Dieser Ausspruch von Jorge Luis Borges wurde bei der feierlichen Eröffnung des neuen Bibliotheksgebäudes der Hochschule für Technik und Wirtschaft in Dresden am 12. Dezember 2006 gleich von zwei Rednern zitiert. Ein gutes Omen, eine treffende Formulierung und gewiss eine Beschreibung des Gemütszustandes der 13 Mitarbeiterinnen, Mitarbeiter und Auszubildenden der Bibliothek an diesem denkwürdigen Tag. Endlich war man am Ziel. Das jahrelange Bemühen um ein neues, größeres, den Ansprüchen des neuen Jahrtausends gerecht werdendes Gebäude hatte sich gelohnt, der Neubau wartete auf seine ersten Nutzer. Der imposante Bau mit der innovativen Haustechnik, die fast vollständig in Freihand aufgestellten Medienbestände, die vereinfachten Zugangsmöglichkeiten zu den elektronischen Medien und Datenbanken, die zahlreichen Arbeitsplätze sowie die Verwendung der hoch modernen RFIDTechnologie sprechen für die Attraktivität der neuen Bibliothek. Bis zur Erreichung dieses Zieles musste ein weiter Weg zurückgelegt werden.

Tikslui pasiekti išanalizuotas bibliotekininko edukatoriaus poreikis besimokančioje visuomenėje bei apibrėžta bibliotekininko edukatoriaus samprata, vaidmuo, gebėjimų visuma ugdant informacinį raštingumą; nustatyta dabartinė bibliotekininkų edukatorių rengimo būklė, susiejant ją su besimokančios visuomenės poreikiais bei sukonstruotas bibliotekininko edukatoriaus ugdymo koncepcinis modelis; įvertintas bibliotekininko edukatoriaus ugdymo koncepcinio modelio validumas realioje aplinkoje ir pasiūlytas šio modelio praktinis taikymas profesionalius bibliotekininkus rengiančioje aukštosios mokyklos studijų programoje. The dissertation is aimed at theoretical substantiation and framing of the conceptual model of librarian-educator’s training within the university study programme designed for the training of professional librarians. Pursuing the above-stated objective the need for librarians-educators in the learning society has been analysed and the concept, role and set of competences necessary for the development of information literacy have been defined; current situation in librarian-educator’s trainings has been identified coupling it with the needs of the learning society and the conceptual model of librarian-educator’s training has been framed; the validity of the conceptual model of librarian-educator’s training in real environment has been evaluated and practical application of the said model within the framework of the university study programme aimed at the training of professional librarians has been proposed. O objetivo da pesquisa é avaliar a contribuição das ferramentas de redes sociais da Web na melhoria da comunicação e da qualidade dos serviços e produtos das bibliotecas universitárias. A pesquisa é de caráter exploratório com abordagem quantitativa e qualitativa, por meio da aplicação de questionário às bibliotecas da UNESP, UNICAMP e USP e de entrevista a uma amostra de bibliotecas dessas instituições. Os resultados revelam que as bibliotecas estão, ainda, em um estágio de experimentação com relação à utilização das redes sociais. Verifica-se que as ferramentas possibilitam novas formas de comunicação e de divulgação de informações, serviços e produtos para as bibliotecas, bem como de capacitação para seus usuários, o que resulta em inovações e agrega valor aos processos já existentes. Ao mesmo tempo, entende-se que as redes sociais não se caracterizam apenas como espaços de comunicação e divulgação, mas também de participação, colaboração e interação algo ainda, pouco explorado pelas bibliotecas consultadas. Apesar disso, acredita-se que as redes sociais podem contribuir na melhoria da comunicação e da qualidade dos serviços e produtos bibliotecários. / The objective of this research is to evaluate the contribution of social networking sites of the Web in improving communication and the quality of services and products offered in academic libraries. This is an exploratory research with quantitative and qualitative approaches. We have submitted questionnaires to the libraries of UNESP (São Paulo State University), UNICAMP (University of Campinas) and USP (University of São Paulo) and conducted interviews with a sample of libraries of these institutions. The results show that the libraries are still experimenting with the use of social networks. We have observed that the tools provide new forms of communication and dissemination of information, services and products for libraries, as well as build capacity for the users. This results in innovations and adds value to the existing processes. At the same time, we have understood that the social networks are not characterized only as spaces for communication and the dissemination of information, but also of participation, collaboration and interaction, all of which are still little explored by these libraries. In spite of this, we believe that social networks can contribute to the improvement of communication and the quality of services and products offered by libraries

