Healing Sounds: An Anthropology of Music Therapy

Bérubé, Michelle 12 December 2018 (has links)
Music therapy has been recognized as a legitimate health practice in Canada since after the Second World War. While research shows the emotional, social and health benefits of music therapy, researchers have failed to agree on the reason music can be beneficial to health. I argue that affect could be the key to understanding the myriad ways in which music, and music therapy, can have a positive effect on health. Through the lens of affect theory, I explore embodiment, relationship-building and aesthetic creation as three areas in which music can allow the harnessing of affect towards health goals. I note music’s powerful affect on the human body and movement, and the ways in which these affects are mobilized towards specific clinical goals. I explore the various human-to-human and human-to-sound relationships that are mobilized, created or strengthened through music therapy interventions, and how they relate to health and to the affect of “becoming”. Finally, I note the strong evidence for musical and aesthetic creation as a part of self-care, both by music therapists and by their clients, and argue for a broader understanding of how creativity impacts health, by allowing people to affect their environments and “become themselves”.

An exploration of how adult patients in a private mental health care facility experience singing in a group music therapy intervention in relation to their well-being

Heuer, Inamari January 2021 (has links)
This study was situated in a private mental health care facility in South Africa. It explored the participants' experience of being sung to and actively singing in a group music therapy setting. It also explored the impact of singing on the well-being of adult mental health care patients. This study used secondary data to analyse the responses to two questions from a qualitative questionnaire anonymously completed by 134 participants. The data were analysed by using thematic analysis and nine themes were identified: presence and voice of therapist; experience of song choice and content; experience of collective singing during adapted GIM; freedom of participation; strengthening and upliftment; relaxation and grounding; emotional regulation and expression; self-reflection and introspection; and a new experience. The emerging themes from the data source highlighted how the participants experienced the act of singing as influencing their physical, emotional/psychological, social, and spiritual areas of well-being. It also emphasised the importance of a well-trained and skilled music therapist. The analysis further revealed how carefully chosen songs and lyrical content can bring about an experience of strengthening, upliftment, relaxation, emotional regulation, expression, and enjoyment, all of which are powerful and profound affordances towards the well-being of patients with mental illness. / Mini Dissertation (MMus (Music Therapy))--University of Pretoria, 2021. / Music / MMus (Music Therapy) / Unrestricted

The Effect of Therapeutic Music Playlists on Symptoms of Anxiety: A Clinical Trial

Bautch, Katie A. 01 January 2021 (has links) (PDF)
This is a pilot study examining the comparative effectiveness of self-administered therapeutic playlists in the treatment of anxiety symptoms. Interventions examined during this study include the musical contour regulation playlist (MCR-P) and a one-directional mood vectoring playlist (MV-P). Measures included the Spielberger State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and a Likert-type scale for participants to rate their pre- to post-listening levels of anxiety. At the conclusion of the study, participants took part in an interview which were analyzed for data that could help inform for whom the MCR-P intervention would be best suited. Both interventions discussed in this study are grounded in existing research in the fields of music therapy, psychotherapy, and neuroscience, and all playlists are personalized to take into account the musical preferences of each participant. Findings indicated that there was a significant relationship between use of the MCR-P and a reduction in symptoms of state and trait anxiety scores in participants with pretest trait anxiety scores at or above the 85th percentile (state p = 0.023; trait p = 0.037), and state anxiety scores in all participants (state p = 0.026). Analysis of all participant scores also indicated that there was a significant relationship between use of the MCR-P and a reduction in pre- to post-listening anxiety (p = 0.029) with greater effectiveness in participants with pretest trait anxiety scores at or above the 85th percentile (p = 0.01). Findings must be interpreted with caution due to the small sample size, but they indicate that this may be an effective tool to assist patients in the management of anxiety symptoms.

Integrative research review: effect of music therapy on anxiety in patients with acute myocardial infarction in intensive care unit

Yue, Anna Mee Ting 01 January 2000 (has links)
The purpose of this integrative research review is to summarize the research studies of the effect of music therapy on anxiety of cardiovascular patients with acute myocardial infarction in the intensive care unit. Studies from 1990-2000 were examined for inclusion in the review. The initial library search yielded 65 articles; however, only four studies met inclusion criteria. This review covers a description of music therapy including historical, physiological, and psychological aspects. It explores the effects of music therapy on the cardiovascular system and in reducing anxiety. It also analyzes the common and conflicting findings along with the implication for practice and research. Findings support improvement in psychological and physiological parameters with music intervention. Music therapy not only has no adverse effects on ill patients but also has therapeutic effects in relieving anxiety and creating familiarity in intensive care. Recommendations for future research includes evaluating the effectiveness of music therapy with various cultural groups to examine the impact of music on psychoneuroimmunological variables are needed.

A Critical and Analytical Evaluation of Experimental Data Currently Available Concerning the Therapeutic Use of Music

Perry, Mary Aileen 08 1900 (has links)
The problem which is reported in these pages represents an attempt to bring into one work a critical and analytical survey of the material currently available in the field of music therapy. There is such a wealth of new material, especially since the termination of the war, that the necessity for a new and up-to-date compilation of material is evident. The objective of this thesis is to collect general information as to the theory and practices of music therapy, rather than to secure for purposes of statistical analysis great numbers of detailed items in regard to a technique that has not yet been carried to a point where it can be standardized. However, this compilation does include some actual experiments which have been conducted in hospitals with the object of determining the effect on physical and mental patients of certain musical compositions and certain instruments.

Music Therapy Assessment for Alert Hospice Patients: An Ecomap Approach for Assessing Music Preferences

January 2020 (has links)
abstract: ABSTRACT Individuals receiving hospice care at the end of life have a unique set of needs, requiring interdisciplinary assessment and treatment to meet their multidimensional circumstances and create a supportive and comfortable experience. Music therapy is often an integral component of hospice care utilized to treat the whole person. While there are published music therapy assessment tools for use with the hospice population, there is no assessment tool specifically aimed at understanding the role of music preference in the context of the hospice patient’s multidimensional musical ecosystem identity. The purpose of this thesis was to create an assessment tool to understand and document the individualized connections between a hospice patient’s familiar and preferred music and their musical identity, in order to increase cultural awareness and to utilize music selection with purpose while supporting and empowering the patient. The proposed music preference assessment tool utilizes an ecomap structure and combines theories and philosophies from the fields of music therapy and social work. The needs of the hospice population are identified and music therapy is discussed as a treatment modality in hospice. Existing music therapy and social work assessments are identified and examined and elements of each are utilized in the creation of the proposed music preference assessment tool. A template and example assessment tool are provided with considerations for clinical implications and uses. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Music Therapy 2020
