O serviço de disponibilização de e-books pelas bibliotecas universitárias: análise do ponto de vista da gestão de operações de serviços. / The e-book provision service of academic libraries: service operations management viewpoint analysis.

Bacalgini, Bruna 25 February 2016 (has links)
Academic brazilian libraries seek to provide access to electronic books (e-books), however, the use of e-books are less than expected in libraries, which brings us to the research problem: there would be problems in the production of service of availability of e-books in the academic library that affect the use of e-books in libraries? What types of problems may be related? This research aims to analyze the management of e-books in academic libraries, in order to better understand the use of e-books in the library and identify potential problems in the production of the service. From a case study of academic libraries of a public brazilian university and literature review, it was found that there are four main types of problems in e-book management: commercial, institutional, organizational and conceptual, which are directly related to the low use of e-books in academic libraries. The theoretical basis of management services identified the relationship between the need to revise the concept of academic library service together with the solution of specific management issues, advancing the understanding of the problem.

This paper focused on the possible implications of mobile devices on teaching and learning. The qualitative case study approach was employed in the study. Based on the finding from the analysis of the empirical data, a Framework was developed. The Framework could be employed to address the implications in the drive to enhance the services of academic library. Mobile learning has a lot of potential for quick and wide reaching out to the geographically wide spread of learners. Factors influencing the rendering of services in academic libraries

Hosana, Faith Rhulani January 2003 (has links)
Magister Bibliothecologiae - MBibl / In the field of user studies, very little research has been done on rendering of services in academic libraries. These services need to be examined in depth in order to be able to provide academic library users with more appropriate information services. There is clearly a need to determine what the real needs of academic library users are and how they prefer to look for information. The rapid growth of information technology could have a great influence on service rendering to academic library users.

The Information Environment of Academic Library Directors: Use of Information Resources and Communication Technologies

Koelker, Karen June 05 1900 (has links)
This study focuses on the use of information resources and communication technologies, both traditional and electronic, by academic library directors. The purpose is to improve understanding of managerial behavior when using information resources and communication technologies within a shared information environment. Taylor's concept of an information use environment is used to capture the elements associated with information use and communication within the context of decision-making styles, managerial roles, organizational environments, and professional communities. This qualitative study uses interviews, observations, questionnaires, and documents. Library directors participating in the study are from doctoral-degree granting universities in the southwestern United States. Data collection involved on-site observations with a PDA (personal digital assistant), structured interviews with library directors and their administrative assistants, the Decision Style Inventory, and a questionnaire based on Mintzberg's managerial roles. Findings show the existence of a continuum in managerial activities between an Administrator and an Administrator/Academic as critical to understanding information use and communication patterns among library directors. There is a gap between self-perception of managerial activities and actual performance, a finding that would not have surfaced without the use of multiple methods. Other findings include the need for a technical ombudsman, a managerial-level position reporting to the library director; the importance of information management as an administrative responsibility; the importance of trust when evaluating information; and the importance of integrating information and communication across formats, time, and managerial activities.

Exploring tablets for undergraduate schoolwork

Chung, Yoona January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Food Science / Delores Chambers / Electronic reading (e-reading) device has been available for decades and there are many studies that have been published based on those devices. However with continuously changing tablet marketplace, there is a lack of studies looking at current devices. In order to understand the effect of tablets on undergraduate students, we conducted a consumer study to: 1) Determine the most beneficial tablet size for college students in their academic pursuits and 2) Determine the necessary types of support from academic libraries for college students conducting schoolwork using a tablet. An initial focus group study guided a consumer survey of 121 undergraduate students. The focus group study identified reading and note taking as key academic activities for tablet users. The participants were also interested in receiving quick help from the library and using electronic journal articles available from the library. A consumer survey took place at a university campus a month later. Each survey respondent answered a set of questionnaires using both large and small tablets of either Android or iOS operating system. The survey data showed that overall, larger tablet was preferred for academic use. Tablet size was not an important factor in reading or note taking (P ≥ 0.05) but perceived portability of a tablet size increased preference for that tablet size (P = 0.0078). In addition, the library’s instant messaging feature was found to be equally successful in both full and mobile website when viewed on a tablet (P ≥ 0.05). Many students who use HTML only or both HTML and PDF formats to view electronic journal articles when on a computer switched to PDF only when on a tablet. Our findings can assist tablet manufacturers in making a suitable tablet targeted for higher education uses. This study can also guide academic libraries in improving accessibility to resource for a growing number of undergraduate tablet users.
