A Linguistic and textual analysis of classroom english interaction at Al-thadi University in Libya

Eldokali, Elsanosi Mohamed January 2007 (has links)
Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / This study uses an interdisciplinary approach in the analytical framework combining Systemic Functional Linguuistic theoty (SFL) (Martin 1992; Halliday 19994) and critical discourse analysis (CDA) (Wodak 7 meyer 2001; Fairclough 1989, 1993, 1995, 2001). Further, the study draws on christie's (1997, 2001, 2002, 2005) work on classroom discourse analysis, which in turn builds on Bernstein's (1990, 1996, 2000) model on pedagogic practice and interaction, to examine dominanceand power relationsin the classroom. The interdisciplinary approach enabled this study to evaluate Al-Thadi university students' English language competence, linguistically and textually. / South Africa

The second language acquisition of the mandarin potential complement construction

Cong, Stella Yan 01 December 2014 (has links)
The Mandarin potential complement construction is a language specific structure. This is different from most of the languages in the world including English where modal notions are expressed by modal verbs and auxiliaries. It is a syntactic construction used to convey potential possibility in Mandarin and Cantonese. The various behaviors of the modal expressions in these three languag,i.e., English, Cantonese and Mandarin, raise interesting questions in second language acquisition research. The present study aims to explore how Cantonese speaking learners and English speaking learners process the Mandarin potential complement construction. Acceptability judgment test and corpus study were conducted to examine typical learning difficulties and essential acqu isition patterns in the course of acquiring the Mandarin potential complement construction. Given that the Mandarin potential complement construction is less marked than the Cantonese counterpart but more marked than English modal expressions, I hypothesized that Cantonese speaking learners wou ld have more native-like performance than English speaking learners. Surprisingly, this hypothesis was not completely confirmed in the present study. I will spell out the subjects, performance from the perspectives of language transfer theory, markedness theory and subset principle theory.

Jazyková analýza barokního textu / Linguistic analysis of baroque text

NOVÁKOVÁ, Marie January 2008 (has links)
The main intention of this dissertation The linguistic analysis of a baroque text is to present some from charakteristic signs of Czech language of 17th century. I have keeped at disposition a copy of the text Cvičení v dokonalosti a ctnostech křesťanských (The Exercising of Christian perfection and quality). Thist text of Alphons Rodericius was translated by the priest and linguist Jiří Konstanc and printed in 1664. In my work I get some informations about morphology and syntax of the baroque czech language and compare them with the present situation. There are many differences between baroque and present Czech language, for example the ending {--}ův in plural masculines or some forms of possessive adjectives. We can find many differences also by the conjunctions, e.g. anobrž, alebrž, an. In the syntax level we can see an effect of Latin or German. There are many complicated sentences, the verb stands often at the end of a sentence. We can find many other examples. At the end of this work I bring a small dictionary, where I make clear some words, which can make problems. This work doesn´t bring comprehensive informations, there are many other problems in this religious text.

Canterburské povídky v českém překladu Františka Vrby: lingvistická analýza / The Canterbury Tales as translated into Czech by František Vrba: a linguistic analysis

Slabyhoudová, Zuzana January 2014 (has links)
The diploma thesis offers a philological analysis of František Vrba's translation into Czech of The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer. The paper is composed of three major parts: "Theoretical background", "Hypothesis and Method", and "Analysis". The analysis addresses matters of lexical, syntactic, stylistic, metrical and cultural nature. The analysis focuses on The Knight's Tale, The Miller's Tale, The Nun's Priest's Tale and The Wife of Bath's Tale as convenient manifestations of stylistic variation, cross-generic links and structural correspondences and contrasts in The Canterbury Tales. The aim of this thesis is to analyze and evaluate the quality of František Vrba's Czech translation.

