Near Wall Investigation of Three Dimensional Turbulent Boundary LayersKuhl, David Derieg 22 August 2001 (has links)
This report documents the experimental study for four different three-dimensional turbulent flows. The investigation focuses on near wall measurements in these flows. Several experimental techniques are used in the studies; however, the bulk of the investigation focuses on a three-orthogonal-velocity-component fiber-optic laser Doppler anemometer (3D-LDA) system. The control volume of the 3D-LDA is on the order of 50 micro-meter in size, or a y<sup>+</sup> distance of around 2.3 units (using average values of U<sub>τ</sub> and ν from the experiment). An auxiliary small boundary layer wind tunnel (auxiliary tunnel) and a low speed linear compressor cascade wind tunnel (cascade tunnel) are utilized in this study. One of four flow experiments is done in the auxiliary tunnel the other three are in the cascade tunnel. The first three-dimensional turbulent flow is a vortical flow created by two half-delta wing vortex generators. Near wall secondary flow features are found. The second flow is an investigation of the first quarter chord tip gap flow in the cascade tunnel. Strong three-dimensional phenomena are found. The third flow investigated is the inflow to the compressor cascade with the moving wall. The experiment records shear layer interaction between the upstream flow and moving wall. Finally the fourth flow investigated is the inflow to the compressor cascade with the moving wall with half-delta wing vortex generators attached. Phase-averaged data reveal asymmetrical vortex structures just downstream of the vortex generators. This is the first time any near wall data has been taken on any of these flows. / Master of Science

The study of tactile illusions like visual illusions can reveal the brain's processing strategies. A famous tactile illusion is the cutaneous rabbit illusion. Fundamental to this illusion is the perceptual length contraction phenomenon: two taps that occur in rapid succession on the forearm are perceived as occurring closer together than they were physically placed. Our lab previously proposed a Bayesian probabilistic model that views perception as a compromise between expectation (prior experience) and sensation (likelihood of sensorineural data given hypothesized tap locations). The model proposes a low-speed prior, an expectation based on experience that objects tend to be stationary or to move slowly on the skin. When the sensation of space is unclear (e.g., taps are weak), the model predicts that expectation will strongly influence perception. Consistent with this prediction, our lab previously showed that the use of weaker taps causes more pronounced perceptual length contraction. Here we report psychophysical tests on 64 participants, which confirmed this finding. Our study also used stimulus sequences consisting of a weak and a strong tap, for which the Bayesian model predicts an asymmetric perceptual length contraction, such that the weaker tap location will be perceived to shift more than the stronger tap. The experimental results confirmed this prediction, providing further support for our Bayesian probabilistic model as an explanation for perceptual length contraction. However, our results revealed a discrepancy in the data at the smaller SOAs, which showed less length contraction than predicted. We hypothesized that participants might overestimate the smaller SOAs, an effect our lab defines as time dilation. Accordingly, in a second study we investigated the effects of varying SOA and lengths on perceived SOA. The model predicts more pronounced time dilation at smaller SOAs and larger lengths. Low speed wind tunnel testing and data correction methods for aircraft models in ground effectBroughton, Benjamin Albert 02 May 2013 (has links)
In this thesis, techniques for testing aircraft models in ground effect in a low speed wind tunnel are investigated. Although these types of tests have been done before, the current study is unique in that forces are measured with an overhead balance instead of an internal balance. This has the advantage that the types of models that are difficult to mount on a sting with an internal balance, can often be mounted with a strut protruding from the top of the model. Positioning a sting-mounted model close to the ground at a high angle-of-attack is also usually difficult if not impossible. Finally, drag measurements are often more accurate when measured with an overhead balance rather than with an internal sting-type balance. The disadvantages associated with this method of testing are identified and solutions suggested. These include accurate moment transfers and correcting for support tares and interference. The thesis also investigates general procedures associated with ground effect testing such as proper boundary corrections and the necessity of a rolling floor. A simplified preliminary test series was performed in order to identify shortcomings in the existing equipment and procedures. This series is explained in Chapter 2. Chapter 4 and 5 describe changes made to the existing equipment following this test series. These include a novel telescopic fairing to shroud the mounting strut and an internal pitching mechanism. The correction techniques and general theory are summarised in Chapter 3. The author concludes in Chapter 6 that with the application of the techniques described in this thesis, the test engineer should be able to obtain accurate and reliable data from most aircraft configurations. Additional suggestions for testing models in ground effect are also given in this chapter. Finally, a few shortcomings that still need to be investigated are mentioned at the end of Chapter 6. Hierdie veranderinge sluit 'n teleskopiese windskerm in om die monteerstang te isoleer van die wind, sowel as 'n interne heimeganisme om die invalshoek van die model te verstel. Die korreksieprosedures en algemene teorie word in Hoofstuk 3 opgesom. Die outeur se gevolgtekking in Hoofstuk 6 stel dat die toetsingenieur, met behulp van die gebruik van die tegnieke in hierdie verhandeling beskryf, in staat behoort te wees om betroubare metings te kan neem van meeste vliegtuigkonfigurasies. Verdere voorstelle vir die toets van modelle in grondeffek word ook in hierdie hoofstuk gemaak.
