Evaluation of students' use of print and electronic resources at the University of Malawi College of Medicine.

The proliferation ofinformation available in electronic format has been perpetuated by rapid technological advances. Users have a choice between print and electronic resources. At the same time, the use of these resources is determined by what is available to the users and what the users prefer. Problems that users encounter when accessing these resources determine the use of print and electronic resources. The current study evaluated the use of, and preference for, print and electronic resources by students at the University of Malawi College of Medicine. The study population comprised 179 undergraduate students. A self-administered questionnaire was used to establish the students' use of, and preference for, print and electronic resources, reasons for their preferences and the problems they encountered in accessing print and electronic resources. An interview schedule was used to elicit background information from the College Librarian on issues of budgeting, technological infrastructure, licensing and copyright agreements, archiving and library staff and training. Questionnaire results were quantitatively analysed and presented in terms of frequency tables and graphs. Interview results were analysed qualitatively. The study findings show that the students used both print and electronic resources. However, print resources were more heavily used than electronic ones. The students also preferred print resources to electronic. A lack of sufficient computers and low levels of computer and information literacy contributed to the underutilisation of electronic resources. Recommendations in terms of technological infrastructure, user training, staff training, user support and archiving were made based on the findings of the study. / Thesis (M.I.S.)-University of KwaZulu- Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2005.

An investigation into the use of the Internet by students at St. Joseph's Theological Institute, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

The discussion of introducing the Internet at St. Joseph's Theological Institute in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa took place in 2002 and access to the Internet was introduced in 2003 via 70 computers which were housed in the library. Given that the Internet has emerged as an important learning tool at the tertiary level, the aim of the study was to investigate the use of the Internet by the students at St. Joseph's. The specific objectives of the study were as follows: to find out which students were using the Internet, to find out what students were using the Internet for, to find how often students used the Internet and when they used it, to find out the problems experienced by those students who used the Internet, to find out why certain students do not use the Internet, and lastly the study aimed to make recommendations concerning the use of the Internet by students. The survey research method was used and the data was collected through a self administered questionnaire. No sampling was done as the entire population of 188 students was surveyed. Sixty five students responded - a response rate of 34.6 %. Findings revealed that of the 65 students who completed the questionnaires 34 (52.3%) had used the Internet and 31 (47.6%) had not. Out of the 24 respondents who gave reasons for not having used the Internet, the majority 17 (70.8%) of respondents said that they had not received formal training and did not know how to use the Internet. The major problems facing the Internet users at St. Joseph 's were the shortage of computers mentioned by 13 (38.2%) respondents and computers being slow as indicated by 13 (38.2%) respondents. Six (17.6%) respondents also pointed to not having enough training in the use of Internet facilities. Mangosuthu Technikon Resource Centre and its involvement in the Umlazi community with particular reference to high schools : 1991-1997.

Academic libraries are concerned about being involved in the communities in which they exist by rendering library and information services. In order to maintain effective community involvement, academic libraries find it is important to find ways in which they can serve the community. The study investigated the Mangosuthu Technikon Resource Centre's (MTRC) involvement in the community. The intention was to determine the extent of usage of the MTRC services by Umlazi high school teachers and to identify problems which these teachers experienced with regard to the MTRC services. Umlazi high school teachers as users of the MTRC services and MTRC staff as providers of the services, were the two groups chosen for the study. Two questionnaires, one for external respondents, the Umlazi high school teachers, and another for the internal respondents, MTRC staff: were hand delivered to and collected from the respondents. The results of the survey indicated a very low percentage of usage of the MTRC services by Umlazi high school teachers and a high percentage of interest in and lack of knowledge of the MTRC services by Umlazi high school teachers. There was agreement of opinions between Umlazi high school teachers and MTRC staff on the reasons for non-use of the MTRC services by Umlazi high school teachers. Reasons indicated were that teachers did not know they could use the MTRC. There was a lack of promotional brochures and newsletters, and teachers obtained what they needed elsewhere. It was recommended that MTRC staff be educated on the MTRC's responsibility to community involvement; that the MTRC provide library user education to Umlazi high school teachers; that the MTRC base its services on community needs assessment; that marketing practices be injected into the MTRC services; that consultation with the community during planning stages of community services be maintained; that MTRC provide the community only with services not provided elsewhere; and that the MTRC take initiative in establishing a multitype area network with Umlazi Public Library and Umlazi high schools. / Thesis (M.I.S.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 1998.

