La gouvernementalité aux marges de l’État : la lutte contre le paludisme en Casamance (sénégal) / The governmentality at the State's margins : malaria fighting in Casamance (Senegal)

Leveque, Cedric 04 December 2015 (has links)
This thesis consists in a Senegalese State analysis in its works and its governmentality process deployed in Casamance. Through the combat against malaria as an ethnographic field of investigation, this work analyses the fabrication of the State legitimacy in a region where it is challenged. It's about the investigation into the relations between the political apparatus (ideological and coercive), the government collaborators and communities through the State works. The structural adjustment of the 80's which has led to the decentralization and the community apparatus setting up, contributed to deteriorate the State's image for the people. A crisis of the legitimacy of the State rooted in a social conflict, exacerbated this deterioration in a Casamance context. This conflict appeared because the people felt that the State was a looter and was unable to provide for their well-being. Today, the imaginary of a State which has "given up" the region still goes on when Casamance still knows a weakened conflict. Consequently, how does the State build its legitimacy when it mainly reveals itself to the Casamances through its violent prerogatives? How does it appear by its benevolent forms allowing to legitimate its presence when its coercive apparatus are so obvious (military control and legitimate police)? Thus, this thesis questions, through an analysis of the deployment of the bio-powerand through the setting up of the policies to combat malaria, the fabrication of the State in Casamance. This research constitutes in this way a political anthropology.

Lindberg, Felicia, Fex Rytterborg, Julia January 2019 (has links)
Purpose and aims: The aim is to study if different exercise-intensities affects perceived stress in Swedish women. This study will answer the following questions: <ol type="1">Is there a difference in perceived stress in women who participate in low-intensity exercise in the form of walking compared to women who participate in high-intensity exercise in the form of running? Is there a difference in perceived stress in women who participate in high-intensity exercise in the form of running compared to women who do not exercise at all? Is there a difference in perceived stress in women who participate in low-intensity exercise in the form walking compared to women who do not exercise at all?           Method: The study is a cross-sectional study, through questionnaires, differences in perceived stress have been compared in women with a mean age of 39,03 years (± 14,44), who either exercised with high intensity or with low intensity. The results have been compared to a reference group consisting of non-training women. Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS10) together with ten intensity-questions for inclusion in the study was sent out via social media, Facebook. Results: A significant difference was detected in the comparison of the high intensity group and the reference group, (p=0.001), score difference in PSS10; 7,67 points. No significant difference between the high-intensity group and the low-intensity group (p=0.737), the same applied to the low-intensity group and the reference group (p=0,081). Conclusions: Women who participated in high intensity exercise had reduced percieved stress compared to women who did not exercise at all. No difference in percieved stress was observed between women who participated in low intensity exercise and women who participated in high intensity exercise. Similarly, no difference in percieved stress in women who participated in low intensity exercise and women who did not exercise at all.

Fighting for Aid : Foreign Funding and Civil Conflict Intensity

Strandow, Daniel January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation focuses on the sub-national impact of foreign aid on civil conflicts by asking the question: How does foreign aid committed to contested areas affect the intensity of violence in those areas? The main theoretical contribution is to focus on how aid influences warring parties’ decisions to engage in contests over territorial control and how that in turn influences violence intensity. The study introduces two concepts: funding concentration and barriers to exploiting aid. A contested area has greater concentration of funding if warring parties expect a high value of aid to be distributed to only a few locations. Funding is instead diffused if the parties expect aid to be spread over many locations. A low barrier to exploiting aid is present if it is of a type that both state and non-state actors could potentially misuse. There is a high barrier if territorial control is required in order to exploit funding channels. The theory introduces three testable implications: First, greater funding concentration encourages conventional contests over territorial control, which increases military fatalities. The second proposal is that if there is a low barrier to exploiting aid (e.g. humanitarian and food aid) then there will be increased competition between warring parties and civilians, and hence more civilian fatalities. Third, high barrier funding (e.g. education aid) will motivate contests over territorial control and increase military fatalities. This dissertation uses geo-coded aid commitments data and introduces data of warring parties’ battleground control in sub-Saharan Africa, 1989–2008. The research design relies on propensity score matching where pairs of observations are matched based on a range of covariates. The results concerning barriers to exploitation are partially supported. High barrier aid increases military fatalities whereas low barrier aid has little impact on violence. Greater funding concentration increases military fatalities substantially compared to if there is low or no funding concentration. In line with theory, greater funding concentration does not increase civilian fatalities.

