Polyphonic music in thirteenth-century France : aspects of sources and distribution

Everist, Mark January 1985 (has links)
The investigation of primary sources of thirteenth-century polyphony has been closely related to questions of the date and provenance of the surviving manuscripts. Previous studies have taken a single book and attempted to place it chronologically and topographically within the history of music of the thirteenth century. This thesis considers surviving material related to thirteenth-century polyphony and evaluates the patterns of production found there. These considerations are supported by a review of chronology in the period. Using techniques derived from the fields of paleography, codicology, and art history, the manuscripts are loosely divided into Parisian and non-Parisian, and the contrasting types of book-production are placed in the context of the contemporary production of other types of book. At the most basic level, Parisian books betray a professional and organised system of production which relates to the generation of books which preceded the establishment of the pecia system whilst provincial manuscripts seem to suggest a more informal and ad-hoc construction and circulation. The data obtained from such source-critical inquiry are then used to ask questions concerning the distribution of genre with the discussion focused primarily on the motet and its various sub-species: bilingual motet, rondeau-motet, etc. Conclusions as regards distribution of the music suggest a distinction between Parisian practices and provincial, particularly Artesian, musical cultures. It is argued that concordance-bases and origins of surviving sources suggest the exclusive cultivation of some genres in Paris, and, of others, in Artois or the provinces.

The textual transmission of Cicero's Epistulae ad Brutum, ad Quintum fratrem, and ad Atticum

Rota, Gabriele January 2018 (has links)
My doctorate is a study of the manuscript transmission of Cicero’s Epistulae ad Atticum: a twenty-book corpus comprising one book Ad M. Brutum, three books Ad Quintum fratrem, sixteen books Ad Atticum and a pseudo-Ciceronian Epistula ad Octauianum. I have made a complete reinspection and partial recollation of the eighty-odd fully extant manuscripts, and reconstructed a new stemma codicum that may be used for both historical and editorial purposes. My thesis consists of four chapters, following the transmission of the corpus of Ad Atticum from the Middle Ages down to the Renaissance and the beginning of printing. In Chapter 1 I discuss the top of the stemma: Petrarch’s (1304–74) rediscovery of these letters in the Chapter Library of Verona in 1345, and the beginning of their dissemination in fifteenth-century Italy, thanks to the Florentine Chancellor Coluccio Salutati (1331–1406) and two humanists of his circle: Niccolò Niccoli (1364–1437) and Leonardo Bruni (c. 1370–1444). Editors of Cicero’s letters believe that the top of the stemma is bipartite, and that bipartition reflects separate strands of mediaeval transmission: I argue against their reconstruction and put forward a new pluripartite stemma. In Chapter 1 I also consider manuscripts independent of the Verona archetype: these witnesses survive only in tiny fragments and scattered readings cited by sixteenth-century critics. In Chapter 2 I study the northern Italian progeny of the Veronese archetype: here too I have significantly improved on the editors’ work, thanks to collation of a larger number of independent manuscripts and a more articulated understanding of the intricate dynamics of contamination affecting this branch. In Chapters 3 and 4 I investigate the Florentine transmission of the corpus of Ad Atticum. In Chapter 3 I study the closer descendants of the copy of the Verona archetype that in 1393 came from Milan to Florence at Salutati’s instigation. In Chapter 4 I focus on the thirty-odd descendants of the manuscript that in 1408 the humanist and Papal secretary Poggio Bracciolini (1380–1459) copied for Cosimo de’ Medici (1389–1464). The comprehensive stemmata that I put forward in Chapters 3 and 4 are completely new, since hitherto there has been no systematic attempt to map the genealogy of Salutati’s manuscript.

Illuminating the scrolls: illustrating Australian nature in response to the biblical texts of Lamentations, Ruth, Ecclesiastes and Esther

Pfennigwerth, Fiona Mary January 2008 (has links)
Research Doctorate - Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) / How may ancient Hebrew texts be presented to a contemporary audience, remaining faithful to the original and at the same time relevant yet timeless? I am painting four series of watercolours, each focussing on a particular Australian habitat. These artworks form decorative borders to the four biblical texts of Lamentations, Ruth, Ecclesiastes and Esther, four of the Jewish Scrolls, and act as visual metaphors of underlying themes and indicators of structure and literary devices. My research is into the texts themselves, reading and responding to them; into natural subjects that express my response; and into the art-making process from which the final artworks are created. The end product of my research is an exhibition of these watercolour works and an A4-sized book combining the complete printed text of the Scrolls in the English Standard Version (ESV) as I have formatted it, with my illustrations as border designs. My aim is that through the manuscripts’ overall design, I honour the authors’ literary artistry, including symmetry, acrostic and reversal. Through my choice of subjects for each illustration, I aim to suggest themes in the adjoining text.