Use of Instructional Resources by Community Junior College Occupational Instructors

The purpose of this study was to develop information and understanding concerning the use of instructional resources, including library materials, by community junior college vocational-technical instructors. The study sought to determine whether the kinds and amounts of instructional resources used by vocational technical instructors in their courses were related to their: (a) level of formal education, (b) number of courses in Higher Education completed, (c) years of teaching experience, and (d) teaching status (full or part-time). Further, the study sought to determine whether the attitudes toward use or non-use of the library were related to such instructor characteristics. The analyses of the data revealed that vocational technical instructors at Tarrant County Junior College utilized a wide variety of instructional resources in their courses. Instructional resources used in at least 50 percent of vocational-technical courses were: audio-visual materials, 88 percent; departmental books, 73 percent; personally owned books, 72 percent; manufacturers' literature other than service manuals, 63 percent; information from notes of previously taken courses, 63 percent; departmentally prepared syllabi, 58 percent; personally owned journals, 56 percent; self-prepared syllabi, 53 percent; manufacturers' service manuals, 52 percent; and association publications, 50 percent.

數位學習碩士班研究生線上學習、圖書館使用與學習成效之研究 / Study on Online Learning, Library Use and Learning Outcomes for E-learning Master’s Students

時至今日,透過網路,人們學習的管道更加多元,線上學習可以讓學習者有更多的選擇,本研究以我國數位碩士在職專班為研究對象,為線上學習者,又兼具學生與工作者兩種角色,與一般全職學生不管是在上課或使用圖書館情形上都有很大的差異。故本研究目的為:一、探討我國數位在職專班生的特質與數位學習經驗;二、探討數位在職專班生利用圖書館服務與電子資源情況;三、探討數位在職專班生評量教學成效、課程平臺與教材、與圖書館滿意度的看法;四、探討影響數位在職專班生學習成效的因素。期望能對數位在職專班生有更深一層的瞭解,提供更優質的線上學程以及讓圖書館為線上學習者提供更完善的服務,吸引更多潛在的使用者使用圖書館的資源與服務。 本研究透過訪談與問卷調查法的方式,分別針對六位數位在職專班生的訪談結果與196位數位在職專班生問卷調查結果進行分析,研究結果顯示:(一)數位在職專班生女性多於男性,平均年齡介於31歲至40之間,修習數位學程的原因會受到居住地與就職地的影響;(二)數位在職專生的自我效能高;(三)數位在職專班生修課動機為「自我追求」,且選擇線上課程時會考量家庭、工作與通勤時間等因素;(四)數位在職專班生使用大學圖書館的目的主要為:專題報告與課業學習需求,且多透過以網路的方式取用,並以使用電子資源的頻率最為頻繁,較少使用圖書館提供的虛擬參考服務。(五)數位在職專班生肯定教學成效且自評學習成效良好但對課程平台評價較低。(六)數位在職專班生對圖書館滿意度高。此外,本研究亦發現「教學成效」、「課程平臺與教材」、「圖書館滿意度」、「自我效能高低」、「年級」、「電子資源使用」皆與「學生自評學習成效」相關,意即當學生對這些因素感受愈高時,其自評學習成效會愈好。根據獲得之結論,本研究針對數位學程與圖書館兩方面提出建議。 / Nowadays, through the Internet, online learning provides learners with more accesses to gaining knowledge. Online students, usually, are different from common students regarding class situations and library use. The objects of this research are master’s students, who are online learners, and are on-the-job, unlike full-time students. The aims of this study are as follows: 1. To explore the characteristics and E-learning experience of E-learning master’s students. 2. To examine E-learning master’s students' utilization of library services and electronic resources. 3. To discuss students' instructional evaluaton and opinions on online course platforms, teaching materials, and satisfaction with libraries. 4. To investigate the factors that affect the learning outcomes of E-learning master’s students. Via interviews and survey questionnaires, this study respectively analyzes interview outcomes of 6 E-learning master’s students and questionnaire results of 196 E-learning master’s students, and the results and conclusions are as follows: (1) There are more women than men in the E-learning master’s students, of whom the average age is between 31 years old to 40, and the master’s students' sites of residence or their workplace play a dominant role in influencing them to choose digital curriculums. (2) The self-efficacy of E-learning master’s students is high. (3) The motivation of most E-learning master’s students is"self-seeking", and the E-learning master’s students consider their families, works and their commute time when selecting online curriculums. (4) Most E-learning master’s students' purposes of using university libraries are to prepare reports and to obtain learning resources, and they often use library resoueces through the Internet access, in addition, the E-learning master’s students most frequently use electronic resources, while less use virtual reference services of libraries. (5) The E-learning master’s students give recognition to the instructional effectiveness of E-learning curriculums and their self-perceived learning effectiveness is good, but they have less positive comments on online course platforms. (6) The E-learning master’s students have high satisfaction with libraries. Furthermore, this study also finds that: The "instructional effectiveness," "online course platforms," "satisfaction with libraries," "self-efficacy," "grade," and "utilization of electronic resources" are related to the "self-perceived learning outcomes of the E-learning master’s students".Based on the above finding, this study provides suggestions for both digital curriculums and libraries.

