Múltiplas populações com filtros UV do Telescópio Espacial Hubble e ajuste de isócronas em aglomerados globulares do Bojo / Multiple populations with UV filters from the Hubble Space Telescope and isochrone fitting in Bulge globular clusters

Oliveira, Raphael Augusto Pereira de 28 February 2019 (has links)
The globular clusters (GCs) are fundamental laboratories to study the formation and chemodynamical evolution of the Milky Way, as they formed during the initial episodes of star formation in galaxies. In the last decade, photometric and spectroscopic observational results have challenged the classical paradigm of GCs formation in a single star formation burst, giving rise to the debate about multiple stellar populations. With the purpose of better explore this phenomenon, the Hubble Space Telescope GO-13297 program (UV Legacy Survey of Galactic Globular Clusters, PI: G. Piotto) obtained photometry for 57 GCs with the UV/blue filters F275W, F336W and F438W (WFC3/UVIS), sensitive to variations in CNO abundances, and consequently able to distinguish multiple populations along the color-magnitude diagrams. Combined with previous photometry in the optical filters F606W and F814W (GO-10775 program, PI A. Sarajedini), they provide an unprecedented photometric database for GCs. This work presents the analysis of seven of these clusters, six of them from the Galactic Bulge (NGC 6304, NGC 6624, NGC 6637, NGC 6652, NGC 6717 and NGC 6723) and one located in the inner Halo for reference purposes (NGC 6362). This sample is representative of the two peaks in the metallicity distribution of Bulge GCs, with [Fe/H] ~ -0.5 and -1.0. We adopted homogeneous methods to the separation of multiple populations in the different evolutionary stages and to the isochrone fitting, with the purpose of analyze comparatively the two metallicity groups, and check whether there occurs any detectable age difference between the multiple populations. Classification algorithms with machine learning, and methods using Bayesian statistics (maximum likelihood and MCMC) were implemented and a Python tool, named SIRIUS, was developed by the group. The results point to a trend of larger ages (~ 13 Gyr) for the more metal-poor clusters with a blue horizontal branch, compared with 12.0-12.5 Gyr for the other GCs. The results for the multiple populations indicate slightly larger ages for the first generation in general, but with differences lower than 400 Myr compared with the second generation. The result of 13.14 +0.25/-0.43 Gyr for the cluster NGC 6717 is surprising because this is the least massive cluster of the sample, with the highest fraction of first generation stars and with a blue horizontal branch: features that place it as one of the oldest objects in the Galaxy. These results are quite relevant, with direct impacts on the formation scenarios of the innermost regions of the Galaxy.

Four participants, of both sex, with ages between 16 and 24, were paired in two dyads: each participant of a dyad worked simultaneously with the other on one of two computers connected through a network. The experiment lasted for 12 (90 minutes) sessions for one day and 13 for the other. All participants were exposed to the following experimental conditions: a) Forced Cooperation Condition when they could only work cooperatively; b) Forced Individual Condition when they could only work individually, and c) Choice Condition when they could choose to play alone or play with the other person . In the first session, of training, participants were submitted to all three Experimental Conditions; in the following sessions either the Forced Cooperation Condition or the Choice Condition was available. During the training session, the cooperation task was assigned value FR 1 and the magnitude of reinforcement value 4; in the subsequent sessions, the magnitude of reinforcement was increased to 10, 20 and 30. The FR was also increased up to FR11. The programming for the individual task in all sessions was FR 1 and magnitude of reinforcement of value 1. Literature reports on the rupture in the preference to cooperate when FR value was increased were not found on the present study, possibly as a result of the gradual increase on the FR (from 1 to 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 11), as well as the increase in the magnitude of reinforcement. Results showed that all participants chose to cooperate form the onset and remained cooperating until the end of the experiment / Este estudo foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de investigar algumas relações do comportamento cooperativo, manipulando-se reforços de maior magnitude para tarefa cooperativa do que para a tarefa individual, e aumento gradativo da razão para obtenção de reforços na alternativa cooperativa.

Interféromètre à somme de fréquences dédié à l'imagerie haute résolution pour l'astronomie en bande L / Up conversion interferometer dedicated to high resolution imagery for astronomy into the L band

Szemendera, Ludovic 16 May 2017 (has links)
Stellar interferometers are high angular resolution devices, allowing for detailed research of the Universe. This thesis describes the in-lab implementation of a sum frequency generation interferometer dedicated to the infrared detection in the L band : ALOHA@3.39. In the aim of limiting thermal noise due to the room radiation, and benefit mature detectors and fibered components, this device includes a sum frequency generation non-linear process on each of its arms. Stellar radiations around 3.39 μm are transposed to around 810 nm thanks to PPLN cristals powered by a single pump signal at 1064 nm. The first part presents our global experimental context and theoretical elements about this thesis. The second part deals with the conception, the implementation and characterisation of the test bench ALOHA@3.39. The third part tables in-lab experimental results. Repeated measurements of the fringe contrast on high flux regime allow to calibrate the instrumental contrast of the set-up. First measurements on photon counting regime show we are currently able to detect interference fringes with high contrast with only 100 fW at the input of each arm. Finally, our research led us to realise interference fringes detection via the ALOHA@3.39 prototype, observing a thermal source, considered as a black body. This thesis concludes on an estimation of the limiting reachable magnitude, and on the future use of new PPLN technologies.

