching opportunities for people living with Dementia: The Development of a Blueprint for a sustainable activity-based model of care

Brooker, Dawn J.R., Woolley, Rosemary J. January 2007 (has links)
No / The aim of this paper is to describe the process of building a multi-level intervention called the Enriched Opportunities Programme, the objective of which is to provide a sustainable activity-based model for people with dementia living in long-term care. It is hypothesised that five key elements need to work together to bring about a sustainable activity-based model of care. These elements are specialist expertise-the staff role of Locksmith was developed as part of this programme; individualised assessment and case work; an activity and occupation programme; staff training; and management and leadership. These elements working together are known as the Enriched Opportunities Programme. This paper reports on the processes undertaken to develop Enriched Opportunities from its inception to the present, and focuses on lessons learnt from the literature, an expert working group and action research in four UK study sites. A blueprint for evaluation in other long-term care facilities is described.

Cloud Computing : Trends and Performance Issues

Al-Refai, Ali, Pandiri, Srinivasreddy January 2011 (has links)
Context: Cloud Computing is a very fascinating concept these days, it is attracting so many organiza-tions to move their utilities and applications into a dedicated data centers, and so it can be accessed from the Internet. This allows the users to focus solely on their businesses while Cloud Computing providers handle the technology. Choosing a best provider is a challenge for organizations that are willing to step into the Cloud Computing world. A single cloud center generally could not deliver large scale of resources for the cloud tenants; therefore, multiple cloud centers need to collaborate to achieve some business goals and to provide the best possible services at lowest possible costs. How-ever a number of aspects, legal issues, challenges, and policies should be taken into consideration when moving our service into the Cloud environment. Objectives: The aim of this research is to identify and elaborate the major technical and strategy differences between the cloud-computing providers in order to enable the organizations managements, system designers and decision makers to have better insight into the strategies of the different Cloud Computing providers. It is also to understand the risks and challenges due to implementing Cloud Computing, and “how” those issues can be moderated. This study will try to define Multi-Cloud Computing by studying the pros and cons of this new domain. It is also aiming to study the concept of load balancing in the cloud in order to examine the performance over multiple cloud environments. Methods: In this master thesis a number of research methods are used, including the systematic litera-ture review, contacting experts from the relevant field (Interviews) and performing a quantitative methodology (Experiment). Results: Based on the findings of the Literature Review, Interviews and Experiment, we got out the results for the research questions as, 1) A comprehensive study for identifying and comparing the major Cloud Computing providers, 2) Addressing a list of impacts of Cloud Computing (legal aspects, trust and privacy). 3) Creating a definition for Multi-Cloud Computing and identifying the benefits and drawbacks, 4) Finding the performance results on the cloud environment by performing an expe-riment on a load balancing solution. Conclusions: Cloud Computing becomes a central interest for many organizations nowadays. More and more companies start to step into the Cloud Computing service technologies, Amazon, Google, Microsoft, SalesForce, and Rackspace are the top five major providers in the market today. However, there is no Cloud that is perfect for all services. The legal framework is very important for the protection of the user’s private data; it is an important key factor for the safety of the user’s personal and sensitive information. The privacy threats vary according to the nature of the cloud scenario, since some clouds and services might face a very low privacy threats compare to the others, the public cloud that is accessed through the Internet is one of the most means when it comes the increasing threats of the privacy concerns. Lack of visibility of the provider supply chain will lead to suspicion and ultimately distrust. The evolution of Cloud Computing shows that it is likely, in a near future, the so-called Cloud will be in fact a Multi-cloud environment composed of a mixture of private and public Clouds to form an adaptive environment. Load balancing in the Cloud Computing environment is different from the typical load balancing. The architecture of cloud load balancing is using a number of commodity servers to perform the load balancing. The performance of the cloud differs depending on the cloud’s location even for the same provider. HAProxy load balancer is showing positive effect on the cloud’s performance at high amount of load, the effect is unnoticed at lower amounts of load. These effects can vary depending on the location of the cloud.

Pertinent legal issues and impediments fettering the successful prosecution of the crime of money laundering and its predicate offences in Zambia: proposed reforms

Chitengi, Justine Sipho January 2009 (has links)
Magister Legum - LLM / The law relating to money laundering is not a new branch of law although it seems to be just emerging in this modern era of advanced technology and organised crime. It evolved in the 18th century with the case of Rex v William Kidd et al1 from the so-called golden age of piracy. With the increase in the sophistication of the world economy, the techniques of money laundering have become correspondingly complex, leading to incoherent and uneven prosecutorial policies with regard to crimes related to money laundering. This is specially so in developing African countries like Zambia, where the legal system is still evolving on this terrain. Inevitably, a lot of pertinent legal issues and impediments remain unresolved, particularly when prosecuting highcalibred white collar perpetrators such as former heads of state.

