Strömberg, Karin, Westerlund, Gita January 2005 (has links)

Health should be seen as a resource in daily life so people can feel satisfaction and social support network has been shown to have a significant impact on health. Another important determinant on health is education. There is a strong interrelationship between health and education. The centre of work in health education and promotion is the development of self-esteem. The aim of the study was to investigate the level of self-esteem, social network and experience of school education among girl’s 13-16 years, in Kitwe Zambia, in order to increase knowledge about how to learn to strengthen self-esteem and empowerment in girls. This investigation is a cross-sectional survey and we have chosen to use a quantitative method such as questionnaires. Our study received the approval of the University of Kristianstad Ethics Committee. The result shows that the girls think that the school is important for their future and that they enjoy going to school. But 34% of the girls felt that the school did not treat everybody the same and 50% of the girls were not involved at all in any student club. The results in our study showed that there were no statistical connections between level of self-esteem, social network and experience of school education. Our conclusion is that it did not matter what level of self-esteem the girls had, they had a good social network and a positive attitude towards school. A high level of self-esteem increases the young girls believes in themselves and that they can feel capable of taking a bigger part in the society. We hope that this study will underline the importance of women’s education, empowerment and self-esteem for their development. We believe that this may not change the world, but it is one good step in the development of a country.

Linderoth, Louise, Åkesson, Maria January 2005 (has links)

Sexually transmitted diseases among youths is a growing problem. Generally, the knowledge about sexually transmitted diseases is relatively good, however, the risktaking among youths is great. The schools education regarding sex is often insufficient. The foundation for avoiding STD is knowledge. However, knowledge does not solve the attitude problem regarding the use of condoms. The purpose of our study was to describe the knowledge of older teenagers regarding STD, the sexual education in high school, and the youths attitude towards the usage of condoms. High school seniors were selected as respondents. This study uses a quantitative method. A survey was performed to collect data since the subject might be considered sensitive. The survey was distributed to 189 students of which 175 answered the survey. The result shows that schools are the biggest source of information regarding sexual education. Also, the results show that women, more often than men, are exposed to the risks of being infected with STD. To highlight the importance of preventive work for youths sexual behavior, we believe that school is a very important place. In conclusion, a good system for teaching about sexually related topics in school is very important in order to decrease the risky behavior of the youth.

Omvårdnad av självmordsnära patienter inom psykiatrin - En kvalitativ intervjuundersökning utifrån ett sjuksköterskeperspektiv

Carlén, Pontus January 2005 (has links)

Suicide and attempted suicide frequently occur in society today and represent a major public health problem. In inpatient psychiatric care the nurse have a central role when caring for suicidal patients. Few systematic studies exists that address the nurse’s practical work with these patients. The purpose of this study was therefore to describe the nursing care of suicidal patients as it was perceived by registered clinical expert nurses. The study has a qualitative approach and was conducted with open thematic interviews with eleven nurses. During the analysis, preformed as a qualitative content analysis, two different themes emerged. These were nursing care as change and nursing care as control/none-control. Change incorporated that the nurse mediated hope, created dialog, carried the patient’s suffering, inspired safety and provided basic nursing care. Control had its’ origin in an inner threat of suicide on the ward which constituted a none-control. Non-control has a paradoxical relation to control since it resulted in an increased activity to assess, observe and control the patient’s behaviour. The control strategies used was according to the nurses stressful both for patient and nurse. Self-examinations and explanations characterised the time after the none-control that a suicide constituted.

Hälsoeffekter av patientundervisning och läkemedelsanvändning vid Parkinsons sjukdom

Lindskov, Susanne January 2005 (has links)

Abstract

Background

Parkinson’s disease is a chronically not curable progressive disease that leads to different degrees of disability. Controlled studies on how patient education influences subjective health in Parkinson’s disease are lacking.

Aim

The aim of this study was to examine the influence patient education had on drug requirements and on subjective health status of persons with Parkinson’s disease.

Methodology

A short form of Health Survey, SF-12, was used to measure perceived health. SF-12 was administered before and one month after patient education (intervention group; n= 48), and in waiting list control (n= 48). The control group was measured two times with similar intervals as the intervention group but without education between. Demographic data and daily antiparkinsonian drug requirements were collected from the patients’ medical records.

Results

No group differences were detected regarding physical and mental health. Individual items showed significant differences in social capacity and fatigue between the intervention group compared to control group at the first measure time. There was a significant increase in daily antiparkinsonian drug requirements in the control group, but not in the intervention group, between the first and the second measurement.

Conclusion

No positive effects of patient education to persons with Parkinson’s disease were detected. However, the drug requirements increased among those in the control group while it was stable among those in the intervention group. This may have been due to insufficient responsiveness of the outcome measure and that increase of antiparkinsonian drugs in the control group masked potential intervention effects. It might be that a measure of coping or empowerment is more suitable to detect positive outcomes of this type of intervention.

Keywords: Parkinson’s disease, education, L-Dopa, health status, SF-12.
