AplicaÃÃes dos princÃpios da gestÃo estratÃgica no Sistema de Bibliotecas da Universidade Federal do Cearà / Application of the principles of strategic management in Library of the University System of Federal CearÃ

KÃcia Silva Damasceno 31 August 2012 (has links)
Planning is a natural activity that frequently is intuitive in peopleâs lives; but, referring to the management of such a important sector as the University Library, which is essential to the development of teaching, researching and extension activities, we need the use of a structured management method through which it would be possible to make sure that the traced strategies can be translated into operational terms. The application of the principles of the Strategic Management in University Libraries was studied with an aim to evaluate if they really do exist and what are the methods of planning adopted by part of the managers of the System of Libraries (SB) the Federal University of Cearà (UFC). In this manner, they contribute, along with the presentation, a route of Strategic Planning with possible applications to the UFC System of Libraries. Such a study bases itself in the bibliographical, documental and field research, qualitative. One technique utilized in the collection of primary data, were two questionnaires that were structured with open and closed questions, including opinion scale based in the measure of Likert, applied to the actual direction of the SB/UFC and to the managers of the UFCâs libraries. The obtained were transcribed into graphics to better visualize the incidence of the answers. The Strategic Management model adopted in university libraries is indicated because it is a management model proofed as compatible with the activities developed by this type of informational unity. It presents the retrospective results of studies realized by the SB/UFCâs work team in which the strategic confirms the viability of the adoption of this management method, having, by means of valuations of the actual conditions, the base of the view of facts and events, that are indicators of the future, related through the analysis of market potential Strengths Weaknesses Opportunities Treats (SWOT) matrix, of the referred System. One can affirm, therefore, that such management method demonstrates highly inspiring results, consolidating the growth of the organizational management learning, in the pursuit of achieving levels of excellence amid the constant changes and the adequacy of the use of human and material resources available for the development of sector, that has as aim to consolidate as a basis to the teaching, researching and extension, through the constant improvement of the provided services to the academic community inside and outside the UFC.

Reframing the Academic Research Library in the U.S.: Perceptions of Change from Library Leaders

Stuart, Victoria L. 19 November 2015 (has links)
During the past five years (2010-2015), U.S. universities experienced a simultaneous downturn in financial support along with rapid changes in technology and increased demand for accountability. Academic libraries, among the most central and visible units in the university system, were often at the forefront of financial cutbacks and increased pressure to demonstrate both unit effectiveness and closer alignment with the overall institutional mission. Little research existed to document academic libraries’ changes during this volatile period in history, or how the role of the academic library as part of the university system evolved during this period. Through interviews with the library leaders at four public, doctoral, comprehensive research universities in Florida, and an examination of a variety of documents, artifacts, news sources, and electronic and other resources, this qualitative multiple case study explored how four academic libraries were reframed, using the analytic lens of Bolman and Deal’s (2008) theory of reframing organizations. The evidence from this study revealed these four libraries demonstrated engagement in strategic changes across all four of the frames of Bolman and Deal’s (2008) theory of reframing organizations to become innovative, agile, pro-active organizations closely involved in the academic enterprise of their parent universities, and with a reimagined sense of place and purpose as the symbolic heart of the campus. A clear understanding of the activities of these four libraries in reframing their organizations may better inform the future evolution of academic libraries in higher education.

Mellan bildningsideal och besparingskrav : En studie av Uppsala universitetsbiblioteks styrdokument 1999-2013 / Between Ideals of Bildung and Economisation Requirements : a study of Uppsala University Library’s Documents of Rule and Regulation 1999−2013

Kotka, Agnes January 2015 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate how structural changes are depicted as well as formally brought about in the documents of rule and regulation of Uppsala University and Uppsala University Library the years 1999−2013. Beside the documents of rule and regulation, also documents that is commenting on (or in other ways relates to) these are investigated. The study is based both in organizational theory and modern rhetorical theory. The results show that the University to a certain extent gained an increased possibility to micromanage the library’s working routines during the time span covered and the study traces the consequences this had on the library organization and reactions it evoked among the leaders and representatives of the library staff This raised a debate between representatives from the University library and its mother organization, the University, regarding at which level in the whole organization decisions regarding the library’s forms of funding and everyday praxis. In addition also the development at the University library at Lund University is more briefly surveyed, as a complementing picture. The thesis is a two years master’s thesis written at the Department of Archive, Library and Museum Studies at Uppsala University.

