Propõe-se, também, analisar a utilização de uma estética diferente da do Romantismo Brasileiro na obra As vítimas Algozes, quadros da escravidão de 1869.

This study − which focuses on the analysis, reading and critical reception of a work − is based on the theory of the aesthetics of reception. Hans Robert Jauss ‘ theoretical work analyzes the reception of the book Memórias de um Sargento de Milícias through the history of literature, the horizon of expectations and aesthetic distance. The studies of Wolfgang Iser focuses on the interaction between the text and the reader, what provides the foundations for the analysis of indeterminations and gaps that allowed the transformation of the narrative into a aesthetic object. As it was said earlier, the objective that guides this study is to analyze the transformation of the novel, from “stranded” to one of the most successful Brazilian books. To achieve this objective, this work is divided into five chapters which focuses on the production, reading and reception of the work. Thus, the aim is to demonstrate the reasons why the novel that took shy responsiveness throughout the 19th century became so prestigious in the 20th century. / A questão que permeia este trabalho é: “Por que uma obra tão mal recebida na época de sua publicação pode tornar-se um modelo de sucesso algumas dezenas de anos mais tarde?”. Para realizar tal estudo − cujo foco é a análise, a leitura e a recepção crítica de uma obra − optou-se pela teoria denominada estética da recepção. Para a realização do estudo da recepção e da análise de Memórias de um sargento de milícias, do trabalho teórico de Hans Robert Jauss, o introdutor da mencionada linha, aproveitou-se, principalmente, o que diz respeito à história da literatura, ao horizonte de expectativas e à distância estética. Os estudos de Wolfgang Iser, centrados na interação entre o texto e o leitor, fornecem os fundamentos para a análise das indeterminações e lacunas que permitiram a transformação da narrativa em objeto estético. Como já se disse anteriormente, a questão que norteia este estudo é a transformação do romance, antes “encalhado”, em uma das obras brasileiras com maior sucesso de público. Para atingir esse objetivo, o trabalho está dividido em cinco capítulos que dão conta da produção, da leitura e da recepção da obra. Desse modo, visa-se demonstrar os motivos pelos quais o romance obteve tímida receptividade ao longo do século XIX e foi tão prestigiado no século XX.

O Cortiço is a panel that comes out several representative types of the time. The book recounts the everyday, of an inn house in Botafogo. The residents of her neighbor, and a rich collection of blatant emotional realities experienced by the characters. Family relationships and their consequences guide the subject matter hereof. They are drawn to the various forms of interaction between the characters in the novel, including those involving adultery and prostitution. Through an analysis of the behavior of the characters, the research aims at the thesis of social and genetic determinism advocated by the author. Using the investigative method of interpretation, the study came from literary text to the analysis of the subject, the verbal context obtained by Aluísio Azevedo, and the advantage of the theoretical texts related to sociology and history. / O presente trabalho ressalta as valiosas contribuições do romance O Cortiço, de Aluísio Azevedo para a compreensão do contexto social fluminense de final de século XIX. O Cortiço é um painel em que se vislumbram vários tipos representativos da época. A obra narra o cotidiano, em Botafogo, dos habitantes de uma estalagem e de um sobrado a ela vizinho, sendo um rico apanhado de flagrantes das realidades afetivas experimentadas pelos personagens. As relações familiares e suas conseqüências tematizam o assunto aqui tratado. São postas em evidência as diversas formas de interação entre os personagens do romance, inclusive as que envolvem o adultério e a prostituição. Através de uma análise do comportamento dos personagens, a pesquisa busca comprovar as teses do determinismo social e genético defendidas pelo autor. Utilizando o método investigativo hermenêutico, o estudo partiu do texto literário para a análise do tema proposto, analisando a concretização verbal obtida por Aluísio Azevedo, nesse particular, e valendo-se ainda do aporte teórico de textos ligados à Sociologia e à História.