Desenvolvimento e validação de um modelo de escala psicofísica de razão capaz de mensurar o gradiente de generalização da dor relacionada ao movimento em indivíduos com queixas musculoesqueléticas crônicas / Development and validation of a model of psychophysical ratio scale that is capable to measure the gradient of movement related pain generalization in patients with chronic musculoskeletal complaints

Alaiti, Rafael Krasic 29 May 2017 (has links)
The pain perception involves an active process of information interpretation whose main goal is the subsequent selection of protective behaviors to contexts or a set of stimuli that were associated by our brain to an injury or a potential risk of injury, without a necessarily structural change that could explain these symptoms. While the pain related to the execution of movements and the maintenance of postures is currently the main reason why patients with chronic musculoskeletal complaints seek medical help, most of the measurement instruments specific to this patient population do not assess pain in the context in which it is perceived and those who do so, have access to inferior levels of measurement and exhibit various construction errors. Objective: To develop and validate a psychophysical ratio scale that is capable of evaluationg the movement related pain generalization gradient in individuals with shoulder pain. Methods: A total of 180 patients with shoulder pain, right-handed, symptomatic, sedentary and with complaint for at least 3 months were recruited from patients in care in the Shoulder Group of IOTFMUSP to perform three experiments. In the first two experiments, the internal validation of the psychophysical ratio scale were made by the cross-modality matching procedure and 10 movements have been selected to compose the official scale, respectively. During the experiment 3, the development of The Psychophysical Scale for Movement Related Shoulder Pain (PSMRSP) was completed and the psychometric validation process of the instrument was initiated. Results: The internal validation of the scale based on the psychophysical theory, held in experiment 1, demonstrated that the movement related pain can be measured in a ratio level of measurement. Through the analysis of the values obtained by the magnitude estimations of the perceived pain during the execution of 10 movements, selected during the experiment 2, and the power function exponent obtained from these values, we were able to understand how the pain of each individual manifests in the context in which it is felt and to measure the gradient of pain generalization along the movements selected for the scale. The psychometric analyzes performed during the experiment 3 demonstrated positive content validity, internal consistency and construct validity with no ceiling and floor effects, presenting an adequate inter-rater reliability. Conclusion: The findings of the present study demonstrated that the PSMRSP provide a quantitative measure of the generalization gradient and of the range of variation of the movement related pain in subjects with shoulder pain with a higher informativeness than the other scales available to evaluate the functional pain in this patient population

Influência da intensidade de carregamento e utilização de placa oclusal plana em supraestruturas metálicas parafusadas sobre implantes: estudo fotoelástico / Influence of the intensity of loading and use of an occlusal splint flat screw-retained metal superstructures on implants: photoelastic study

Fabíola Marchezini Teixeira 30 August 2010 (has links)
Aim: To assess using qualitative photoelastic studies the tensions generated in the long axis of the implants and interimplants in the cervical, middle and apical regions when subjected to different loads with or without interposition of occlusal splint flat. Methods: Four photoelastic models were fabricated with two external hexagon implants (Neodent) located in the space corresponding to the second premolar and molar inferiors. In each model, screw-retained metal superstructures were installed on the implants. Photoelastic models were positioned in the circular polariscope for distribution of isochromatic fringes around the implants. Photographic records were obtained before and after application of different types of loading: 1- 30kg without plate; 2- 30kg with plate; 3- 60kg without plate; 4- 60kg with plate; 5- 90kg without plate; 6- 90kg with plate. Results: After the analysis, the presence of tension in the models without the application of occlusal load after torque application (20Ncm) was observed. The decrease in stress with the application of the occlusal splint flat became more evident after the application of 60kg load. Generally, the major stress magnitude occurred in the cervical region for interimplant areas and in the apical region around implants, with a decrease of 57,77%, between the three magnitudes of loads applied after use of plate. Conclusions: The data obtained in this studies demonstrate that the best stress distribution in the implants is obtained by interposing occlusal splint flat, with the application of a 60kg load, and a decrease of 66,66%.

