Begaafde Tourettesindroomlyers se relasievorming en leefwereldstigting word gekonstitueer met hul kognitiewe en affektiewe vermoans asook genetiese potensiaal, wat vir beida hul Tourettesindroom en begaafdheid verantwoordelik is. Die verwarring tussen begaafde Tourettesindroomlyers se superieure intellek en hul emosionele onvolwassenheid is die oorsaak van hul relasieprobleme. Negatiewe betekenisgewing en betrokkenheid by hulle relasievorminge bel"nvloed elke faset van hul menswees en gee aanleiding tot die degradering van hul siening van hul eie waarde. Gebrekkige kennis oor begaafdheid en Tourettesindroom veroorsaak dat waardevolle potensiaal en talente vir Suid-Afrika verlore gaan. Daarom moet daar daadwerklike pogings aangewend word om kennis oor begaafde Tourettesindroomlyers aan ouers, skole en universiteite, beskikbaar te stel met 'n konstruktiewe plan van aksie ter ondersteuning van die betrokkenes en tot voordeel van Suid-Afrika. / This study addresses Tourette syndrome as a neuro-genetic condition and the manner whereby it manifests itself in various learning, behavioural and emotional problems experienced by gifted Tourette syndrome sufferers. Their relationship-formation and life world are constituted by their cognitive, emotive and genetic capacity which manifests itself in Tourette syndrome and giftedness. The emotional immaturity which accompanies their superior intellect causes disorientation which results in problems in their relationships. Negative connotations and involvement in their relationship-formation influences each facet of their being and gives rise to the lowering of their perception of their self worth. In South Africa, valuable potential and talent is lost because of an inadequate knowledge of giftedness and Tourette syndrome. Efforts must be directed towards making information about gifted Tourette syndrome sufferers available to parents, schools and universities. Risk culture is defined as norms of behaviour for individuals and groups that determine the collective ability to identify and understand, openly discuss and act on an organisation’s current and future possible risks. Although studies have been done on risk culture, an assessment of the maturity level of risk culture in a South African government organisation has not been reported in the academic literature. Many government organisations have implemented risk management processes but it seems that, subsequently, no tangible benefits have been realised from applying these processes. The reason for this might be that these organisations did not first embed a risk culture. This article assesses the risk culture maturity level of a South African government organisation. Data were gathered by developing and applying a questionnaire and a checklist. In addition, documents were analysed. The results show that the organisation has established basic risk management processes and structures; however, a mature risk culture was not embedded in the organisational processes.

Knowledge engineering in the virtual enterprise : exploring a maturity-based decision support

In product development, lead-time reduction, cost reduction, and quality improvement are issues that companies want to improve on to increase competitiveness. One recent approach to reach this - particularly in the aerospace industry where the complexity of product offers is steadily increasing - is to manage risk by forming virtual enterprises. A virtual enterprise is a network of partner companies that join on equal terms when an opportunity arises to develop a product offer, e.g. a jet engine offer, in a more agile manner than if any of the partners would realise it by themselves. They therefore team up to share risk, investment and resources - to in return also share revenue and profit. A driver for the formation of the virtual enterprise is the ability to effectively utilise partner knowledge assets. However, when sharing and managing knowledge effectively across the virtual enterprise, current practices have yet to evolve to meet the needs of knowledge workers, who may come from different aerospace companies, have different roles, belong to different disciplines and that may also be situated in geographically dispersed locations. Improving product development includes allowing developers from all disciplines to know - as early as possible in the product development process - more about the customer needs, the desired product properties, and the downstream impact of the decisions they choose to make throughout the process. Knowing about the impact in downstream phases would allow for significant time and cost savings due to the avoidance of unnecessary and expensive rework that would otherwise occur much further on in the product's life cycle. Among other things, a virtual enterprise can start organising and mapping the knowledge assets available in their teams, and information overload can be managed by assuring that the right knowledge ends up with the right person, to mention but a few things that can facilitate the everyday work of engineers and their colleagues. When working in a product development project, the virtual enterprise needs to assess the quality of the created knowledge as early as possible to devise the correct actions early. In this thesis, a Gated Maturity Assessment technique including the concept of knowledge maturity has been developed as an example of an improved stage-gate decision-making process. With this approach development teams are able to assess the knowledge maturity level in the content and rationale that is put forward as a basis for a decision - as opposed to only assessing the raw data of the results (i.e. thrust, weight, fuel burn, etc.). Knowledge maturity is used to support decision makers when in the process of assessing a decision base to make a decision whether to go ahead, abort the process, or order rework to be done. Naturally, if the decision base is poor, a decision to go ahead should probably not be taken, as the consequences might be negative. In assessing maturity, decision makers can determine at decision points if the knowledge base is good enough to move forward to the next step in the jet engine component design, if there is need for rework, and what specific areas need to be improved. Decision makers can divert and focus resources to areas of importance due to, for instance, too low maturity levels. Knowledge maturity is a way to - using a criteria scale that prescribes the knowledge needed at each level - help development teams assess and visualise how well they know what they know, and subsequently, what they need to know. This thesis explores the feasibility of using knowledge maturity as a way of supporting knowledge engineering in the context of a development process in aeronautics. / Faste Laboratory