Ultrassom pulsado de baixa intensidade na cicatrização de úlcera venosa crônica: estudo comparativo de duas técnicas de aplicação / Low-intensity pulsed ultrasound on chronic venous ulcer healing: comparison of two application techniques

Ana Elisa Serafim Jorge 03 September 2009 (has links)
Venous ulcers represent a major health problem in the world and high costs associated with long-term treatment. Ultrasonic therapy has been applied for decades to enhance the process of chronics wound healing. Many authors have assessed the effects of LIPUS on venous ulcers, but there were no data about the different application techniques. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of two application techniques (edge and bed) of LIPUS, comparing with the conventional therapy (1% silver sulfadiazine cream) on the chronic venous ulcers healing. Therefore, twenty four patients with venous ulcers were evaluated at the Ulcers Outpatient of Dermatology at the Teaching Health Center, Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto - University of São Paulo (FMRP-USP) and randomly allocated, as follows: Edge Group (mean age 62.9 years, 37.5% women, 62.5% white) with nine ulcers (13,49 \'+ OR -\' 14,41 \'CM POT.2\') treated with LIPUS (1.5 MHz, 30 mW/\'CM POT.2\') at the edge, Bed Group (mean age 72.6 years, 100% women, 87.5% white) with eight ulcers (15.61 \'+ OR -\' 13.36 \'CM POT.2\') treated with the same LIPUS at the bed and Sulfadiazine Group (mean age 75.7 years, 20% women, 40% white) with seven ulcers (24,06 \'+ OR -\' 30,10 \'CM POT.2\') treated daily with 1% silver sulfadiazine cream. During treatment, they were photographed every fifteen days and analyzed with the software ImageJ to obtain the ulcerated area, Wound Healing Index (WHI) and Sphacel and Granulation Ratio (SGR) from all ulcers. At the Bed Group, it was performed a histopathological analysis (fibroblasts, inflammatory cells, blood vessels, and collagen counting) from biopsies collected at the 1st and the 45th treatment day. Data were analyzed by the (mixed effects and Poisson tests) for comparison among groups, with the level of significance set at 95% (p < 0.05). Thus, considering the slight differences found in ICU and REG of irradiated groups and GL histopathological changes, it is evident better effects in chronic venous ulcers with LIPUS treatment than conventional therapy with silver sulfadiazine 1%, independently of application site.

Poverty and Conflict: A Self-Perpetuating Cycle in the Somali Regional State (Region 5), Ethiopia: 1960-2010

Teshome, Bisrat 01 January 2011 (has links)
Region 5 is one of the most impoverished and insecure regions of Ethiopia. For decades, the region has suffered from a multitude of armed conflicts involving state and non-state actors. Region 5 is also one of the most underserved states of Ethiopia with some of the lowest levels of human development indicators nationwide. Although the adversities of poverty and conflict are widely acknowledged in their own respect, there has been little or no inquest into why poverty and conflict have prevailed under the same space for decades. Poverty and conflict have often been seen as separate phenomena that are dealt with using different sets of theories and practices in the real world. Nonetheless, a closer look at poverty and conflict in Region 5 reveals that both are strongly connected to each other. The poverty-conflict trap has been an on-going cycle in the region for the last five decades. The main intent of this research paper is analyzing the two-way relationship between poverty and conflict in Region 5. By studying this relationship, this analysis seeks to contribute to a new framework that brings peacebuilding and development closer.

