Detta uppsatsarbete ställer frågan om temat för en berättelse förändras när den byter form och när berättelsens intrig byter plats. För att ta reda på hur det förhåller sig har ett experiment genomförts där en text, hämtad ur Lotta Olssons sonettkrans Den mörka stigen, transformerats från bunden vers till löpande text. Utifrån sonettkransens har en parallell text skrivits, en modern novell. Dessa texter har samma skiftningar i känslouttrycket och i många fall likartade formuleringar. Den moderna novellen presenteras i resultatdelen under rubriken Älskar, älskar inte. Ett utdrag av Lotta Olssons sonettkrans presenteras i bilaga 1.De båda texterna analyseras i analysdelen utifrån fyra perspektiv, plats, intrig, berättare och tema. Analysen ger vid handen i just denna jämförelse att även om platsen och intrigen skiljer sig åt väsentligt samt att berättaren i de olika texterna ter sig olika, förblir temat detsamma.I diskussionen framträder den Orfiska myten med sina symboler om förlust, sorg och längtan. Temat: Den omöjliga kärleken, utmynnar i en filosofisk betraktelse om sorgen som drivkraft för kreativiteten, måhända högre värderad än kärlekens sötma.

Despite being one of the most influential writers of his era, Edgar Allan Poe led a mostly tragic life of impoverishment and personal failures and tragedies. This essay explores to what extent this affected Poe’s writing, by examining the portrayals of the emotions of grief and sorrow in some of Poe’s work, via close-reading. Further, the essay contains a shorter biographical analysis of Poe’s life and work, in order to establish a connection between the two. The meaning of the emotions of grief and sorrow within Poe’s works are discussed, and connected to Poe’s biography. The results show that Poe’s works are sometimes converging with tragedies from his own life, his personal tragedies and his stories featuring death, grief and sorrow converge on several occasions throughout his intense career.

<p>This thesis examines one of the most fraught and distorted relationships—the association between the United States and Iran. Contemporarily, most scholars and professionals associated with this connection evaluate the relationship in terms of politics, religion, power, and national security. Far fewer, however, evaluate it from its roots—the cultures, relationships, and dependencies that ultimately produced the prickly relationship of these two countries today. This thesis utilizes American authored travel narratives from 1921- 1941, written primarily by recreational travelers, to contradict American contemporary and paternalistic views of the relationship with Iran. This thesis posits that a nascent and unsure America depended on a pre-modern Iran to ease her into an impending modern existence.</p>
