The Berlin Crisis of 1958/59: A Case of Pragmatic Restraint

Williamson, Richard D. 22 May 2006 (has links)
This paper examines the 1958-1959 Berlin crisis as a diplomatic experience, conducted by the U.S. and U.S.S.R as an alternative to war. Both nations had nuclear weapon capabilities that could transform a local conflict into general war. The potential for disaster, plus other limits, made a series of diplomatic encounters the only productive option. The diplomatic course also shielded American and Russian interests indirectly related to the conflict. Each nation and its leader had pragmatic reasons for practicing restraint. These included conservation of assets, political stability, and most importantly, poor chances for sustainable gains. Limited war doctrine was influential in establishing these policies.

Modernization of the Indian Air Force: security implications for South Asia

Dominguez, Edgar M. 03 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release; distribution is unlimited / This thesis analyzes the Indian Air Force's (IAF) robust modernization campaign and explores why the IAF is on the path to transforming itself from an air force dedicated to air defense to one capable of global force projection. The stunning examples of airpower in the two Gulf Wars, Kosovo, and Afghanistan proved to the Indian leadership the value of modern airpower. Thanks to the amazing growth of the Indian economy, the IAF is gradually acquiring the weapon systems characteristic of a global aerospace force. Pakistan and China are concerned about the motivations behind IAF's modernization efforts and already have begun to improve their own air capabilities in response to any conventional or nuclear contingency. The responses of Pakistan, in particular, indicate the lowering of the nuclear threshold in South Asia. On the other front, a potential arms race between India and China is anticipated. The United States may be able to neutralize the damaging effects of India's military build-up by increasing its arms exports to both India and Pakistan. Specifically, the sale of American F-16s to both countries would fortify bilateral relation with the United States, maintain the fragile security balance in South Asia, and minimize China's influence in the region. / Captain, United States Air Force

Dynamic interaction in a limited war : A single case study of the Russian-Ukrainian dynamic interaction in the conflict in eastern Ukraine

Doverholt, Tobias January 2022 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to explore the dynamics interaction between Russia and Ukraine in 2014-2015 to explain why the limited war did not escalate into a major war, which could also provide an explanation for the stalemate in the conflict today. This thesis argues that existing literature has not thoroughly examined the dynamic interaction between Russia and Ukraine. The theory of escalation was applied to the case, which focuses on salient limits in conflicts. By using qualitative content analysis, this thesis presents an analysis of the escalatory steps undertaken and the salient limits that Russia and Ukraine signalled to each other in the conflict. The main findings of this thesis suggest that neither Russia nor Ukraine wanted a major war. Both Russia and Ukraine took careful actions to keep the conflict within its salient limits that the states had agreed on through the bargaining process. Russia demanded that Donbas would remain an integral part of Ukraine. Therefore, it is likely that Russia only had the aim of destabilising Ukraine through the separatists to prevent Ukraine’s incorporation with the West and NATO.