A peace missions in relation to the new guidelines for U.S.-Japan defense cooperation: MOOTW aspect

Unknown Date (has links)
(Military Operations Other Than War, MOOTW)的實務操作面向去分析「美日防衛合作新指針」中「雙方平時合作事項」,運用理論與實踐去檢證美日軍事合作對國際社會的貢獻與對台海的適用性。 關鍵詞:非作戰軍事行動 美日防衛合作新指針 低強度衝突 美日關係 / The main purpose of this thesis is looking forward to analyzing the mutual cooperation in the peace period in the " The New U.S.-Japan Defense Cooperation Guidelines " by the military principle- the real operation level of Military Operations Other than War (MOOTW). We use this theory and practice to verify the contribution of the military cooperation of between America and Japan for international society and the adaptability using in Taiwan Strait. Since the Japan will be a more active role and take part in more mission for the security and peace of Asia and Pacific area in the future. To those peoples who had suffer the oppression by Japan in Asian areas, if they can not keep an objective, rational and impartial position to observe this event,it will be hard to erase the shadow of militarism causing by Japan in the World War II.The result of this prejudice will only obstruct the progress of Asian area forward to the development of Internationalize in the 21st century.Concretely speaking, this thesis posses a foreside in the theory discussion, and belong to the conceptualize style of the leading edge theory(military principle). Specifically speaking to the Asia and Pacific areas, it do not result the same conflict of each military ally as did between NATO and the Warsaw Treaty Organization. The former Soviet Union took part in one of the powerful countries, which influence the security of the Asian and Pacific areas. After cold war, the international structure enters to a new interchange period. The entire environment confronting between western and eastern polarities had disappeared. Asia-Pacific area lost a dependable balance lever due to lacking an effective multilateral security mechanism. Therefore, Asia- Pacific area gradually becomes a "dynamic balance" structure. The U.S. is the only one super power in the world in 21st century. The Asia-Pacific area security strategy of the U.S.,especially in northeast Asia, is the focus to other countries. For other democratic countries, the U.S.-Japan defense alliance is the axis about which the Asia-Pacific security policy of the US rotates. The U.S.-Japan Defense Cooperation Guidelines has become one of important structures of interactions between both sides.Although the U.S.-Japan Defense Cooperation Guidelines is focus on military security, furthermore, it becomes a construction pillar in economy, politics, culture and relevant developing issues on both sides. Especially, after the former Soviet Union broke down, it is almost impossible to have a nuclear war took place in the future, instated, the regional ethnic conflicts, international terrorism, narcotics dealing and smuggling and piratical activities take place very often, those bring huge threat to our peace and security. Pragmatically thinking about this, how to figure out those international issues can be the biggest contribution in terms of international peace. Based on our research,we propose the following suggestions: 1. To establish the R.O.C."Peacetime Military Operation Guidelines" for providing the Ministry of National Defense a guideline on dealing with the domestic disasters, deterring terrorism, and perusing international cooperative operations. We found that the US doctrines can provide a hands on reference: (1) The US Joint Operation Doctrine (Joint pub 3-0) can be referenced to establish the ROC joint operation doctrines. (2) The US Military Operation Other than War Joint Operation Doctrine (Joint pub 3-7) can also be referenced to establish ROC Other than War joint operation doctrines. (3) The US Military Operation Other than War Joint Operation Doctrines, for examples; US Army Operation Doctrine (FM 100-5),US Navy Operation Doctrine (NDP I: Naval Warfare), and US Air Force Other Than War Operation Doctrine (AFDD 2-3), can be referenced to establish ROC Services' Other Than War Joint Operation Doctrines. 2. To participate Asia-Pacific area rescue operations The international and nation's general public do not support the conduction of war. In contrary, the general publics always give highly respects to the organization join the international rescue operations. In facts, the procedure on conducting the war is similar to join the international rescue operation. Furthermore, the operation furnishes our troops a training event. For example, the Russia joined the rescue operation on Minske event. While the new generation submarine program is underway, we should take action and participate the area rescues, and join the international association work organized by US,Japan, Korea, Australia, and Singapore. Efeitos da fototerapia com laser em baixa intensidade e dos fatores de crescimento PDGF e BMP-2, isolados ou em associação, na diferenciação ósseo/odontogênica de células-tronco de polpa dentária humana / Effects of low intensity laser therapy and growth factors PDGF and BMP-2 on the odontogenic differentiation of dental pulp stem cells

