Schöffel, Debora Grando January 2016 (has links)
Dyonelio Machado, author of the novel “Os Ratos”, stands out for having broken with the literary structures of the Brazilian Gaucho literature and for abandoning the myth of the hero on horseback to highlight the urban essence of the Gaucho capital, Porto Alegre. This writer used his persuasive ways for readers to understand him, he knew that he was playing with the literary world, and in a certain way he was resentful of the critical incomprehension, criticism being closely watched by censorship. Naziazeno, the narrative’s main character, has an origin in the rural propriety, but he now lives stuck to the city and to its metropolitan fierce rhythm. He walks through the streets, takes the tram, works in a public repartition and now and then looks to the past, remembering of his childhood and of how the city in which he grew up was in many ways different from the one in which he lives. This work’s aim is to discuss the urban descriptions found in “Os Ratos” according to the Cultural History method, among whose principles stand out the arguments that affirm that the world is only perceived as a representation through a structure of culturally constructed conventions, schemes and stereotypes. The real will not stop being real, because it is exactly fictionality that guarantees identity to social relations, configuring the real and the imaginary not as opposed things but as indispensable complements to the form of existence of social life. This strategy shows how to take the best advantage from the crossing of images and discourses of the cities, generating thus a deepening of the relations between literature and history, beyond the base which is the city, the urban context and its transformations. The literary and historical narratives bring discourses that would help reassemble the urban reality, leading to a convincement of the reader and his or her transposition to another time. What makes the novel something more than a simple account is the fact that the author seeks to comprehend the city by portraying the economic and structural changes, for it was passing through a period of effervescence and modernization. Due to his sensible vision, several intrinsic aspects of the urban environment, which are intertwined in the transformation and modernization of the city, appear in Dyonelio Machado’s novel. Not only this work but several works of literature can be used as sources of research; they have helped to comprehend new points of the city, which are not always expressed in history, and they also complement the architects and urban planners’ quests in the construction of the social imaginary and of an epoch.

Silva, Tatiana Tavares da January 2013 (has links)
The following essay aims to analyze the poor devil's role on Os ratos (The rats), a novel by Dyonélio Machado, as well as to take a closer look at the main reviews the book has already gotten and starting from them to trace new paths for analysis. As a starting point written essays by José Paulo Paes, Fernando Gil and Luís Bueno were selected. The main aspects in focus in this work include: the poor devil's role within the historical context of the 1930s, the influence of urban growth on poor lower middle class and the favor relationships established by a part of the population who could not fit into the new order set up by modern society. Within the analytic strategies used are the set-up of a summary for Dyonélio Machado's romance's chapters, taking into account these are just numbered in the book, and also the set up of two charts showing the path followed in the narrative by the main character, Naziazeno Barbosa. At last, this essay analyzes the poor devil's character within the work of Dyonélio Machado, based on the short stories of Um pobre homem (A poor man), published in 1927. The results have showed that the poor devil Naziazeno shares its protagonism in Os ratos with another character: the city. With its new characteristics brought together by urbanization, the city sets the mood for Naziazeno's disgrace and keeps pointing to him at all times there is no way someone like him, without a penny to his name, to fit into the new mechanics of modern society. On account of the main character, Naziazeno, the current essay has shown him to be a poor devil who can't seem to take work as a path to a more relaxed life, preferring to depend on the favors and the sympathy others may have going for him. Regarding the author, Dyonélio Machado, the research has found out that ever since the early poor devil characters conceived by him on Um pobre homem all the way to Os ratos there has been a great evolution, not only in the way they are described but specially concerning the style of narrator taken on by him.

_________________________________________________________________________________ ABSTRACT / This paper analyzes one of the main works of what came to be conventionally called “The novel of the thirties”, Os ratos (The Mice), by Dyonelio Machado. Under the basic concepts regarding nation and the unsuccessful hero figure, present in a certain novel of the thirties, relationships are established between this type of protagonist and the vision of nation. In order to establish these relationships, we have analyzed four novels from that decade, by different authors, in which we identify the presence of this unsuccessful hero. From the identification of this special type of protagonist, relationships are established between it and the nation portrayed in these novels. The study of the main work in this paper, Os ratos, allows for a deeper understanding of these same elements, expanding the analysis to reach the understanding of how narrator, protagonist, time and space are structured and are related in the narrative of the failure of the protagonist, and up to which extent they denounce the deformities of the nation, which are represented by the city of Porto Alegre in incipient process of urbanization and industrialization.

The relation between literature and history is a crucial part of the studies regarding literary critic and corresponds to an essential dimension to the possibility of contemplating the development of a Marxist esthetic. As we realize that the esthetic reflection is not exclusive the art, but a reality from which man has yet to make sense of, it is possible to grasp that literature and society are connected, moving back and forth just the same as historical progress. The studies of György Lukács point towards the essence-appearance dialectic, which also holds a proximity with History itself, considering the need of achieving connections not fully accessible, so that we may reach the essence of life itself – activity that requires a truly realistic art to be fulfilled, granted its faculty to piece together man as a whole. Along with politic turmoil undergone during the beginning of the 20th century and the ascension of totalitarian and fascist regimes around the world, the artistic expression undergoes significant alterations due to the instability and violence that becomes part of people’s daily lives. Intending to demonstrate how modern literature is capable of conserving characteristics common to artistic objects that surpass national and continental borders, as well as problematizing space and its connections with violence present in its making, the novels The Tartar Steppe, by the italian Dino Buzzati, and Os ratos (The Mice), written by Dyonélio Machado, have been chosen. Hence, the goal of this study is to analyze, in the cited narratives, the representation of wait and solitude, the individual’s difficult situation as a victim of the dictatorial and totalitarian regimes in the first decades of the 20th century, considering the necessity of confluence of culture and arts with the problems encountered in people’s national and social lives – it is the realism as poetry that enables the grasp of history and shows, through art, the capability the discover the necessary strength to keep moving towards human progress.

Cardoso, Fernando Juarez de January 2013 (has links)
This paper aims to discuss the representation of poverty in three works of Brazilian literature from different periods - Til (1871), of José de Alencar, Vidas Secas (1938), of Graciliano and Os Ratos (1935), of Dyonelio Machado.
