Designing high performance teams for projects : a study of 49 project teams in the UK construction industry

Teams have been presented as a panacea to complex and turbulent business environments, but there are few examples of genuinely high-performing teams. This study considers the utility of work design as a means of improving the performance of project teams and thereby resolving this paradox. Grounded in quantitative methodology, and supported by relevant qualitative data, this study has used a single case experiment to examine the effects of multiple work design variables on the climate and performance of 49 construction project management teams. The single case environment provided an opportunity to study a large number of real work groups, executing broadly similar tasks, while controlling for the effects of organisational culture on social and work behaviour. The results indicated that three levels of intervention - transformational leadership, team organisation and team performance orientation - were influential in either (a) directly influencing project team performance or (b) creating a team climate which was itself predictive of desired outcomes, specifically the moderation of project complexity and higher levels of productivity. In particular, the results showed that the `inspiring a shared vision' leader practice was influential in explaining the perceived satisfaction of customers with project team performance. This provides empirical evidence that visionary leadership is an important determinant of high performance in complex, fluid and uncertain work environments, such as construction project management. Although task orientation and shared vision emerged as reasonably strong performance norms in the sample, it is generally difficult isolating the referent group norm(s) which explain(s) the variation in the performance of project teams working in myriad social, temporal and task conditions. Rather than attempting to manage group behaviour in realtime, therefore, the results of this study suggest that a coherent and integrated package of work design interventions can leverage exceptional value from project teams by helping each team to develop unique performance and behavioural strategies.

The thesis on topic Event Management - solution of event project, field IT and logistics deals with the real project realized by company with particularly logistic branch, where the author is working. Whole thesis is about event, which was realized from November 2011 till March 2012. The aim of this thesis is to highlight problems linked to the project and event management and also to point out which methods are used in relation to the very realization of logistic forum. The reader of this thesis should be able to find out what the preparation, realization and implementation of the project contain and in which way might be used. Theoretical part clarify what the project and event management contains, which methodics are normally used and try to map different concepts of project and event management and what principles should be followed. Practical part deals with a real event, how gradually progressed in the implementation and project plan will be compared with the reality. This thesis is based on empiric method, especially on kind of empiric method -- project. For solving the main goal of thesis is used basically interpretation method - to show whole process of making this event. The conlusion and as a matter of fact hypothesis is to prove succesful realization based on theoretical principles of project and evetn management.

Study of standardization of planning process in a Project Management Office (PMO).

This thesis is about the standardization of the planning phase in a project management office (PMO). The purpose of the research is to find the way to standardize the planning phase in PMO. This purpose is motivated by the relevance of planning phase in projects. Planning is about to forecast, and the consequences of a bad forecasting can be critical for the developing of the project. The research question of the study is the following one:➢ How can the planning phase be standardized in a Project Management Office?To answer this question five interviews have been performed. The interviewees were senior project managers from different companies in Sweden. In order to keep the confidentiality, the names of the managers and the companies which they belong to are omitted. A literature review has been done to set up a theoretical framework and validate the results from the interviews. The study concludes that the only part in planning which can be easily standardized is the work breakdown structure. The results showed that standardization of planning phase as a whole is a big challenge for PMO and also that specialization helps in great measure the standardization of planning.

Research into Virtual Reality and the Benefits it may have on Construction Safety Education

<p>The purpose of this study is to determine if Virtual Reality safety training is more effective at teaching fall protection safety than traditional methods of instruction. A literature review of previous research was conducted and a theoretical framework and methodology was developed to test the two groups for this study. The research design is a difference-in-differences method comparing the pre-test and post-test scores of the participants of each group. There will be other small pieces of analysis that will be done to further understand the results of the data collection. The data will be analyzed and interpreted to better understand how the research question was answered in comparison to previous work and the theoretical framework. Finally, other questions that arose during the process will be addressed and future areas for more research will be defined.</p>