Focuses its foundations on the interrelations between Information Science and Management Science, which uses concepts of Discursive Administration, in order to furnish a dialogical perspective in the construction of new ways of working. From a case study in a private institution in Rio de Janeiro, and the literature review, identify aspects that can be taken as keys to the dialogue among the actors involved: INEP / MEC and its implicit reasons for serving higher education, taken from its assessment tools; librarians; and academic community, users (professors and students). These aspects provide support for professional practices reconfiguration in managing libraries of private higher education. The research result indicates a weakness in the administrative perspective of libraries and provides elements that can be used to reflection and starting points for a Discursive Management in Libraries Private Institutions of Higher Education / Esta pesquisa, que parte do referencial teórico da Teoria do Agir Comunicativo de Jugen Habermas, busca elementos para uma condução administrativa de bibliotecas em instituições privadas de ensino superior que favoreça uma administração contemporânea, tendo em conta os pontos de vistas e as expectativas dos principais interessados nesses serviços.

Genetic algorithms as a feasible re-planning mechanism for Beliefs-Desires-Intentions agents

Shaw, G. 05 1900 (has links)
The BDI agent architecture includes a plan library containing pre-de ned plans. The plan library is included in the agent architecture to reduce the need for expensive means-end reasoning, however can hinder the agent's e ectiveness when operating in a changing environment. Existing research on integrating di erent planning methods into the BDI agent to overcome this limitation include HTNs, state-space planning and Graphplan. Genetic Algorithms (GAs) have not yet been used for this purpose. This dissertation investigates the feasibility of using GAs as a plan modi cation mechanism for BDI agents. It covers the design of a plan structure that can be encoded into a binary string, which can be operated on by the genetic operators. The e ectiveness of the agent in a changing environment is compared to an agent without the GA plan modification mechanism. The dissertation shows that GAs are a feasible plan modification mechanism for BDI agents. / Information Science

The Information Environment of Academic Library Directors: Use of Information Resources and Communication Technologies

Koelker, Karen June 05 1900 (has links)
This study focuses on the use of information resources and communication technologies, both traditional and electronic, by academic library directors. The purpose is to improve understanding of managerial behavior when using information resources and communication technologies within a shared information environment. Taylor's concept of an information use environment is used to capture the elements associated with information use and communication within the context of decision-making styles, managerial roles, organizational environments, and professional communities. This qualitative study uses interviews, observations, questionnaires, and documents. Library directors participating in the study are from doctoral-degree granting universities in the southwestern United States. Data collection involved on-site observations with a PDA (personal digital assistant), structured interviews with library directors and their administrative assistants, the Decision Style Inventory, and a questionnaire based on Mintzberg's managerial roles. Findings show the existence of a continuum in managerial activities between an Administrator and an Administrator/Academic as critical to understanding information use and communication patterns among library directors. There is a gap between self-perception of managerial activities and actual performance, a finding that would not have surfaced without the use of multiple methods. Other findings include the need for a technical ombudsman, a managerial-level position reporting to the library director; the importance of information management as an administrative responsibility; the importance of trust when evaluating information; and the importance of integrating information and communication across formats, time, and managerial activities.

Identification of Remote Leadership Patterns in Academic and Public Libraries

Venetis, Mary Jo 08 1900 (has links)
Seminal works on leadership, including those in librarianship define a traditional model of interaction between leaders and followers without reference to the information technology-driven environment. In addition, remote leadership indicates a different model from the traditional model, one that is focused on the interaction of leaders and their staff through digital technology. Although leaders still use face-to-face interaction, due to varied work schedules or job responsibilities, they also recognize the need to lead employees remotely. Leadership studies in library literature have not addressed how library leaders use information technology to lead employees remotely, nor have these studies addressed remote leadership and remote employees, except for some articles on telecommuting. As a result, this research was conducted to address this gap, providing an exploratory foundation of emergent patterns of remote leadership with its associated leadership dimensions rooted in personality traits, behaviors, and skills. Quantitative and qualitative data were obtained from a small sample size of academic and public-library leaders in the United States who participated in a Web-based survey designed specifically for this study, limiting generalizations. Factor analysis was the principal methodology used to obtain findings. Its composite factor scores were also used in the t-test and chi-square analyses. This study identifies some emergent patterns of remote leadership in the library and information-science field, exploring whether library leaders use information technology to be effective remote leaders in a technology-driven environment, and whether existing leadership attributes could be identified as part of the remote-leadership model. Because this study's findings indicated that library leaders are not quite the traditional leader but are not fully integrated into remote leadership, it becomes apparent that they would function with a blend of both face-to-face and electronic interactions, due to the nature of library work. Additionally, this research revealed underlying issues and challenges faced by library leaders as they transition from a traditional-leadership model to a blended model of face-to-face and remote leadership. Future research could include increasing the sample size and response rate to conduct factor analysis properly, and conducting longitudinal studies.
