Trata-se das obras de Villiers de l'Isle-Adam (1838-1889) e de Mary Shelley (1797-1851), representadas pelos romances L'Ève future e Frankenstein, respectivamente. Para tanto, e em primeiro lugar, traçamos um histórico do desejo humano de criar uma criatura artificial perfeita desde a Antiguidade até os dias atuais. Em seguida, passamos à análise das referidas obras, caracterizando e comparando os criadores e suas respectivas criaturas, concluindo, ao final, o que ambas representam em termos metafóricos / Abstract: This dissertation aims to study two literary works whose characters are creators scientists and their artificial creatures. The following novels are studied: L'Ève future by Villiers de l'Isle-Adam (1838-1889) and Frankenstein by Mary Shelley (1797-1851). Tradicionalismo e modernidade no Brasil de Antonio Callado : uma leitura de Quarup /

Nossa hipótese é a de que a jornada de Nando em Quarup pode ser interpretada, de maneira alegórica, como o périplo de um Brasil que busca, na democracia, justiça social. Sendo assim, devemos estudar, nesta pesquisa, a intersecção entre literatura e história. Partindo dessas considerações, definimos o questionamento desta dissertação, a saber: de que modo o tradicionalismo e a modernização estão presentes na trajetória de Nando? Entendemos por tradicionalismo: infraestruturas que visam a dominação e a consequente submissão do povo, tais como a distribuição desigual de terras - gestada, em seus fundamentos, durante o Período Colonial; e por modernização: novos ideais que visam a desalienação e a consequente luta por melhorias sociais, tais como as que impulsionaram o surgimento das Ligas Camponesas - criadas, principalmente, no decorrer das décadas de cinquenta e sessenta do século XX. Enquanto o tradicionalismo está ligado ao continuísmo, a manutenção de um antigo status quo, a modernização indicia a ruptura, isto é, a quebra de um ciclo histórico de injustiças. A conclusão é a de que o percurso de Nando em Quarup representa o itinerário histórico de um Brasil que, nos anos sessenta do século XX, busca melhorias sociais / Abstract: This work intends to make a literary analysis of the novel Quarup by Antonio Callado, focusing on the trajectory of Nando, his protagonist, as a priest, indianist and educator. Our hypothesis is that Nando's journey in Quarup can be interpreted allegorically as the journey of a Brazil that seeks, in democracy, social justice. Thus, we must study, in this research, the intersection between literature and history. Based on these considerations, we define the questioning of this dissertation: in what way traditionalism and modernization are present in the trajectory of Nando? We mean by traditionalism: infrastructures that aim at domination and the consequent submission of the people, such as the unequal distribution of land - essentially created during the Colonial Period; and by modernization: new ideals that aim at the consequent struggle for social improvements, such as those that propelled the emergence of Ligas Camponesas - created mainly during the fifties and sixties of the twentieth century. While traditionalism is linked to continuity, the maintenance of an old status quo, modernization signals the rupture, that is, the breaking of a historical cycle of injustice. The conclusion is that Nando's path in Quarup represents the historical itinerary of a Brazil that, in the sixties of the twentieth century, seeks social improvements / Mestre

