Thank you. / An in-depth review of relevant international literature in the field of death investigation was performed with the intention of assessing the complex ethical, legal, and medical considerations unique to the investigation of self-inflicted fatalities. The overall goal was to present a set of guidelines to be used in the development of more objective criteria for the determination of suicidal manner of death and to highlight the inherent difficulties in suicide investigation, which can often lead to misclassification at autopsy. Findings showed that suicides rates seem to fluctuate inversely to the number of deaths deemed as being of undetermined manner; this strongly suggests that many suicides are going unreported. There were also a significant number of case studies found which indicated conflicting scientific findings regarding gross anatomical or toxicological findings of suicide victims, and a number of others which showed cases of suicide which were intentionally disguised as either homicidal, natural, or accidental death and vice versa. The most commonly agreed upon signs of each method of suicide are summarized and suggestions for a consistent methodology for both scene investigation and autopsy are given. / 2031-01-01

Jean-Michel Defaye composed Á La Maniére de Debussy in 2001 as part of a series of trombone solos written to emulate the compositional styles of significant predecessors. This study compares Á La Maniére de Debussy to the harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic practices of Claude Debussy (1862–1918), an innovative French composer and recognized figure of musical Impressionism. At present, there is limited scholarship on Defaye’s Á La Maniére de Debussy and its compositionally imitative nature. The first section of this document presents a survey of historical information, current literature, and methods of examination. The second section provides biographical information on composers Jean-Michel Defaye and Claude Debussy. The third section exhibits a compositional comparison of Á La Maniére de Debussy to Debussy’s use of harmony, melody, and rhythm. The final section draws a conclusion to the piece’s importance to the trombone solo repertoire and includes an interview with French trombonist Jacques Mauger who collaborated with Defaye on Á La Maniére de Debussy. Although this document is not a performance guide, an informed performance of Á La Maniére de Debussy requires a trombonist to understand Debussy’s unique treatment of harmony, melody, and rhythm.

Esse trabalho é um estudo da expressão maneira antiga empregada para classificar um gênero de pintura na segunda metade do século XVIII. É um trabalho sobre o vocabulário em uso nessa época para falar da arte e da sua apreciação. É também um trabalho de tradução de textos críticos, de definições da Encyclopédie, de dicionários especializados nos termos artísticos, de artigos de jornais e de trechos dos livretes dos Salons. Para discutir a ideia da pintura no tempo das Luzes, esse estudo se organiza em volta da reflexão do filósofo Denis Diderot sobre a arte e a maneira e o modelo em particular. Ao que diz respeito aos pintores, são as obras de Joseph Marie Vien e do seu aluno Jacques Louis David os objetos desse estudo sobre a maneira antiga. / This is a study of the antic manner expression used to classify a genre of paintings in France during the second half of the XVIII century. It is a study of the vocabulary in vogue at the time in discussions of art and the appreciation of art. It is also a study of the translation of critical texts, Encyclopédie definitions, specialized dictionaries on artistic terms, journalistic articles, and excerpts from Salon pamphlets. To discuss painting during the Enlightenment, this study focuses on the reflections of the philosopher Denis Diderot on art, form, and subject in particular. In respect to painters, the works of Joseph Marie Vien and his pupil Jacques Louis David are the main object of this study on the antic manner of painting.

Ruwe manier describes loose painting, characterized by visible brushwork that is casually or even crudely exposed. Although Rembrandt did not invent ruwe manier, his late style is practically synonymous with highly developed surface texture. The goal of this study is to help develop historical context for understanding Rembrandt’s characteristic approach to thick paint, as well as to attempt to locate what is so distinctive about Rembrandt’s expressive brushwork. The ruwe manier is particularly prominent in Rembrandt’s 1658 Self-Portrait housed in the Frick Collection in New York City. The Frick Self-Portrait thus operates as a case study and as a point of departure from which to discuss notions of the rough manner in this period. Through detailed formal analysis and primary texts, I propose how the emotional impact of impasto, as understood in Rembrandt’s time, might have served as motivation for Rembrandt’s painting approach in his later years. In the last section, I apply these discussions about Rembrandt’s ruwe manier to a current neuroscience research about visual and tactile perception. This final, exploratory chapter is more of an inquiry of neuroaesthetic methodology than of Rembrandt’s painting. I ultimately suggest that the assertion of self is manifest not only in the Rembrandt’s presentation of himself as a subject, but also as it is imbued on a conscious and fundamental level—in the very tactility of the paint itself. / text

Owing to the ever increasing information deluge, it is becoming increasingly difficult to locate relevant information through traditional term-based search methods. Event–based text mining provides a more promising approach, as it also takes into account the semantic relationships between terms. Typical event representations only focus on identifying the type of the event, its par-ticipants and their types. However, additional information, which is essential for correct interpretation of the event, is often present in the text. This includes infor-mation about the polarity, certainty level, intensity/rate/frequency, type and source of the knowledge conveyed by the event. We refer to this additional information as meta-knowledge. This thesis focusses on our work involving the enrichment of events with meta-knowledge information. In this thesis we: • describe the annotation scheme designed specifically to capture meta-knowledge information at the event level• report on the corpora that have been enriched through deployment of the meta-knowledge annotation scheme• describe the work on automated identification of meta-knowledge including: - a broad-ranging study on analysis and identification of polarity of bio-events using three different bio-event corpora - a detailed study on analysis and identification of knowledge source in bio-events found in abstracts as well as in full papers - a first study on analysis and identification of bio-event manner• describe the initial work on a new approach to discourse analysis based on me-ta-knowledge annotations at the event level

Thesis covers problems related to the reporting of the inventories. Problematic areas are sold according to the effective Czech accounting legislation and based on the international accounting standards IFRS and US GAAP. Theoretical findings are compared with the accounting policies of the Czech production company. Attention is paid primarily on the influence of the estimation and the manner of the reporting of the inventories upon the financial statements.