Gradience in grammar : experimental and computational aspects of degrees of grammaticality

Keller, Frank January 2001 (has links)
This thesis deals with gradience in grammar, i.e., with the fact that some linguistic structures are not fully acceptable or unacceptable, but receive gradient linguistic judgments. The importance of gradient data for linguistic theory has been recognized at least since Chomsky's Logical Structure of Linguistic Theory. However, systematic empirical studies of gradience are largely absent, and none of the major theoretical frameworks is designed to account for gradient data. The present thesis addresses both questions. In the experimental part of the thesis (Chapters 3-5), we present a set of magnitude estimation experiments investigating gradience in grammar. The experiments deal with unaccusativity/unergativity, extraction, binding, word order, and gapping. They cover all major modules of syntactic theory, and draw on data from three languages (English, German, and Greek). In the theoretical part of thesis (Chapters 6 and 7), we use these experimental results to motivate a model of gradience in grammar. This model is a variant of Optimality Theory, and explains gradience in terms of the competition of ranked, violable linguistic constraints. The experimental studies in this thesis deliver two main results. First, they demonstrate that an experimental investigation of gradient phenomena can advance linguistic theory by uncovering acceptability distinctions that have gone unnoticed in the theoretical literature. An experimental approach can also settle data disputes that result from the informal data collection techniques typically employed in theoretical linguistics, which are not well-suited to investigate the behavior of gradient linguistic data. Second, we identify a set of general properties of gradient data that seem to be valid for a wide range of syntactic phenomena and across languages. (a) Linguistic constraints are ranked, in the sense that some constraint violations lead to a greater degree of unacceptability than others. (b) Constraint violations are cumulative, i.e., the degree of unacceptability of a structure increases with the number of constraints it violates. (c) Two constraint types can be distinguished experimentally: soft constraints lead to mild unacceptability when violated, while hard constraint violations trigger serious unacceptability. (d) The hard/soft distinction can be diagnosed by testing for effects from the linguistic context; context effects only occur for soft constraints; hard constraints are immune to contextual variation. (e) The soft/hard distinction is crosslinguistically stable. In the theoretical part of the thesis, we develop a model of gradient grammaticality that borrows central concepts from Optimality Theory, a competition-based grammatical framework. We propose an extension, Linear Optimality Theory, motivated by our experimental results on constraint ranking and the cumulativity of violations. The core assumption of our model is that the relative grammaticality of a structure is determined by the weighted sum of the violations it incurs. We show that the parameters of the model (the constraint weights), can be estimated using the least square method, a standard model fitting algorithm. Furthermore, we prove that standard Optimality Theory is a special case of Linear Optimality Theory. To test the validity of Linear Optimality Theory, we use it to model data from the experimental part of the thesis, including data on extraction, gapping, and word order. For all data sets, a high model fit is obtained and it is demonstrated that the model's predictions generalize to unseen data. On a theoretical level, our modeling results show that certain properties of gradient data (the hard/soft distinction, context effects, and crosslinguistic effects) do not have to be stipulated, but follow from core assumptions of Linear Optimality Theory.

Análise de magnitude e frequência espacial de movimentos de massa em Caraguatatuba-SP / Analysis of spatial magnitude and frequency of mass movement in Caraguatatuba-SP

Silva, Rodrigo Ferreira da 12 September 2013 (has links)
This work presents a model of spatial magnitude and frequency of the events of mass movement at the basin of Santo Antônio river, Guaxinduba river and Canivetal stream based on the methodology of Ahnert (1987) and De Ploey et al. (1991), which was adapted to the spacial analysis of the mass movement processes according to Colângelo & Cruz (1997 and 2000), Crozier & Glade (1997) and Colângelo (2005 and 2007). Cartography information was taken from the work of Cruz (1974), who, using aerial photos and fieldwork, mapped the landslides in 1967, their respective colluvium, and also the rubble caused by the debris flow. Extant aereal photos and satellite were also used. Based on these spatial data, and also on climatic, meteorological, geothecnical and morphologic data, the aim was to find out the model of spatial magnitud and frequency. For operationalizing the study, GIS tools were applied in the vetorization, compilation and modelling of data, and also spatial calculation.

The small-large divide: The development of infant abilities to discriminate small from large sets

Thesis advisor: Sara Cordes / Thesis advisor: Ellen Winner / Evidence suggests that humans and non-human animals have access to two distinct numerical representation systems: a precise "object-file" system used to visually track small quantities (<4) and an approximate, ratio-dependent analog magnitude system used to represent all natural numbers. Although many studies to date indicate that infants can discriminate exclusively small sets (e.g., 1 vs. 2, 2 vs. 3) or exclusively large sets (4 vs. 8, 8 vs. 16), a robust phenomenon exists whereby they fail to compare sets crossing this small-large boundary (2 vs. 4, 3 vs. 6) despite a seemingly favorable ratio of difference between the two set sizes. Despite these robust failures in infancy (up to 14 months), studies suggest that 3-year old children no longer encounter difficulties comparing small from large sets, yet little work has explored the development of this phenomenon between 14 months and 3 years of age. The present study investigates (1) when in development infants naturally overcome this inability to compare small vs. large sets, as well as (2) what factors may facilitate this ability: namely, perceptual variability and/or numerical language. Results from three cross-sectional studies indicate that infants begin to discriminate between small and large sets as early as 17 months of age. Furthermore, infants seemed to benefit from perceptual variability of the items in the set when making these discriminations. Moreover, although preliminary evidence suggests that a child's ability to verbally count may correlate with success on these discriminations, simply exposure to numerical language (in the form of adult modeling of labeling the cardinality and counting the set) does not affect performance. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2015. / Submitted to: Boston College.