A model for service rendering to meet the information needs of South African artists

This dissertation analysed the information needs and information-seeking behaviour of visual artists. An empirical survey was conducted on a sample of the more informationliterate visual artists in South Africa. A model of the information environment of South African visual artists was developed. This model provides a basis for another model which represents the optimal service that should be rendered to meet the needs of this user group. It was found that the general information needs of South African artists are fairly adequately met, but that there are several shortfalls, especially in serving their more complex information needs. The most important problems are the lack of training in the use of information sources and services, inadequate marketing of services and inadequate coverage of South African art. It was also found that greater coordination between service providers is urgently required, especially in the provision of information about South African art. / M. (Information Science)

Ziel dieser Arbeit ist die Ermittlung des ökonomischen Wertes einer Öffentlichen Bibliothek in einer deutschen Mittelstadt. Dabei werden die Wertschätzung beeinflussende Faktoren identifiziert und die Einschätzungen der Bevölkerung (Bibliotheksnutzer und Nicht-Nutzer) mit der der politischen und administrativen Vertreter kontrastiert. Im theoretischen Teil wird der Forschungsstand zur Wert- und Wirkungsmessung dargelegt und in den Kontext der wirkungsorientierten Verwaltungsführung gestellt. Außerdem wird das Konzept der Lebensstile erläutert. Im empirischen Hauptteil wird eine schriftliche Befragung zur ökonomischen Wertschätzung der Stadtbibliothek Melle ausgewertet. Zwei parallele Umfragen richteten sich zum einen an Einwohner der Stadt Melle und zum anderen an politische und administrative Vertreter. Neben der ökonomischen Wertzumessung, ausgedrückt als Zahlungsbereitschaft (Anwendung der Kontingenten Bewertungsmethode), stehen die Aspekte Lebensstil-Typen nach Gunnar Otte, Bibliotheksnutzung, sowie die Stellung im Familien-/Lebenszyklus als beeinflussende Faktoren im Mittelpunkt der Auswertung. Die geäußerten Zahlungsbereitschaften der Bevölkerung und der Politiker werden verglichen. Es wird eine Relation von Zahlungsbereitschaft zu „Ergebnis je Einwohner“ (finanzbuchhalterische Kennzahl) als Indikator für die Wertschätzung gebildet. / The aim of this study is to determine the economic value of a public library in a medium-sized town in Germany. The factors influencing the value must first be identified and the population’s (both library users and non-users) appreciation must be compared with those of their political and administrative representatives. In the theoretical section of this study the current state of research in value and impact assessment will be explained and presented within the context of impact-oriented administration (New Public Management). The concept of lifestyles will also be explained. The main, empirical section of the study concentrates on the assessment of a written questionnaire (mail survey) on the economic value of the Melle Public Library. Two parallel questionnaires were conducted; one for the population of the city of Melle and one for their political and administrative agents. In addition to the economic rating of the library, expressed as willingness-to-pay (under application of the contingent valuation method) at the core of the assessment, the analysis focuses on the aspects of lifestyle types according to Gunnar Otte, library use and position within the family or life cycle as influencing factors. The expressed willingness-to-pay of the population will be directly compared with that of the politicians. A ratio of willingness-to-pay and the result-per-resident (an economic value) will be generated and thereby an indicator of value determined.

