Nesse recorte temporal, a Livraria Universal foi um centro difusor de uma prática sociocultural moderna – a leitura – um legítimo espaço de requinte e bom gosto, tanto no que se refere as suas estruturas físicas, quanto aos materiais que disponibilizava. A partir de contribuições de Hallewell e Machado, os quais apresentam discussões sobre os impressos e seus meios de circulação; também abordamos conceitos e teorias de historiadores da leitura, como Darnton, em relação ao circuito das comunicações e Chartier sobre as representações, dentre os diversos modos de leituras nos diferentes tempos e espaços. Dentro das premissas da Nova História Cultural, a pesquisa documental e bibliográfica, teve como corpus de análises, livros e jornais do final do século XIX e início do século XX, revistas e almanaques produzidos e vendidos pela Universal. A fim de verificarmos quais impressos eram vendidos na Universal, a partir dos diversos anúncios de livros divulgados na Revista Illustração Pelotense, criamos três categorias, dentro das quais enquadramos o maior número possível de obras. Essas categorias se dividiram em: Obras Regionais, Obras de Instrução e Obras Francesas. A investigação desses materiais permitiram concluirmos que a Livraria Universal, além de um espaço de requinte e bom gosto, tanto no que se referia à suas estruturas físicas quanto aos materiais que disponibilizava, foi um importante centro difusor de leitura, pois atendia a população, com um amplo sortimento de livros - dentre outros impressos- e objetos. / This dissertation is the result of a study aimed at identifying the role played by the Universal Bookstore concerning the sale and distribution of books in Pelotas from 1887 to 1934, period when it developed its activities in this city. In that time frame, the Universal Bookstore was a diffuser center of a modern sociocultural practice - the reading - a legitimate area of refinement and good taste, both as regards their physical structures and also provided about the materials. It was also discussed concepts and theories of historians of reading, as Darnton, in relation to the communications circuit and Chartier on the representations, among the various modes of readings at different the time and space. Within the premises of the New Cultural Historythe documentary and bibliographical research had as corpus of analyzes, books and newspapers from the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century, magazines and almanacs produced and sold by Universal. In order to verify which printed were sold at Universal, from the various notices of books published in the Magazine Illustrating Pelotense, we created three categories within which we fit the largest possible number of works. These categories were divided into: Regional Works, Works of Instruction and French Works. The investigation of these materials allowed concluding that the Universal Library, besides a space of refinement and good taste, both in referring to their physical structures and to the materials which were provided, was an important diffuser center of reading, since it served the population , with a wide assortment of books - among others printings- and objects.