Student Legal Issues Confronting Metropolitan Institutions of Higher Education

Elleven, Russell K. (Russell Keith) 12 1900 (has links)
This study examined perceptions of student legal issues confronting metropolitan institutions of higher education. The data for the study were collected using a modified version of Bishop's (1993) legal survey. The sample for the study consisted of 44 chief student affairs officers and 44 chief legal affairs officers employed with the 44 institutions affiliated with the Coalition of Urban and Metropolitan Universities. Frequency counts and percentage distributions were employed to analyze the data. Chief student affairs officers and chief legal affairs officers have very different perception as to the most likely student legal issues to be litigated in the next ten years. Chief student affairs officers found few student legal issues highly likely to be litigated in the next 10 years. Affirmative action, sex/age discrimination, fraternities and sororities, and disabled students were the only student legal issues at least 20 percent of chief student affairs officers believed to be highly likely of litigation in the next ten years. Chief legal affairs officers believed many student legal issues would be litigated in the next 10 years. At least 20 percent of the chief legal affairs officers believed admission criteria, affirmative action, reverse discrimination, sex/age discrimination, athletic tort liability, Title IX, defaulting student loans, defamation, negligence, academic dismissals, academic dishonesty, cyberspace issues, and disabled students to be highly likely of litigation in the next ten years. Chief student affairs officers and chief legal affairs officers prepare very similarly for future student legal issues they may confront in the future. There is a large amount of crossover between professional conferences of chief student affairs officers and chief legal affairs officers. Student affairs and legal affairs officers will attend professional conferences of both groups in order to stay abreast of student legal issues. It appears chief student affairs officers are not prepared to confront many of the student legal issues highly likely to be litigated in the next ten years.

Children with Autism in the People’s Republic of China: Diagnosis, Legal Issues, and Educational Services

Huang, Ann X., Jia, Meixiang, Wheeler, John J. 01 January 2013 (has links)
Since the late 1970s, special education in the People’s Republic of China has experienced significant reform and fast development. However, education for children with severe developmental disabilities, especially autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), is still the greatest challenge in the field. This paper aims to give readers an overview of what is happening to children with ASDs in China. We first address the issue of prevalence of ASDs, and then offer an introduction to the diagnostic process. After that, a review of disability-related legislation is provided, followed by a description of current treatment options and available educational services. Finally we introduce all extent service providers and their roles.

Special Education Teachers' and Speech Therapists' Knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Whaley, Carol Hendrix 01 December 2002 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to survey special education teachers and speech therapists in eleven school districts in Northeast Tennessee regarding their knowledge level (etiology and educational programming) of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The primary focus of the study was to identify effective programs and methods used by special educators in this region, comparing them to the latest techniques and teaching methods prescribed by recent research. In addition, identified weaknesses were used to recommend future training and staff development to enable educators to provide the best possible programs for children with autism. Five hundred fifty-two surveys were disseminated to special education teachers and speech therapists in eleven school districts in Northeast Tennessee. Two hundred ninety-two professionals responded to the survey, resulting in a return rate of 52.9%. Educators were asked to respond to a total of 44 questions (28 true/false items and 16 multiple choice items). The multiple choice items were designed to obtain demographic information, job related characteristics, preparation and experience teaching students with ASD, and professional needs of special educators in this region. The 16 multiple choice items were categorized into knowledge of ASD etiology and ASD educational programming. The results of the study indicate that there were no marked deficits in special educators' knowledge levels (etiology and educational programming) of ASD. However, the scores on educational programming were consistently higher than scores on etiology. There is a need for further training because very few special educators have been trained in research based methods currently used with students diagnosed as ASD.

Panua Partners in Hope, Naivasha, Kenya: Legal and Domestic Related Challenges

Holman, Keisha 01 May 2014 (has links)
The complexities of issues existing in Kenya create a domino effect directly affecting not only the effective management and economic growth of Kenya, but also social and legislative constraints to the lower socioeconomic classes. Land dispossession, proof of ownership to property and nationality are ongoing troubling issues affecting increased orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in Kenya, most noticeably within predominantly poverty stricken rural enclaves. This research focuses on the bold move of stakeholders of Trinity United Methodist Church in Naivasha, Kenya partnering with First United Methodist Church of Winter Park, Orlando, United States of America. In 2010, they conceptualized Panua Partners in Hope, a transformational ministerial assisted non-profit organization program. These churches recently established support to orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in Naivasha, Kenya. Decisively apply all their available resources to stem the varying issues these orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) are facing. Whereby, the program is designed to teach self-sufficiency, wealth creation through sustainable income generation and entrepreneurship, and religious relationship development. Continued education is a key component of which Panua mandates. Ongoing (learning) education ensures each child remain in school – (basic, primary and secondary school levels). In addition to ensuring orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) are legally aware of their civil, human and property rights. Conversely, these issues being perpetual worldwide challenges, however, the aim of this research is to specifically address its impactive progression on orphans and vulnerable children (OVC). Thus, outlining their local conditions, the provisions of governmental policies, and assistance, or lack thereof to remedy such current challenges. Additionally, the research will outline reformed constitutional statutes despite being ratified, have not addressed the major issues currently impinging on the freedom and rights of rural communities in Naivasha, Kenya.
