Future Work| Denver Metropolitan Area Jobs in a Globalizing Economy

Gabel, Sharon 04 December 2014 (has links)

In the past twenty years, globalization has had both observable and intangible impacts on business and labor markets at the local level, that are of critical importance to communities and the people who inhabit them. While impacts of global economic change on local labor markets have been anticipated, there is little insight in the research literature into the empirical dynamics of the interrelationship between global economic change and local labor markets. This study examined the impacts of globalization on local labor markets through three lenses: (1) quantitative analysis of employment change in the Denver Metropolitan Region local labor market, (2) quantitative comparison of six other metropolitan regional labor markets across different geographies, and (3) a qualitative analysis of explicit reports by participants in the Denver Metropolitan local labor market (people in business, consulting, the public sector, and education). The main hypothesis of this study is that, in metropolitan areas where the forces of global economic change are at work, two proxy measures for globalization, foreign direct investment (FDI) and export trade, have a statistically significant relationship to changes in industry employment in local labor markets. Quantitative analysis used multiple regression to identify correlation between industry employment and FDI and export trade. Results indicate that there is a correlation in selected industries where the geographic factors of location provided an explanatory basis for the results. Qualitative analysis revealed that respondents have cautious optimism regarding the economic promise of globalization and still acknowledge the challenges that globalization brings into focus for the region's business, education and government stakeholders. It also demonstrated the differences in perspectives of the respondents from different roles: business owner, enterprise employee, educator, and government official. The study concludes that the data support the hypothesis in select industries where there are geographic advantages, but they do not support the generalization of the hypothesis to all cases where FDI or international export trade affect industry employment. The study further finds that each of the metros examined have unique regional economic development entities that partner to attract FDI and encourage international export trade.

Employer/employee perceptions of performance appraisal and organizational outcomes| A case study approach

Jewoola, Olatubosun Emmanuel 31 January 2015 (has links)

There is a limited knowledge on the meanings, experiences, and perceptions of organizational members regarding performance appraisal and how the various experiences and perceptions are perceived to bear on organizational outcomes. With this qualitative study, I explored the experiences and perceptions of organizational personnel regarding performance appraisal systems and how these are perceived to bear on work outcomes. Using case study as research design, a detailed analysis of semi-structured interview involving organizational personnel (leaders, managers, and frontline employees) who lived in northeastern New York, and working in various disciplines and professions was conducted and recorded. NVivo software was used in generating the major thematic links and invariant constituents of the study. Results of the study revealed five significant themes: (a) essential descriptions of performance appraisal, (b) perceived rewards of performance appraisal, (c) differences and similarities of performance appraisal systems across different organizations, (d) perceived association of performance appraisal systems and work outcomes, and (e) recommended changes in performance appraisal systems. Employees who have positive experiences with the system associate performance appraisal with something equally beneficial to employees’ improvement and the operational performance of the organization. These employees reported experiences of motivation, loyalty, commitment, and productivity as they received their feedback. The study identified human resource development activities that could further achieve the real and genuine objectives of performance appraisal system.

An information system for assessing the likelihood of child labor in supplier locations leveraging Bayesian networks and text mining

Thöni, Andreas, Taudes, Alfred, Tjoa, A Min January 2018 (has links) (PDF)
This paper presents an expert system to monitor social sustainability compliance in supply chains. The system allows to continuously rank suppliers based on their risk of breaching sustainability standards on child labor. It uses a Bayesian network to determine the breach likelihood for each supplier location based on the integration of statistical data, audit results and public reports of child labor incidents. Publicly available statistics on the frequency of child labor in different regions and industries are used as contextual prior. The impact of audit results on the breach likelihood is calibrated based on expert input. Child labor incident observations are included automatically from publicly available news sources using text mining algorithms. The impact of an observation on the breach likelihood is determined by its relevance, credibility and frequency. Extensive tests reveal that the expert system correctly replicates the decisions of domain experts in the fields supply chain management, sustainability management, and risk management.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Camila Nogueira Felsky.pdf: 2070565 bytes, checksum: d3f8c763650a716c7a11a1785e00ce96 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-07-15 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This dissertation discusses labor management in the Family Health Strategy, from the meanings attributed by managers and workers to the policies and actions in this field, as well as their implications for workers in family health teams. This is an exploratory, descriptive, qualitative study, conducted in Linhares, Espírito Santo, related to municipal management in the period 2009-2012. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three managers of the municipal health office and focus groups were carried out with twenty-four workers of three family health teams (community health workers, nursing auxiliary, nurses and physician). Data analysis was performed using the content analysis technique proposed by Bardin (2011). From this analysis, seven categories emerged: knowledge about labor management policies; labor links status; employment relationship; plan of careers jobs and salaries and remuneration; work infrastructure; workload; education and training. It was observed limited knowledge about the labor management policies formulated by the Brazilian Ministry of Health, by both managers and workers. In general, there was little appreciation of initiatives aimed at improving working relations, conditions and processes of teams. The effects of this scarce investment were felt by the workers, who reported various dissatisfactions and insecurities. Thus, despite the increase in the formulation of policies for the field of the labor and education management in health for the Brazilian National Health System at the federal level, the research points to the need for studies that assist in the expansion of tools that promote higher visibility and knowledge of these policies, whereas in the city studied they are not known, which hinders their implementation. Furthermore, although the respondents recognize the importance of labor management for favoring a major role of those involved in the production of health, it turns out that this recognition is still more on the level of speech and is not reflected on the municipal political agenda / Esta dissertação discute a gestão do trabalho na Estratégia Saúde da Família, a partir dos sentidos atribuídos pelos gestores e trabalhadores às políticas e ações nesse campo, bem como de suas implicações para os trabalhadores das equipes de saúde da família.

However, some women do not refer to good experiences during their labor, even citing the pain of childbirth as the worst already felt, or far superior to what they expected. The aim of this study was to elaborate an extended systematic review of randomized clinical trials, updated to June 2017, which considers the Swiss ball as a non-pharmacological method of pain relief in labor, evaluate and list the heterogeneous points in the research methodologies of these clinical trials and to elaborate a protocol of randomized clinical trial considered "ideal" from the methodological point of view. The results of the six randomized controlled trials evaluated in the systematic review reinforce the possibility of this benefit but are limited by the poor quality of the available studies. This fact demonstrates the need to carry out new, methodologically adequate clinical trials that investigate the use of the ball in the first phase of labor. We conclude, therefore, that the use of non-invasive technologies, especially the Swiss ball, during labor should be implemented in all maternity wards, whether they are of normal risk or high risk, since it consists of an efficient, inexpensive and of easy handling and that offers to the parturients and their families a more humanized care.
