Extended LTE Coverage For Indoor Machine Type Communication

Berglund, Joel January 2013 (has links)
The interest of Machine Type Communication (MTC) is increasing and is expected to play an important role in the future network society. In the process of increasing the number of connected devices, the coverage plays an important role. This thesis work aims to study the possibility of supporting coverage limited MTC-devices within LTE by extending the LTE coverage. It shows that coverage increase by means of repetition is a good candidate, which allows for a significant increase without hardware upgrades at a low cost in terms of radio resources. For inter-site distances up to 2500 m, the proposed repetition scheme with an increase of 20 dB allows for almost complete coverage where today’s LTE have significant lack of coverage. It also shows that even though the increased coverage implies higher resource usage, the limitation is not in the number of users supported, but rather the coverage at longer inter-site distances.

Technique d'accès pour la communication machine-à-machine dans LTE/LTE-A / Access layer techniques for machine type communications in LTE/LTE-A

Zhou, Kaijie 05 December 2013 (has links)
Machine type communications is seen as a form of data communication, among devices and/or from devices to a set of servers, that do not necessarily require human interaction. However, it is challenging to accommodate MTC in LTE as a result of its specific characteristics and requirements. The aim of this thesis is to propose mechanisms and optimize the access layer techniques for MTC in LTE. For uplink access, we propose two methods to improve the performance of random access in terms of latency: a packet aggregation method and a Transmission Time Interval bundling scheme. To further reduce the uplink latency and enable massive number of connected device, we propose a new contention based access method (CBA) to bypass both the redundant signaling in the random access procedure and also the latency of regular scheduling. For downlink reception, we propose two methods to analyze the performance of discontinuous reception DRX mode for MTC applications: the first with the Poisson distribution and the second with the Pareto distribution for sporadic traffic. With the proposed models, the power saving factor and wake up latency can be accurately estimated for a given choice of DRX parameters, thus allowing to select the ones presenting the optimal tradeoff.

Machine-type-communication in 5G cellular system

Li, Yue 28 August 2018 (has links)
The rapid development of Machine-Type-Communication (MTC) has brought big challenges to cellular networks such as super-dense devices and high-shadowing channels which may substantially decrease the spectrum efficiency and increase devices' power consumption. It is pressing to improve the transmission efficiency for MTC due to the limited wireless spectrum. Lower efficiency may also lead to longer transmission time and more energy consumption which conflict with MTC's requirement of lower power consumption. In order to address the above issues, we propose to apply Network Coding (NC) and Device-to-Device (D2D) communications to MTC devices. Our approach introduces an additional delay for local packet exchange, which is acceptable given that MTC traffic typically has the feature of delay tolerance to certain degree. The benefit of the proposed approach is that the cellular transmissions are no longer user-specific, and thus an additional multi-user diversity gain is achieved. The cellular transmission efficiency will also be increased. How to apply the proposed approach for both downlink and uplink has been studied. For the downlink, in addition to the reduction of cellular resource consumption, the MTC devices' feedback load can also be significantly reduced because the cellular transmissions are not sensitive to user-specific errors. In the uplink, besides the enhanced transmission efficiency for full-buffer traffic, an additional small-data aggregation gain is achieved for MTC small-data traffic. Theoretical performance analyses for both downlink and uplink and the corresponding numerical evaluations are given. Though the proposed NC and D2D approach can improve the transmission efficiency by exploring multi-user diversity gain, poor-quality MTC channels still exist which affect system performance. When the whole group MTC devices in an area experience high shadowing and penetration loss, we have to increase either the resource consumption or the transmitting power to overcome the poor-quality channels. The existing small-cell solution can improve the MTC channel quality, but MTC's unique traffic characteristics and quality of service requirements, as well as other practical issues, make the small-cell deployment unprofi table. Therefore, we propose a solution using Floating Relay (FR) given the mature technologies of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). We rst target on the high-shadowing channels of the MTC devices and introduce the FR into the cellular system to improve the transmission efficiency and maximize the system capacity. An optimization problem, given the capacity limit of the FR's back-haul link and the maximum transmission power of each user, is formulated and then theoretically solved. An effective on-line fight path planning algorithm is also proposed. Then, we extend the FR concept to a bigger picture and propose the UAV-assisted heterogeneous cellular solution. Detailed system design and comprehensive analyses on FR-cells deployment including frequency reuse, interference, backhaul resource allocation, and coverage are given. For UAV assisted networking systems, mobility and topology play important roles. How to dispatch a UAV to the optimal location in a mesh network to enhance the coverage and service of the existing network is a critical issue. Given the topology of existing service nodes, a new supplementary UAV can be sent to improve the quality of service especially for the users with poor-quality channels. The location of a newly added UAV is optimized to improve the service quality to the worst point. In summary, we propose two means to improve the transmission efficiency for MTC in this thesis work. The NC and D2D approach can be used when some of the MTC devices have chances to experience better channels because of the fast fading and uneven shadowing. Otherwise, the FR can be applied to proactively improve the channel quality for MTC. The NC and D2D approach sticks to the latest standard in the cellular system and thus provides a down-to-earth and backward-compatible MTC solution for 5G cellular system. The UAV-assisted heterogeneous cellular solution and UAV mesh networks can enable mobile Internet and ultra-reliable low latency communications, respectively. These solutions together effectively and efficiently support MTC, which is key to future proliferation of Internet of Things / Graduate