Information needs and information seeking behaviour of researchers in an Industrial Research Institute in Nigeria

The entire world needs and seeks information to survive and thrive in the 21st century as a result of information acquisition, with doctors, lawyers, teachers, students and even the elderly all desiring information for their everyday activities. Researchers of different disciplines working at the various federal institutes in Nigeria are no exceptions to the craving for requisite information that will enable them successfully carry out their numerous research projects undertaken towards achieving sustainable national development. The aim of the study was to investigate the information needs and information-seeking behaviour of researchers at the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi, Nigeria. This study applied both quantitative and qualitative research approaches for the purpose of triangulation. The quantitative approach had a strong dominance over the qualitative approach in this study. This study adopted the positivist paradigm. The questionnaire, interview and observation data collection tools were the chosen tools used to collect data from researchers from the six departments of the Federal Institute of Industrial Research Oshodi and five professional librarians of the institute’s library. Out of 165 questionnaires that were administered to researchers, a total of 121 were returned (resulting in a response rate of 73%). Inaccuracies were identified in seven copies of the questionnaires which were discarded and not analysed. Therefore, usable returns totalled 114 (67%). Wilson’s 1999 model of information behaviour was used as the theoretical framework. This study revealed that both formal and informal sources were consulted by the researchers. It was important to note that the internet was the information source most commonly used by the researchers to obtain information. The institute’s library was poorly used because it contained outdated library materials and was not equipped with an internet facility. The researchers opted for the use of mobile phone/iPad, personally owned or sourced internet access and business centres (supplying internet services outside the institute) to access information sources for information. The study ascertained that there was undoubtedly an instituted library officially established within the institute to provide information to researchers. But due to socio-economic and political problems faced by the country Nigeria, predominantly with respect to the outlook of poor funding of sustainable library development concerns and the government’s lack of interest in research, outdated library collections and poor information provision services have become the given at the institute’s library. This ultimately brought about pessimistic reactions from the researchers. Among its recommendations, the study suggested that funding the institute’s library in order to update and replace outdated library collections is a priority. An information audit should be carried out to ascertain the current state of ICTs within the institute and the institute’s library should be equipped with an internet facility promptly. Adopting these recommendations would enable researchers to have limitless access to items of information they need for research as they seek for information. / Information Science / D. Phil. Students' perceptions of the role of the library in their studies at Tshwane University of Technology, Polokwane Campus

The purpose of the study was to investigate students’ perceptions of the role of the library in their studies. A positivist research paradigm was employed and quantitative and qualitative research approaches were followed. The research design was a case study. Three sampling methods were used in the study. To obtain a sample of the students, stratified random sampling and systematic sampling were applied. In the case of the library staff, purposive sampling was used. Data was collected from students and a limited number of library staff using questionnaires and interview schedules respectively. The latter was for the purpose of validating and collecting complete data from students.The findings of the study revealed that students at TUT, PC have positive perceptions of the library and are satisfied with library services. The findings of the study further revealed that students find the library to be user-friendly and they use the library to borrow materials, read their own notes and books, access the internet and study. Factors, such as opening and closing hours, a conducive environment for studying, and knowledge of the library staff helps the library to contribute to students’ achievement outcomes. Moreover, the findings reveal that lack of resources, non-attendance of information literacy programmes by students, a lack of research support, and an inadequate infrastructure hinder the library’s contribution to students’ achievement outcomes. The research recommends that there should be a credit-bearing and compulsory information literacy programme offered as part of the curriculum at all levels of study at TUT, PC. Furthermore, library staff need to engage and interact well with students in order to better meet the needs of individual students.