O ensino universitário tem buscado cada vez mais formar profissionais com espírito crítico e reflexivo, aproximando-os da realidade desde seu estágio como estudante. A biblioteca universitária tem sido vista freqüentemente como ambiente de apoio às atividades de ensino, pesquisa e extensão na academia. Entretanto, é também sua função, contribuir para a inserção do estudante no universo da pesquisa acadêmica, desenvolvendo atividades de mediação junto ao usuário nos processos de busca da informação para que ele tenha condições de transformá-la em conhecimento. Considera-se a importância da Biblioteconomia e da Ciência da Informação dialogarem com outras áreas do conhecimento tais como a Educação, a Metodologia Científica e a Psicologia. Abordam-se os conceitos de informação e conhecimento, biblioteca universitária, estudos e educação de usuários. Objetiva-se discutir o papel do bibliotecário na educação de usuários, entendendo a biblioteca como espaço de aquisição do conhecimento. O estudo é baseado no processo construtivista de busca de informação (ISP) de Carol Kuhlthau. A pesquisa é de caráter exploratório com abordagem qualitativa através de entrevistas com alunos de graduação e pós-graduação de faculdades das três áreas do conhecimento, Humanas, Biológicas e Exatas da Universidade de São Paulo. Ao final da análise conclui-se que há necessidade e espaço para que e a biblioteca universitária possa tornar-se ambiente propício a colaborar na aprendizagem do estudante universitário. / The learning process at the university has been increasingly trying to develop reflexive and critical professionals, offering them a close contact with the reality since their intern period as students. The academic library has been seen frequently as an environment to support learning, research and additional studies activities at the academia. Nevertheless, it also has the role to contribute to the student immersion on the academic research, developing activities as a medium for its users to search for information so that they could transform it in knowledge. It is taken into consideration the importance of Librarianship and Information Science to dialogue with other areas as Education, Scientific Methodology and Psychology. This paper deals with the concepts of information and knowledge, academic library, users studies and learning. Its goal is to discuss the role of the librarian in relation to its users education, understanding the library as a place to acquire knowledge. The study is based on the constructive Information Search Process (ISP) from Carol Kuhlthau. The research has an exploratory character with qualitative approach through interviews with students from graduation and post graduation from three fields: Humanities, Biological and Exact Sciences from Universidade de São Paulo (Sao Paulo University). By the end of the analysis, it is concluded that there is a need and space for the university library to become an environment proper to collaborate on the knowledge of the university student.

Communities of practice : an essential element in the knowledge management practices of an academic library as learning organisation

Communities of Practice have been utilized with great success by organisations in the business and manufacturing sectors to help in the management of their knowledge. Not much research have been done on their application in learning organisations such as academic libraries, however. The aim of this study was therefore to determine how knowledge can be managed through Communities of Practice in a learning organisation such as an academic library. The investigation was build around the concepts knowledge management, learning organisations and Communities of Practice and the interrelationship between these concepts. The role Communities of Practice play in the management of knowledge in a learning organisation is investigated as well as the development stages in the implementation of Communities of Practice to support knowledge management. This is followed by an investigation of the factors critical to the success of Communities of Practice in a learning organisation. The investigation consisted of a literature study to help define the key concepts and to lay a framework for the research design, and is followed by an empirical study where interviews were held with some of the staff members of the Academic Information Service (AIS) of the University of Pretoria, South Africa. In conclusion it was found that the AIS was considered a learning organisation and that the AIS was in the beginning stages of knowledge management. A number of Communities of Practice in the AIS were identified that existed internally and externally, and the small number of internal Communities of Practice in the AIS were linked to specific inhibiting factors. The study also showed that Communities of Practice can be found in learning organisations, and that learning organisations are characterised by knowledge management. Knowledge managed through Communities of Practice was also shown to help in the development of learning organisations. Communities of Practice in the AIS were shown to be in the beginning stages of development. Social Media and the Provision of Library and Information Services at the University of Limpopo Library

Thesis (M.Inf) --University of Limpopo, 2019. / The use of social media (SM) tools in both public and private institutions is growing remarkably. Academic libraries, in particular are confronted with serious challenges of becoming the leader in adopting various SM platforms to enhance the delivery of library and information services to their users. This study investigated the extent and ways in which librarians attached to the University of Limpopo library use SM platforms in the provision of library and information services to their patrons. The study examined types of SM tools used, purposes that SM tools are used for in academic libraries, factors that determine and impede the use of SM, as well as the attitudes of the library staff towards the use of SM in providing library and information services. The study adopted a qualitative research approach through the use of a semi-structured interview (administered face-to-face) with 10 academic librarians at the University of Limpopo (UL) as a data collection method. The findings of the study show that UL library staff largely use SM platforms such as Facebook to market and promote library services as well as Library-Blog to liaise with the schools or faculties. The study further revealed that librarians at UL are not in charge of SM applications. Instead the Marketing and Communication Department administrator is responsible for the management of SM in the university. The study notes that library personnel are aware of various SM platforms. Therefore, it has a direct influence on their use in work-related tasks. Moreover, the ease of use, low cost, high demand and usefulness of SM applications are contributory factors which motivated the librarians to want to use it. The study further reveals factors that inhibit the effective use of these applications and recommends that library management should create SM policies to boost the effective use of SM for the benefit of library patrons.

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to examine the professional identities oflibrarians with special focus on User Experience (UX). To achieve this aimwe have used the four professional identities described by Jenny Lindberg,the communicative identity, the technical identity, the academic identity andthe conservative identity. We have interviewed seven librarians at fivedifferent academic libraries in Sweden that works with UX. In the analysis ofour empirical material we found that the identity most represented among theinformants was the communicative identity while the conservative identitywas seen by the informants as their anthesis. Furthermore we added apotential fifth identity, the progressive identity.

The thesis deals with selected theoretical fundamentals of information literacy, which are followed by an analysis of the situation of teaching information literacy at the 2nd Faculty of Medicine at Charles University in Prague. The objective of this thesis is to describe the whole process of participation of the Department of Science Information at the 2nd Faculty of Medicine in the process of information education. First the thesis gives information on a theoretical level about basic terminology and information literacy from a medical point of view. The thesis also shows the results of questionnaire surveys held by the IVIG Committee focused on the activities of university libraries in the field of information education. No less important is also a chapter devoted to a librarian in the role of a lecturer. a chapter devoted to information education at other universities in the Czech Republic ensues. The practical part contains a presentation of teaching at the 2nd Faculty of Medicine where the library participates. Individual subjects are described in detail in the mentioned part. Some recommendations for improving the actual teaching are formulated in the conclusion.
