The North American species of Smilacina

Galway, Desma H. 01 May 1945 (has links)
This paper is the result of a taxonomic study of the species of the genus Smilacina occurring naturally in North America north of Mexico. In the past it has been difficult to make satisfactory determinations of members of this genus from existing manuals, especially among western forms. West of the great plains the great diversity in environmental conditions has given rise to a diversity in form of the species that are widely distributed. Many of these forms have been given specific or varietal names recently, and as no comprehensive work on the genus has been done since most of these were published, it is hoped that this study will be generally helpful in identifying members of the group. During the preparation of this work over 2500 herbarium specimens have been examined and annotated and comparative measurements made of many of these. Specimens have been examined from all of the forty-eight states except Louisiana and Florida, also from Canada, Alaska, Mexico, Central America, and Asia. Field work has been comparatively limited.

Investigation into "bud blast" in the Easter lily (Lilium longiflorum Thunb)

Mason, Michael Regis, 1962- January 1989 (has links)
Ethylene and carbohydrate deprivation were investigated as possible causes of bud abortion in Lilium longiflorum Thunb. Silver thiosulfate (STS) was investigated as an inhibitor of ethylene-induced abortion. Fourteen days of 92.5% irradiance reduction increased bud abortion when plants were exposed to 2.07 mM ethephon. Percent bud abortion was 39% and 60% for plants grown in full irradiance and reduced irradiance, respectively. Ethephon resulted in 54% abortion, regardless of irradiance at 4.15 mM. A 70% irradiance reduction for 14 days did not increase bud abortion when plants were treated with ethephon. STS was applied to plants at visible bud +2 weeks followed by ethephon application 2 days later. Bud abortion was reduced from 69 to 13% with 2 mM STS; the STS x ethephon interaction was significant. STS inhibited ethephon-induced bud abortion when applied at visible bud, 4 weeks prior to ethephon application; However, STS application at flower bud initiation did not prevent/reduce ethephon-induced bud abortion.

Efeito da vibração na qualidade de lirios orientais em vaso / Efects of vibration on quality of pot lities

Lopes, Tais de Oliveira Pelegrina 13 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Antonio Carlos de Oliveira Ferraz / Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Engenharia Agricola / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-13T08:10:41Z (GMT). / Abstract: In Brazil losses of agricultural products during production and commercialization can reach up to 30% due to mechanical damages during harvest, transportation and storage, resulting in non-commercial quality products. The inadequate conditions of transport are related to lack of awareness of most chain segments, roads in bad conditions, drivers proper training and interruption of the cold chain. The flowers and ornamental plants sectors have been important for the Brazilian economy in the last years due to the high volume of production and trade of cut and pot flowers. Pot lilies are exposed to mechanical stress such as vibration during transportation resulting in mechanical damages in plant tissues affecting the physiological response and shelf life. The packages in which the flowers are transported and how they are handled seem not appropriate to guarantee the quality of the product. The objectives of this work are to identify the types of mechanical damages generated by vibration, during road transport simulation using oriental pot lilies 'Muscadet'. A shaker was used and it was suggested a new grading criteria to judge appearance. A color change study was also performed to investigate the use of color indexes as ripeness indicator and aging. A colorimeter was used. Buds and flowers were subjected to vibration and compared to non-vibrated using 4 treatments and 20 pots per treatment. Mechanical damage was identified 24 hours after vibration. Appearance evaluation considered turgidity loss, brightness, petal color change and stem bending. Mechanical damage in the lily flowers and buds are expected to be detected together with their effect in flower blossoming and shelf life. It was concluded that vibrations do affect plant quality and that the grading scale proposed was effective in discriminating differences during storage. It is recommended to transport lily plants in the bud stage than the flower one since damage is reduced. / Mestrado / Tecnologia Pós-Colheita / Mestre em Engenharia Agrícola

Sabaliauskaitė, Lina 16 June 2014 (has links)
Magistrantūros studijų baigiamajame darbe pateikiami lelijos (Lilium L.) morfogenezės indukcijos in vitro tyrimų duomenys. Darbo rezultatai. Lelijų mikrosvogūnėlių formavimosi dažnį in vitro lemia augimo reguliatorių ir genotipo sąveika. Tos pačios lelijų veislės pasižymi skirtinga regeneracine galia, priklausomai nuo maitinamosios terpės sudėties. Iš tirtų veislių didžiausia regeneracine galia pasižymėjo veislės ˈRed Beautyˈizoliuoti eksplantai. Veislių ˈWiener Blutˈ ir ˈNo Limitˈ mikrosvogūnėlių regeneracijai in vitro maitinamąją terpę tikslinga papildyti 1,0 mg l-1 BAP + 0,3 mg l-1 2,4-D deriniu. Augimo reguliatorių derinys 2,0 mg l-1 BAP + 0,3 mg l-1 2,4-D labiausiai skatino veislės ˈRed Beautyˈ mikrosvogūnėlių susiformavimą. Veislės ˈSėkmėˈ izoliuoti eksplantai mikrosvogūnėlius formavo intensyviau augimo reguliatorių derinio 3,0 mg l-1 BAP + 0,3 mg l-1 2,4-D poveikyje. Intensyviausiai šaknis in vitro formavo veislių ˈRed Beautyˈ ir ˈWiener Blutˈ mikrosvogūnėliai. / The master work presents the results of increasing of lilies induction of morphogenesis in vitro studies. Object of the work: lilies (Lilium L.) cultivars of ˈRed Beautyˈ, ˈWiener Blutˈ, ˈSėkmėˈ, ˈNo Limitˈ. Methods of the work: Explants were cultured on the MS regeneration medium supplemented with macro salt concentration which is reduced to 0.5 of the initial concentration level, with different combinations of growth regulators. Evaluated for micro bulbs and root formation rate (%) and micro bulbs quantity of explant (units). The results of work. Lilies microbulbs formation in vitro is determined by the frequency of growth regulators and genotype interactions. The same varieties of lilies are characterized by different regenerative capacity, depending on the composition of the nutrient medium. Among investigated cultivars the highest morphogenic potention distinguished isolated explants of ˈRed Beautyˈ. For micropropagation of cultivars ˈWiener Blutˈ and ˈNo Limitˈ most suitable is medium supplement by 1,0 mg l-1 BAP + 0,3 mg l-1 2,4-D combination. Growth regulators combination 2,0 mg l-1 BAP + 0,3 mg l-1 2,4-D influenced cultivar ˈRed Beautyˈ. All isolated explants of cultivar ˈSėkmėˈ formed microbulbs on medium with 3,0 mg l-1 BAP + 0,3 mg l-1 2,4-D. The most intensive roots in vitro formed microbulbs varieties of ˈRed Beautyˈ and ˈWiener Blutˈ.