Parenting styles and spiritual maturity.

Relationships between parenting styles practiced in individuals' families of origin and the measurement of individuals' spiritual maturity in adulthood were studied. Relationships between gender and the authoritative (facilitative) parenting style comprised the main focus of the study. Participants for this study were recruited from a large, non-denominational Christian church located in north Texas. A total of 300 individuals were randomly selected. A total of 160 individuals filled out the demographic sheet, the Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ), and the Spiritual Assessment Inventory (SAI). Canonical correlation procedures were performed among the set of SAI scales measuring individuals' spiritual maturity (awareness, instability, grandiosity, realistic acceptance, disappointment, and impression management) and the set of PAQ scales that measure parenting styles (authoritative or facilitative, authoritarian, and permissive) of mothers and fathers. Conclusions about female and male students raised in homes characterized by fathers and mothers with an authoritative (facilitative) parenting style were varied. Female adults raised in homes characterized by fathers and mothers with an authoritative (facilitative) parenting style were not correlated in a positive manner with spiritual maturity. Male adults raised in homes characterized by fathers with an authoritative (facilitative) parenting style demonstrated significance at only a large observed p value and therefore, could not be reported. Male students raised in homes characterized by mothers with an authoritative (facilitative) parenting style were correlated significantly with spiritual maturity in one correlation at the .04 level of significance. In another correlation, at the .003 level of significance, male adults raised in homes characterized by mothers with an authoritative (facilitative) parenting style were not correlated. Some cautions were discussed regarding the findings, and directions for future research on parenting styles and spiritual maturity were discussed.

Ernest Gaines collection of five short stories Bloodline, (1968) depicts the effects of racism and its denigrating effects on the lives of the black men. Gaines use of animal imagery furthers the effects of racism on the psychology of the blacks. The resolution comes around in the form of a mentor who helps the protagonists to break through the debilitating mind-set and work towards a new self-identity no longer defined by the white man. Gaines articulates the effects of lack of maturity, responsibility and understanding on the lives of the protagonists, their families and the community as a whole. Gaines brings out the new avatar of the black man who in his self-actualized journey arrives at an understanding of nurturing, caring and contributing to the community. It marks both the culmination and a beginning of true manhood in the lives of his central characters.

