Avena Sativa - En hyperackumulator? : En studie av havres kadmiumupptag / Avena Sativa - A Hyper Accumulator?

Eckert, Andreas, Fransson, Cecilia January 2009 (has links)

The aim of our research was to investigate if oat is capable of extracting cadmium to such extent that it is usable in decontaminating polluted soils. We grew oat in a hydroponic culture during 28 days in a controlled environment and a total of 30 plants were used. The nutrient solutions were contaminated with cadmium of ten different concentrations after seven days. After harvesting the plants, the roots were separated from the shoots, placed in separate containers and then turned to ashes. The cadmium content was measured three times per sample in an atomic absorption spectrometer.

Our results indicate that the ability of oat to extract cadmium from a solution is linearly dependent of the cadmium concentration of the solution. We also noted that the resistivity to cadmium of oat is limited. When the concentration of accessible cadmium ions exceeded 0,06mM, a significant difference of the shoot growth appeared. The results we obtained from shoots and roots show cadmium amounts much higher in the roots than the shoots. Despite this difference there were sufficient amounts of cadmium in the shoots to call oat a hyper accumulator. This means that oat fulfills one of the criteria of a phytoextractor.

Förorenad mark 20 år efter åtgärd : Undersökning av ytvattenkemi i Bersbo gruvområde / Polluted Soil 20 Years After Restoration : Examination of Water Chemistry in the Bersbo Mining Area

Larsson, Magnus, Toftgård, Martha January 2008 (has links)

Linnersund, Malin, Litzleäng, Elin January 2002 (has links)

/
This graduate work discusses the subject healthy buildings. We have studied concrete floor and floor materials to find out their influence on the indoor environment. The reason that this graduate work was written is that NCC in corporation with Stångåstaden AB are interested in materials influence on the indoor environment. The study has been accomplished in Linköping at Kv. Irrbloset, which is built as a healthy building for students.

Our graduate work contains two different studies, a study about concrete and a study about concrete floor’s material. We have done a thorough literature study to enlarge our comprehension about the subject.

The study that discusses concrete has been accomplished by interviews and educational visits. To speed up the time of desiccation in concrete structures a use of vibration free concrete and fast drying concrete are suitable choices to get a healthy indoor environment.

Chosen floor materials at Kv. Irrblosset have been studied from an environmental, quality and health kind of view. We have recommended alternative materials that can be used to increase the quality of the indoor environment. Floor materials that are especially suitable for a healthy indoor environment are wooden floors with no glue and linoleum.

After several interviews we figured out that quality work is very important to reach a healthy indoor environment. Quality work must be a part of the whole company and a definition of quality can be a permanent aspiration to become better.

Religious healing in the progressive era : literary responses to Christian Science

Squires, Laura Ashley 10 July 2012 (has links)
This project examines the impact of Christian Science on American culture through the interventions of three major literary figures—Mark Twain, Willa Cather, and Theodore Dreiser—in the major debates that surrounded the movement. I argue that both Christian Science itself and the backlash against it were responses to the shifting conditions of modern life, that Christian Science and public discourse on it laid bare distinctly modern tensions and anxieties about changes in U.S. culture. Recent scholarship has pointed to the durability of the secularization thesis in the study of American literature despite the easily discernible impact of religion on American culture more broadly throughout the history of the U.S. This critical perspective has been particularly difficult to dismantle in the study of post-Civil War American literature. While it is true that Protestant Christianity lost some of its dominance in the late nineteenth century, this period also saw the rise of various influential heterodox religious groups, including Christian Science. This dissertation will make sense of why and how Christian Science captured the imaginations of so many Americans, including some of the greatest storytellers of the day. Christian Science was not the story of how a group of deluded fanatics attempted to turn back the tide of modernity. Instead, Christian Science was a product of modernity that provided a unique and, in its particular context, scientifically plausible response to the problem of human suffering. Furthermore, the controversies that surrounded Christian Science crystallized anxieties about the fate of individual autonomy in the modern U.S., the exercise of therapeutic and religious freedom, the concentration of individual wealth and power among a privileged few, the extension of American power abroad, and sexuality. Each chapter will examine a narrative or set of narratives that demonstrate how the Christian Science debates heightened and spoke to those concerns. / text

Estimation of population sizes for the Jollyville Plateau Salamander (Eurycea tonkawae) using a mark-recapture method

Luo, Liming, 1976- 29 November 2010 (has links)
The Jollyville Plateau Salamander (JPS), Eurycea tonkawae, is a species of salamander endemic to Texas, the United States. It is a candidate for protection under the Endangered Species Act. This report assesses the JPS population abundances at Lanier Spring, Long Hollow Creek at Wheless Spring, and Ribelin Spring in Austin using a mark-recapture method. The maximum likelihood estimation method was used to obtain the population size estimates under two models, the M₀ model and the M[subscript t] model. The M₀ model assumes that every animal has the same capture probability in the population for each sampling period while the M[subscript t] model allows capture probabilities to vary by time. Simulations were performed by using an MCMC algorithm based on the M₀ model. Between 2007 and 2009, the population size estimates for JPS (>16mm snout-vent length, (SVL)) at Lanier Spring varied between 86 and 554 under the M₀ model, between 80 and 549 under the M[subscript t] model, and between 76 and 564 using MCMC simulations. During 2007 monitoring periods, the population size estimates for JPS (>16mm SVL) at Ribelin Spring varied between 105 and 236 under the M₀ model, between 104 and 196 under the M[subscript t] model, and between 105 and 265 using MCMC simulations. During 2007 and 2008 monitoring periods, the population size estimates for JPS (>16mm SVL) at Wheless Spring varied between 368 and 1087 under the M₀ model, between 339 and 1075 under the M[subscript t] model, and between 411 and 1098 using MCMC simulations. Different estimation methods yielded consistent estimates. No clear population trends were detected due to the big fluctuations in estimates in this study. / text

Past, present and future status of the endangered American burying beetle (Nicrophorus americanus) in Texas

Bauer, Kendra Kim 04 January 2011 (has links)
Nicrophorus americanus is a federally endangered species whose range has decreased dramatically since the 1920s. It is a nocturnal species that is only active from May to September when temperatures reach at least 15.5°C for three nights in a row. It once ranged throughout North America, from Maine and the southern parts of Canada, west to South Dakota and south to Texas. The historic Texas population consists of four Texas specimens from the 1880s residing at the Philadelphia Academy of Science Invertebrate Collection. Since then, there were no confirmed specimens in Texas, until 2003 when a single individual was found in Lamar County, Texas. The population discovered in Lamar County has been on a steady decrease from 2005, 223 individuals captured, until 2008 only 8 individuals captured. Since 2008, no individuals have been captured in Texas, despite intense surveys. It is possible that the Texas population is a sink population with the Oklahoma population to its north, acting as the source. Genetic analysis of the Texas and Oklahoma populations would help to answer this question and analysis of the entire population may answer questions to why the species declined leaving only the peripheral populations. The specific habitat variables that caused the population to re-colonize and go extinct in Texas are unclear, but when determined could play a critical role in managing the population. / text