OPTIMAL CONTROL OF PROJECTS BASED ON KALMAN FILTER APPROACH FOR TRACKING & FORECASTING THE PROJECT PERFORMANCE

Traditional scheduling tools like Gantt Charts and CPM while useful in planning and execution of complex construction projects with multiple interdependent activities haven?t been of much help in implementing effective control systems for the same projects in case of deviation from their desired or assumed behavior. Further, in case of such deviations project managers in most cases make decisions which might be guided either by the prospects of short term gains or the intension of forcing the project to follow the original schedule or plan, inadvertently increasing the overall project cost. Many deterministic project control methods have been proposed by various researchers for calculating optimal resource schedules considering the time-cost as well as the time-cost-quality trade-off analysis. But the need is for a project control system which optimizes the effort or cost required for controlling the project by incorporating the stochastic dynamic nature of the construction-production process. Further, such a system must include a method for updating and revising the beliefs or models used for representing the dynamics of the project using the actual progress data of the project. This research develops such an optimal project control method using Kalman Filter forecasting method for updating and using the assumed project dynamics model for forecasting the Estimated Cost at Completion (EAC) and the Estimated Duration at Completion (EDAC) taking into account the inherent uncertainties in the project progress and progress measurements. The controller is then formulated for iteratively calculating the optimal resource allocation schedule that minimizes either the EAC or both the EAC and EDAC together using the evolutionary optimization algorithm Covariance Matrix Adaption Evolution Strategy (CMA-ES). The implementation of the developed framework is used with a hypothetical project and tested for its robustness in updating the assumed initial project dynamics model and yielding the optimal control policy considering some hypothetical cases of uncertainties in the project progress and progress measurements. Based on the tests and demonstrations firstly it is concluded that a project dynamics model based on the project Gantt chart for spatial interdependencies of sub-tasks with triangular progress rates is a good representation of a typical construction project; and secondly, it is shown that the use of CMA-ES in conjunction with the Kalman Filter estimation and forecasting method provides a robust framework that can be implemented for any kind of complex construction process for yielding the optimal control policies.

Theoretical part characterizes project from a perspective of project life cycle, staffing on project and project risks. Next it describes particular organizational levels of Project Management Office and activities that could be done by Project Management Office. Last but not least it provides overlook of maturity of project management in the Czech Republic. Practical part analysis on example of financial company the processes taking place in corresponding phases of a project. Next the processes of change management, risk management, project deliverables, quality assurance, reporting and budgeting are analyzed. At the end of this work the processes are evaluated and the steps for improvement are formulated.

This Thesis is beneficial to its readers for the processing of international standard entitled Portfolio Management. This standard has never been previously treated at the University of Economics in Prague. The Thesis is thanks to processing of other expert information sources full of new, timely and quality information about this theme that is compatible with international standards. In addition to the theory the reader is enriched by a practical demonstration of application portfolio management at Komercni banka, a.s., one of the leading banking institutions in the Czech Republic The contribution of the Thesis for Komercni banka, a.s., specifically for the Business Intelligence department, consists in the identification of constraints in the process (sub) portfolio management of BI projects with a proposal of their optimization.

The objective of this diploma thesis is to design a proposal for managing projects in small and mid-sized companies that will be part of reference Model of Business Informatics MBI. MBI is a reference model for business IT, which is being developed by Department of Information Technologies at the University of Economics in Prague. MBI contains best practices in combination with theoretical background. The proposal includes prepared document templates ready to use in project management. This thesis also compares well-known and most widely used project management standards. The theoretical part is focused on the most widely used project management standards and methodologies. First chapter compares PMBOK, ICB and PRINCE2. This chapter is focused on the most important characteristics, used approaches and differences of these standards. Next chapter is closely focused on PRINCE2 described in terms of defined processes. In the practical part of this diploma thesis is a proposal for managing projects in small and mid-sized companies. The proposal takes the form of tables that matches the MBI model structure. This proposal is available on MBI website and is ready to use in practice. The theoretical part of this thesis is mainly based on the official publications and information from official websites of companies focused on project management. Practical part of this thesis is based on theoretical and practical experience. The usability of the results is evaluated in conclusion.