The relationship between the lead pastor's emotional intelligence and pastoral leadership team effectiveness

The purpose of this research was to examine the nature of the relationship among the four major emotional intelligence realms--that is, Identify, Use, Understand, and Manage--of pastoral team leaders to the level of effectiveness of the team he leads. This relationship was evaluated by the lead pastors themselves and the members of their pastoral leadership teams. Three instruments were used in the research process: (1) the Wong and Law Emotional Intelligence Scale--a self-report instrument completed by the lead pastors, (2) the short version of the Team Effectiveness Questionnaire--completed by all participants, and (3) the Leader Emotional Intelligence Strength Rater--a qualitative instrument created by this researcher to be completed by team members to help assess the emotional intelligence of their pastoral team leader and how it influenced the effectiveness of their teams. From this research, four primary discoveries about the nature and strength of these relationships were discerned, one for each emotional intelligence (EI) realm. In the Identify EI realm, it was discovered that a pastoral leader's Identify EI skill of being able to "recognize his own feeling" related strongly to the team effectiveness realm of Principled Leadership. In the Use EI realm, the research revealed that the ability to "inspire others" demonstrated the strongest relationship of the pastoral team leaders' Use EI skills to their teams' effectiveness. Specifically, this skill related to the team effectiveness realm of creating team Collaboration. In the EI Understand realm, the skill of "makes correct assumptions about people" correlated strongly to the team effectiveness realm of Principled Leadership. And in the emotional competency Manage realm, the EI skill of "connects with other people" demonstrated the strongest relationship to the team effectiveness. This Manage EI skill correlated strongly to the team effectiveness area of creating team Collaboration. In sum, this research has demonstrated that within the pastoral team leaders and the teams that were the subjects of this research, specific EI abilities of the pastoral team leader relate to and influence particular realms team effectiveness. Orientador: Fernando José Zara / Resumo: Esta dissertação visou estudar o sistema reprodutor masculino do camarão Xiphopenaeus kroyeri com o intuito de esclarecer a maturação dos machos e incluir mais informações sobre a morfologia e reprodução dos animais da tribo Trachypeneini. No primeiro capítulo foi testada a sincronia entre a maturidade morfológica, determinada pela presença de petasma, e a maturidade fisiológica, determinada pela observação microscópica de espermatozoides e espermatóforos no vaso deferente (VD). Para isso, o sistema reprodutor de indivíduos machos juvenis e adultos foi analisado histologicamente e descrito. A partir da classe de tamanho de 12 ┤13 mm de comprimento de carapaça (CC) os indivíduos apresentam petasma, contudo a presença de espermatozoides e espermatóforos no sistema reprodutor deu-se somente a partir da classe de 14 ┤15 mm de CC. O sistema reprodutor apresenta um par de testículos lobados fusionados, onde são produzidos os espermatozoides, os quais se mostram prontos ainda neste órgão. Os espermatozoides são direcionados aos VD, os quais são divididos em região proximal (PVD), onde os espermatóforos são montados, e regiões média (MVD) e distal (DVD), onde são produzidos os principais componentes do fluido seminal. Ao final do VD encontra-se a ampola, uma glândula adjacente ao VD que produz secreção ausente de espermatozoides e espermatóforos. (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: In this work, we analyzed the male reproductive system of the shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri to clarify the male maturation and add more information about the morphology and reproduction of the tribe Trachypeneini. In the first chapter, we investigated the synchrony between the morphological maturity, determined by the presence of petasma, and the physiological maturity, determined by the macroscopic observation of spermatozoa and spermatophores in the vas deferens (VD). For this, the male reproductive system of juveniles and adult males was histologically analyzed and described. From the size class of 12 ┤ 13 mm of carapace length (CL) the individuals presented petasma, however the presence of spermatozoa and spermatophores was detected in the male reproductive system from the size class of 14 ┤ 15 mm of CL. The reproductive system presented a pair of fusioned lobed testes, where the spermatozoa are produced, which are fully matured in this organ. The spermatozoa are directed to the VD, which are divided in proximal region (PVD), where the spermatophores are packed, and medial (MVD) and distal (DVD) regions, where the main compounds of the seminal fluid are produced. At the end of the VD is located the ampoule, an adjacent glandule which produces secretion absent of spermatozoa and spermatophores.