Ferreira, Leila Soares 15 September 2011 (has links)
Laser phototherapy (LPT) is able to increase cellular metabolism, which in turn could influence the odontogenic differentiation of dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs). PDGF and BMP-2 are growth factors involved in dentinogenesis and tissue repair. PDGF plays a role in embryonic development, cell proliferation, cell migration, and angiogenesis, whereas BMP-2 is strongly associated with cell differentiation in mineralized tissues such as bone and dentin. The aim of this study was to analyze the effects of LPT and the growth factors PDGF-BB and BMP-2 combined or not on the odontogenic differentiation of hDPSCs. These cells were grown in regular medium (G1) and irradiated (G2), mineralizing medium (G3) and irradiated (G4), mineralizing medium containing PDGF-BB (G5) and irradiated (G6), mineralizing medium containing BMP-2 (G7) and irradiated (G8). For irradiated groups, LPT was performed in punctual and contact mode with a semiconductor diode laser, with a beam spot area of 0.028 cm2 and wavelength of 660nm (InGaAlP-visible red), using the following parameters: power of 20mW, energy density of 5J/cm2 and irradiation time of 7 seconds per point (0,14 J per point). Differentiation was assessed by the following analysis: expression of genes related to odontogenic differentiation (DSPP, DMP-1 and OCN) using quantitative real time PCR (qRT-PCR); alkaline phosphatase activity and calcium deposition using alizarin red staining in 3, 7 and 14 days. Data were compared by ANOVA and Tukey´s test (p<0.05). The cultures treated with mineralizing medium containing BMP-2 and irradiated (G8) showed the highest rate of odontogenic differentiation. The expressions of DSPP, DMP-1 and OCN genes, at least in 14 days, were significantly higher in G8 compared to all other groups, except for the groups G3 and G7. These groups showed similar expressions of DSPP and OCN than G8 in 14 days. G8 showed the highest ALP activity in 3 days and the lowest in 14 days compared to all other groups. The largest amount of calcium deposits was observed in G8 in 14 days. The most striking feature on induction of odontogenic differentiation of hDPSCs was observed when LPT was applied in association with BMP-2. Therefore, the use of a combined LPT and BMP-2 therapy could be of relevance for the re-establishment of pulp physiology when applied in cases of dental pulp exposure by promoting the differentiation of hDPSCs.

An investigation of seasonal disturbance intensity on wetland grass belts of Nysvley Nature Reserve

Gelebe, Vhuhwavho 17 May 2019 (has links)
MSc (Botany) / Department of Botany / The use of disturbance in the management of Savanna is a common rangeland practice in South Africa. A two-season trial was established in June 2016 and December 2016 to evaluate the effects of disturbance of different intensities on wetland belts in the Nylsvley Nature Reserve. The disturbances were in three different belts of different grass types at different intensities. The experimental treatments consisted of two different intensities, namely; high (H) and low (L). The Cyperus amabilis belt was regarded as site 1, the Sporobolus africanus as site 2, and the Themeda triandra as site 3. Seventeen kites were contracted in each belt, two times 1 m × 1 m at high and low intensity, followed by two times 2 m × 2 m one at high intensity. The results showed that disturbance affects the topsoil by removing the soil which is rich in nutrients producing pioneer species for the first few months and then original species were seen inhibiting again. / NRF
