Stress Management Training, Gender, Level of Stress, and Coping in Police Officers

Salain, Samantha Leigh Fields 01 January 2017 (has links)
Stress has lasting and sometimes fatal effects on the law enforcement community, which can compromise the well-being of police officers. To date, there is little research on factors that influence the level of stress in police officers. The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to investigate the relationship of gender, used coping mechanisms, and levels of organizational and operational stress among police officers who have and have not received stress management training. Bandura's social learning theory and Lazarus and Folkman's theory of cognitive appraisal provided the theoretical foundation. Cross-sectional survey data from a convenience sample of 134 male and female police officers were collected using the Brief Cope, the Operational and Organizational Police Stress Questionnaire, and a demographic survey. An independent samples t test and multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to test the hypotheses. According to study findings, officers who received stress management training demonstrated a higher use of adaptive coping mechanisms compared to those who did not receive training. In addition, gender and use of maladaptive coping predicted level of stress among officers. Evidently, receiving stress management training was useful for these participating police officers, and these findings suggest that the training may have positive demonstrable effects for other police officers. This study promotes positive social change by increasing knowledge and awareness of the value that stress management has in reducing level of stress and use of maladaptive coping in police officers, thus empowering the psychological needs of officers while endorsing public safety at the individual and societal level.

Assessing some aspects of managerial ethics within the South African business environment / Lukas Daniël Barnard

Barnard, Lukas Daniël, 1983- January 2012 (has links)
Since the early 2000s there has been a growing awareness of the indivisible link between ethical conduct on the one hand and business practice on the other. A spate of corporate scandals, due to poor ethical management and deficient ethical decision making, has increased public scrutiny of organisational conduct. This indivisible link between ethics and management warranted investigation; consequently some aspects of managerial ethics in the corporate environment of South Africa were analysed and the role of training in sensitising managers to ethical decision making was examined. Both a comprehensive literature review and an empirical investigation were conducted in order to satisfy the objectives of the research study. The literature review provided insight into some of major concepts relating to managerial ethics, while also providing an overview of the global and South African ethical situation. It also revealed some pertinent current issues regarding managerial ethics training and ethics training in general. The empirical investigation was based on a quantitative research approach and was conducted through a questionnaire. A diverse group of managers who are all furthering their managerial studies at an accredited South African business school formed the study population. A total of 108 respondents completed the questionnaires, which were then statistically analysed, by the North-West University’s (NWU) Statistical Consultation Services. Both the literature review and the empirical investigation indicated a growing perception that ethics and ethical leadership is deteriorating, while the prevalence of ethical conduct breach has been on the increase. On a positive note there are strong indications that a favourable climate is being created in South African organisations, by the establishment of formal ethical codes and the development of business values. However, further investigation revealed that while formal policies and codes are in place, the implementation of these policies is lacking. A lack of understanding of the importance of ethical management was also identified, along with indications that current managerial training does not provide managers with the practical tools for real world application of ethical codes. Recommendations regarding possible action steps to start bridging the gap between the stated business values and ethics codes and the physical implementation of these guidelines are made, along with suggestions for further research. / Thesis (MBA)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2013

Saberes e fazeres da gestão democrática: as apropriações dos conhecimentos do Progestão e as práticas da administração escolar / Public management through: distance training program

Valéria Figueiredo Argolo 30 September 2010 (has links)
This research sought to identify how managers who have completed specialization in Public Management through Distance Training Program for School Managers (PROGESTÃO) in Rio de Janeiro, are using the concepts worked in the pipeline, such as the process of democratization and socialization and democratic management. Using structured interviews were analyzed speeches made by respondents: directors, coordinator and tutor in order to assess the repercussions of PROGESTÃO and if the principles of democratic management are actually being implemented. We address the issue of democratic management in the current educational context and the conceptual and policy for the training of school managers PROGESTÃO. We consider that the processes of training managers need to be consolidated so that finally the democratic attitude can be adopted in the work done within the school. We also believe that other studies that deal with the issues addressed in this thesis must be performed, as there are conflicts (that are not always admitted) between administrative conservatism with corporate nature and a democratic management among managers.

Effectiveness of the Mandt System Aggression Management Training in an Inpatient Behavioral Health Program

McDade, Yolanda 06 May 2017 (has links)
Research is lacking on the efficacy of aggression management training programs based on clinical outcomes. This study examined the efficacy of an aggression management training on managing aggression and violent behavior at East Mississippi State Hospital (EMSH), an inpatient behavioral health program. This training, The Mandt System, replaced a previous training, Techniques for the Management of Aggressive Behavior (TMAB), which was considered to be non-replicable outside state facilities in Mississippi. This study should not be seen as a comparative study between The Mandt System and TMAB, but rather as an investigation into the effects of implementing The Mandt System as a new training at EMSH. The efficacy of The Mandt System was examined through 4 key variables: patient to patient incidents, patient to staff incidents, seclusion episodes and restraint episodes. Over a 6 year period, incidents of aggression and violence were identified by extracting archival data from incident reports. Archival data were examined 3 years prior to the implementation of The Mandt System and 3 years after the implementation of the training. The researcher found that the rate of patient to patient incidents decreased as well as the rate of seclusions and restraint episodes following implementation of The Mandt System training. The rate of the patient to staff incidents did not decrease. Effective training on the management of aggression is essential in decreasing aggressive and violent behavior. Nevertheless, these findings are difficult to validate due to a scarcity of research that is supported by evidence from randomized controlled studies. A review of the literature revealed that researchers do not give precedence to the study of aggression management training when dealing with aggressive behavior in inpatient behavior health settings. This is possibly due to the findings of Hage, Van Meijel, Fluttert, and Berden (2009) that research on the effectiveness of intervention strategies requires a more complicated study design and involves many methodological and logistical challenges. Although the results of this study suggest that this training can have a positive effect on aggression and violence, much more needs to be done to evaluate the effectiveness of aggression management training programs.
