Deutsche Geschichte in deutsche Geschichten der neunziger Jahre

Garbe, Joachim Erich Ewald 17 August 2012 (has links)
D.Litt. et Phil. / The demolition of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the unification of the two Germanies less than a year later led to a search for a new national identity - a process in which German history was reconsidered. This initiated a number of debates about how the German past, especially the atrocities that had been committed during the fascist era, should be remembered. There was a strong tendency to downplay guilt and to consider this chapter of German history closed. Eventually, however, the opposite tendency gained prominence in public discourse. Particularly around 1995, the fiftieth anniversary of the end of World War II, and in subsequent years German society appears to be more interested in history than before. This thesis examines the role that novels and short stories, which were published in Germany during the nineties, played in the process of re-evaluating the German past. Taking into account that the telling of stories is a crucial element of remembrance, authors of fictional works that deal with the past, in whatever way, contribute to the collective memory of a nation. The seven chapters of this thesis examine different aspects of redefining the past. Attacks on authors like Christa Wolf and Giinter Grass and other intellectuals, especially by the conservative media, demonstrated that traditional perspectives were reconsidered. The ensuing debate, and how authors responded in their works, is examined in the first two chapters. The third chapter traces the effects that unification had particularly for those who had lived in the GDR and who were now struggling to reposition themselves in the historic process. The novels analysed reveal that unification affected West Germans to a much lesser extent. The following three chapters deal with the huge impact that a guilt-ridden past had and still has on the lives of Germans. A number of novels show that family life was severely affected by the historical burden which older generations were carrying, and that the silence which surrounded this burden was an irritating factor for younger generations. Authors of all ages try to come to terms with this issue in various ways, especially in autobiographical works. One dominant insight arises from most of the texts: the German language is often regarded as contaminated, and German daily life - in both the GDR and the FRG - was strongly influenced by the lack of communication between the generations. In this context those works that deal with the relationship between Jews and others are of particular interest. The final chapter discusses works published in 1997 and 1998

Krueger, Gustav Adolf Ludwig Werner January 1971 (has links)
A commentary on the eleventh book of the Punica of Silius Italicus

Matier, K O (Kenneth Ogilvie) January 1980 (has links)
Preface: The scope of the commentary is limited. I have been concerned with establishing the diction of Silius in Book 11. I have shown which words are confined to epic, which words are poetic and which words are prosaic. I have not attempted to establish whether there is a correlation between Silius' use of 'poetic' and' prosaic' words and the content of what he is saying. But I have noticed that Silius frequently uses prosaic words when he is following Livy or some other historical source. In other cases, Silius may be using prosaic words because of his own training as an orator. He is clearly indebted to Cicero. Nor have I attempted to establish whether there is any particular effect when Silius uses a'poetic' or 'prosaic' word or phrase or construction. I have been influenced by considerations of length and also by the fact that I believe any such attempted interpretation, although it might produce valuable results, would of necessity be much more subjective than what I have actually done. I leave any such interpretation to future researchers of Silius.

Re-imagining love and intimacy in the poetry of Gabeba Baderoon, Ingrid De Kok, and Makhosazana Xaba

Du Preez, Jenny Bozena January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation explores the ways in which the poetry of Gabeba Baderoon, Ingrid de Kok and Makhosazana Xaba challenge the sexist discourses that allow for the exploitation of women‘s bodies. It will also examine how they re-imagine the script 1 of heterosexual romantic love which places women in a submissive position and closes down possibilities for human connections which do not fit within the narrow strictures of this notion of love. The poems selected come from Baderoon‘s two collections, The Dream in the Next Body (2005) and A Hundred Silences (2006), an anthology of Ingrid de Kok‘s poetry spanning all her previous collections entitled Seasonal Fires: New and Selected Poems (2006), and Makhosazana‘s Xaba‘s first poetry collection, These Hands (2005). All three of these contemporary, South African, woman poets present critiques of the sexual exploitation of women and offer explorations of romantic love, relationships and sexual intimacy alternative to contemporary, patriarchal heteronormativity. This analysis will take cognizance of the influence of apartheid and colonial history on the formation of gender politics. It will also examine the representation of women as sexual objects and the spectacularized and graphic depictions of sex and how these poets can be seen to re-present women and re-script sex. Whilst Baderoon and De Kok are concerned with re-imagining heterosexual romantic love and sexual intimacy, their rethinking of love can also be read as useful in engaging with 'queer'2 sexuality and romantic love outside of the heterosexual norm along with Xaba, who is concerned with lesbian desire. Finally, all three poets experiment with traditional poetic form and techniques and it is through this experimentation with poetic language, and the employment of what Julia Kristeva calls the semiotic, that these poets are able to re-imagine love and intimacy. Thus they might be said, to use Kristeva‘s phrase, to stage a 'revolution in poetic language'.
