A Trajectory Towards Racism: Vraisemblance and Mascuilinity in T. C. Boyle's The Tortilla Curtain.

Racism is undeniably an interesting and important theme in The Tortilla Curtain by T. C. Boyle, but exploring how the novel establishes vraisemblance and motivates the progression of events reveals another significant theme. Relying on assumptions about gender and masculinity the narrative juxtaposes the different spheres of men and women, and as the narrative shifts its focus between the different characters of the novel, their respective domestic roles are scrutinised and compared. The narrative establishes and depends on the idea of a binary opposition between the sexes in order to highlight the marginal position of Delaney Mossbacher’s expressions of masculinity. Through locating Delaney’s performance of masculinity on the perimeters of the normative male role, his crisis of identity and sense of disorder are explained. Furthermore, by linking scenes where Delaney Mossbacher’s male role is threatened with scenes that depict his descent into racism the novel establishes the logical connection between Delaney’s disadvantaged position and his increasingly racist outburst of hatred and violence thus rendering them vraisemblable.

The master thesis, "The significance of male role models in adolescence: Contribution to male psychology" focuses on knowledges of social sciences of the concept of masculinity. The thesis emphasizes male role models and their significance for the process of male identity development in adolescence and emerging adulthood. The theoretical part is divided into four main chapters. The first chapter describes terms of gender, patriarchy and mens crisis and makes preliminary frame of the whole text. The second chapter presents biological, social and psychological aspects of masculinity. The third chapter pursues socialization process and its gender aspects in two following periods - adolescence and emerging adulthood. The forth, fundamental, chapter is dedicated to male rites of passage and male role models and their psychological significance. The empirical part describes the qualitative research procedure - the maping study including six adult males at the age of around thirty. Semi-structured interviews and subsequent analysis illustrate selected phenomenons related to masculinity, male role and male role models without a claim for any generalization.

TRADITIONAL MASCULINITY & ADVERTISING IMAGE APPROVAL

This project investigates the relationship between adherence to traditional masculinity and approval of selected advertising images. Because traditional masculinity includes characteristics supportive of aggression and dominance; I hypothesize that an increase in adherence to traditional masculinity will correlate with approval of the violence found in some print advertisements. Participants include 259 men who completed an anonymous, online, survey. Adherence to masculinity is measured using the Male Role Norm Inventory-Revised (MRNI-R) (Levant, et. al, 2007). Each picture is scored on a 5-point Likert Scale. As hypothesized, an increase in total MRNI-R score, is significantly correlated with an increase in the approval of the depiction of women, men and male/female interactions, with (r=.340, a=0.01) (r=.244, a=0.01) (r=.360, a=0.01), respectively. The results indicate that men reporting adherence to traditional masculinity also see violence in advertising positively. Future research should further examine marketing and its relationship with gender role acquisition, and violence in intimate partners.