Abstract: This research has broader objective to elaborate a propose of format of toponymic encyclopedic dictionary and for that we use as corpus the repertoire of the lexical units that designate the names of the geographical features related to water, i.e. hydronym. The hydronyms that are part of our research refer to elements hydrographic stream, bay, marsh, head, cape, waterfall, canal, cataracts, corixão, corixo, stream, estuary, lake, pond, spring, dam, creek, river, stream river, little river, jump, sanga, ebb back. These hydronyms were obtained at database toponymic of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul project - ATEMS. To achieve the main objective of our research we reflect on the status of the map as text source toponymic research and how in it is recorded the toponymic syntagma; we analyze some Brazilian toponymic dictionaries already published to understand how they work and what the goals of a work like this; we organize a conceptual system of hydronym of Mato Grosso do Sul based on theoretical support of Terminology considering the hierarchical and non-hierarchical relationships between the lexical units that are part of our corpus; we propose three microstructure models of headwords: two main, one for headwords whose entries describe concepts related to hydrographic elements and key concepts of terminology and another set for the establishment of the headword that have as inputs the toponymic syntagmas, and a third remitting; we organize a system of reference foreseeing the presence of the variant toponymic syntagmas and indicating to person who is consulting the dictionary which headword he/she should look for to find the information who wants. Finally, we organize a sampling of entries as demonstration of what it could come to be the dictionary. We develop these actions to reach the main goal of presenting a proposal of model of dictionary to toponymic syntagmas, as regards the superstructure, the macrostructure and microstructure ... / Doutor

Ueda, Michele Cristina Barquete January 2014 (has links)
This paper aims to analyze the ethos of self-help books targeting the third age, considering grammar and lexical items contained in the text. The considerations with regard to ethos described and followed in this research belong to the French Discourse Analysis, with special emphasis on Dominique Maingueneau's reflections in this regard. According to him, ethos is about the image projected by the subject of enunciation considering the way they enunciate. The corpus of the research is composed of three self-help books for the third age that were originally written in Portuguese. The ethos can be captured through many evidences contained in the text. Thus, in this study we chose to analyze the ethos mainly through modal elements found in the corpus. The analysis of modality was chosen as this category is related to enunciator's subjectivity expression regarding their enunciate. Therefore, modal elements are a privileged focus of linguistic-discursive investigation in order to analyze the ethos. The study of modality was carried out mainly based on Hengeveld's functional considerations (2004) about the theme. The choice of functional component to analyze data is justified because this line of research provides relevant information on the subject and considers, in its analyses, the discursive context with modal elements. The analysis of ethos also takes into account other aspects of the surface of self- help discourse for the third age, like the occurrences of verbs in the imperative and the employment that the lexical item "old" reveals about the authoritative tone that dominates this discourse. The analysis also shows that the self-help discourse for the elderly is less an optimistic speech that offers seniors formulas to achieve a happy old age and more authoritarian discourse that is designed to teach the society to help and understand the elder / Mestre

Construções [v1+ver] no português brasileiro contemporâneo sob perspectiva construcional /

Robuste, Taísa Barbosa. January 2018 (has links)
Abstract: This thesis is supported by general assumptions of functionalist-related theories of language (DIK, 1989, 1997, NUYTS, 2007, among others), especially the Functionalism of the American West Coast (TRAUGOTT, 2010, TRAUGOTT; DASHER, 2002; HOPPER; TRAUGOTT, 2003; GIVÓN, 1984, 1995; BYBEE, 2016; among others), and specific concepts related to cognitive theories, especially the one identified with the Construction Grammar (GOLDBERG, 1995, 2006; CROFT, 2001, 2007; LAKOFF, 1987), in a field that has been called Usage-Based Models of Language (BERLOW; KEMMER, 2000; BYBEE, 2016) or Cognitive-Functional Linguistics (NUYTS, 2007). More specifically, we rely on premises of the Construction Grammar, which holds as a fundamental principle that the basic form of a syntactic structure is the construction, conceived as a symbolic pairing of a complex grammatical structure and meaning (GOLDBERG, 1995, 2006, CROFT, 2007); we do so in order to analyze, from a synchronic approach, based on written and spoken language data from the contemporary Brazilian Portuguese, the constructions [v1+ver], being v1 replaceable by the verbs ir, querer, and, deixar. Our point of departures is the hypothesis that these constructions are the result of a constructionalization process that occurs through a series of micro-step changes. In order to prove this hypothesis, we map the compositionality, schematicity, and productivity properties of these constructions. This allows the accomplishment of the thesis'central objective: to explore the relation between constructional change, constructionalization, and (inter)subjectivization (TRAUGOTT; TROUSDALE, 2013, TRAUGOTT, DASHER, 2002; TRAUGOTT, 2010). We identify and analyze four uses of constructs [v1+ver], which are: i) Constructions of purposeful movement; ii) Tense and Aspect periphrastic constructions; iii) Modal epistemic constructions, and; iv) Discourse Marker ... / Doutor