Desenvolvimento de interfaces gráficas para estatística Bayesiana aplicada à comparação mista de tratamentos / Graphical User Interface development for Bayesian Statistics applied to Mixed Treatment Comparison

Marcelo Goulart Correia 12 September 2013 (has links)
Based on the progress made by the pharmaceutical industry, several medications have emerged to combat diseases. These drugs have similar topic effects but with subtle changes in their biochemical structure, thus competition between the pharmaceutical industry becomes increasingly fierce. In order to compare the effectiveness of these drugs, appear different methodologies with the objective of find what would be the best medicine for a given situation. One of the methods studied is the Mixed Treatment Comparision (MTC) whose objective is to find the effectiveness of certain drugs in studies and / or clinical trials that address, even if indirectly, the drugs studied. The use of this methodology is too complex because it requires knowledge of programming languages in statistical environments, beyond the mastery of the methodologies applied to this technique. The main objective of this study is to create a graphical user interface (GUI) that facilitates the use of MTC for users who have no knowledge in programming languages, which is open source and cross-platform. The expectation about this interface is that the use of more comprehensive and advanced techniques is facilitated, moreover, make the teaching about the topic easier for people who do not know the method

Can a Financial Statement Pronouncement Increase State Tax Compliance and Revenues? Understanding the Effect of FIN 48 on the National Nexus Program

Davis, Ann Boyd 01 May 2010 (has links)
Since 1982, 40 states and the District of Columbia have offered amnesty programs. In December 1990, the Multistate Tax Commission (MTC) established the National Nexus Program (NNP), a permanent tax amnesty program. Prior literature has focused on amnesty programs and has shown that these programs do little to increase tax revenues and compliance when increased future enforcement is absent. I examine the impact of the NNP on state corporate tax revenues. From 1991 through 2008, state corporate tax revenues are significantly lower than revenues from 1973 through 1990. Further, I find that states joining the NNP have a negative impact on state corporate tax revenues; however, the initial year impacts revenues differently than all other years. The implementation of Financial Interpretation No. 48 (FIN 48) provides another reason for firms to disclose in the NNP. Specifically, to reduce the FIN 48 liability on financial statements, firms may disclose in the NNP. The primary purpose of FIN 48 is to increase the comparability and transparency of financial reporting of income taxes through requiring consistent recording and disclosure across firms. Although FIN 48 has been replaced with the Accounting Standard Codification 740-10, I continue to refer to FIN 48 because of familiarity. I examine whether FIN 48 resulted in an increased number of firms entering the NNP by state. I also investigate whether FIN 48 impacted the dollar amount of NNP disclosures by state. Using aggregated proprietary data obtained from the NNP and matched with hand-collected data from 1994 through 2008, I find that FIN 48 has a positive effect on the number of NNP disclosures but has no impact on the dollar amount of disclosure. Rather, for states joining the NNP, the dollar amount of disclosure tends to be driven by the states adopting combined reporting requirements. In examining publicly-traded firms on an individual case basis, I find that economic presence and voluntary compliance initiatives predominately have a negative effect on the dollar amount of disclosure while FIN 48 has an insignificant impact.

Planning Their First Language Lesson: Applying Constructivist Values to the Design of Objective Training for Part-Time Teachers at the Missionary Training Center

Rudd, Chandler Scott 11 July 2009 (has links) (PDF)
The newly hired teachers at the Missionary Training Center are expected to learn to teach foreign language well enough to prepare students to communicate functionally in that language within 2-3 months. These teachers have very little to no language teaching experience and must tend to the responsibilities of this part-time job while juggling the demands of full-time school work and social lives. This report details the design and development of a prototype training program aimed to initiate young teachers into the culture of methods and tools employed at the MTC by walking them through the process of planning their first language lesson. The Missionary Training Center has a rich culture of language learning practices. While there are specific expectations related to language teaching espoused by MTC administration, there is also a strong community of language teachers who routinely adapt MTC methods and invent practices to best meet the needs of their students. This project is an attempt to balance the request to develop particular competencies with the need for new teachers to be assimilated into the community of language teachers. This is done by infusing an objective training program with constructivist values, including authentic activity, modeling, representing multiple perspectives, generating, and reflecting.