Na ponta sociológica, Maurice Halbwachs, por meio do que ele chama de "quadros sociais vivos do presente", irá construir a sua teoria da memória coletiva. Relacionando essa memória aos conceitos de memória individual, memória histórica, espaço e tempo, o sociólogo desconstruirá ou reconstruirá alguns conceitos fundamentais da filosofia idealista vigente em sua época. A criação literária, reconhecida pioneira na análise dos fatos humanos, estabelecer-se-á como um campo fértil nos estudos da memória. Entendendo a importância e a relevância do estudo e a ampliação de todos os conceitos em torno dessa temática, este trabalho analisa a representação da memória nas literaturas moderna e contemporânea, partindo da ideia de que, em uma representação de memória construída pelo eu, seja essa representação fictícia ou ficcionalizada, sempre há a presença da sociedade por meio de quadros sociais. Como respaldo teórico, valemo-nos da teoria da memória coletiva e outros escritos relativos à memória que complementam o ponto-de-vista adotado. Para tanto, trabalhamos com as narrativas: Memórias de Lázaro (1952), do baiano Adonias Filho; The House on Mango Street (1984), da norte-americana de origem familiar e cultural mexicana, Sandra Cisneros; e No Fio da Vida: uma Odisséia Açor-Americana (Autobiografia) (2013), do açoriano e professor residente dos Estados Unidos, Francisco Cota Fagundes. Identificando e analisando os quadros de representação da memória dessas narrativas e articulando estes aos elementos da arte da ficção assinalados e trabalhados por Umberto Eco e por James Wood / Abstract: The memory's theories that form the current scenario about the memory theme are composed by concepts in which areas of thinking are studied from the following extreme points: from platonic idealism to sociology based on social frameworks. Taking into account the sociology viewpoint, Maurice Halbwachs will be the basis of sociological studies due to his theory of collective memory through something that he named of 'social alive pictures from present'. Linking this kind of memory with concepts of individual memory, historical memory, space and time, the French sociologist is designated 'to destroy and rebuild' some fundamental concepts of current idealistic philosophy of his time. The literary creation (a kind of recognized pioneer in analyzing human facts) will be established itself as a good space of memory's study and the Marcel Proust's work will be one of the 'addresses' more visited by researchers of a variety of areas. Thus, considering the importance and the relevance of the study and the increase of all concepts around this subject, this project aims to analyze the representation of memory in modern and contemporary literature, defending the hypothesis that in a representation of memory built by an 'I', we will always find the presence of society through social frameworks. As theoretical base, this project will have the collective memory theory and other works related to the memory that will complement the point of view taken. In order to do this, we identified and analized the memory's representation framework of some narratives: Memórias de Lázaro (1952), written by Adonias Filho; The House on Mango Street (1984), written by Sandra Ciseros, an American but also Mexican descendent; and No Fio da Vida: uma Odisséia Açor - Americana (Autobiografia) (2013), written by Francisco Cota Fagundes, an Azorean and university professor who lives in USA. Games, movies, television, and interactive media make use of World-Building. World-Building essentially creates an elaborate invented universe in order to give a story context. In other words it generates a back-story designed to enhance the cathartic experience and promote engagement by the reader, viewer or participant. Some examples of World-Building include Halo, World of WarCraft and Game of Thrones. Stories need context to be fully understood and experienced. One describes a situation, the environment, sensations, smells, sounds and sensory perception to give the audience a fuller, richer experience. World-Building provides context through history, textures, laws, physics and motivations. The written portion of this thesis describes the process of generating a fantasy world. 香港的殖民處境特殊, 既沒有在殖民管治結束後獨立, 也沒有在殖民管治時期中止與中國的各種聯繫, 致「香港文學」主體性的意涵常在「本土文學」與「地區文學」之間徘徊, 衍生出不同的「本土性」及文學史意義。現存「香港文學」的不同主體性論述, 主要以「1950年代」為「香港文學」的起點, 各自呈現不同的「本土性」。本文關注「香港文學」在「本土性」研究中的價值,冀透過整理現存的各種「1950年代香港文學」論述,剖析「香港文學」的主體性論述與國族想像、殖民政策、文學生產的關係,思考以「本土性」建構「香港文學」的可能。 / 本文共有六章, 第一章「緒論」闡述研究動機、目的、研究方法,並回顧現存文獻的研究成果。第二章「『香港文學』的『中國新文學』」整理現存各種「1950年代香港文學」論述,歸納「香港文學」主體性論述的不同形態。第三章「殖民者的身影」探討1950年代的香港殖民政策,並以《新生晚報》為例,分析殖民者在1950年代香港文學生產中的角色。第四章「『通俗』的資本」運用「資本」的概念, 比較不同「1950年代香港文學」論述對通俗文學場域位置的不同見解,以考察通俗文學在論述中呈現的「本土」視野。第五章「通俗文學在『香港文學』」以香港作家舒巷城的作品, 在不同「1950年代香港文學」文選的編選情況為例,討論「象徵資本」與香港文學「本土性」的關係。第六章「結論」總結「1950年代香港文學」論述的研究價值,並展望香港文學主體性論述的其他研究方向。 / As one of the former colonial areas, Hong Kong has a more complex colonial experience. The demise of British colonial rule in 1997 did not gain independence for Hong Kong, and noticeably, Hong Kong remained in close contact with Mainland China throughout the colonial period. The debate of the subjectivity of "Hong Kong literature" oscillates between the framing of local literature and regional literature, and generates various understandings of locality and literary history. Despite discrepancy, "1950s" is commonly regarded as the critical period of Hong Kong literature’s emergence and various understandings of localism are hence generated. This dissertation aims at investigating localism from the perspective of "Hong Kong literature". Through analyzing different discourses of the notion of "1950s Hong Kong literature", this thesis scrutinizes the interplay of national imagination, colonial policies and cultural production, and tries to examine the possibilities of constructing "Hong Kong literature" with localism. / There are six chapters in this thesis. Chapter 1 addresses the motivation, purpose of research, methodology, as well as the literature review of the existing studies. Chapter 2 analyzes prevailing discourses on the notion of "1950s Hong Kong literature", so as to investigate different discursive formations of the subjectivity of Hong Kong literature. Chapter 3, with the examples in the Hsin Sheng Wen Pao(新生晚報), examines the colonial policies and its role in literary production regarding the notion of "1950s Hong Kong literature". Chapter 4 departs from the idea of capital, examines debates over the position of popular culture in the literary field. The dialogue is carried out through the different understandings on the notion of "1950s Hong Kong literature". Chapter 5 studies the relationship between symbolic capital and localism with the example of how a Hong Kong writer, Shu Xiangcheng(舒巷城), was perceived in the compilation "1950s Hong Kong literature". The emotional rhetoric of the later Crusades : romance in England after 1291

This thesis offers an assessment of late medieval public response to the crusades through an investigation of emotional rhetoric in the Middle English crusading romances. It argues that the prevailing climate after the fall of Acre in 1291 and the evacuation of the last Christian strongholds in the Levant was characterized by a mixture of enduring enthusiasm and fascination, but also of concern, anxiety, and self-questioning, engendered by the enterprise's failures. The loss of the Holy Land had enduring repercussions on Christian crusading mindsets, marking a culminating point in Islam's seemingly relentless victories in wars believed to be ordained by God, and the collapse of Christendom's ambitions to secure lasting dominion over Christ's patrimony.
