Facade Design for Material Reclamation Through Digital Fabrication

The pursuit of reducing waste and carbon emissions in the building industry is a challenge which is collective, prescient, and an opportunity for explorations of new material practices and fabrication methods. This thesis seeks to show how digital fabrication can serve as a tool in material reclamation and reuse in architecture. Utilizing the design of a pharmaceutical headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts as a vessel for investigation, both the challenges and potentials of such a process are evaluated. This proposal includes a process by which material reclamation drives design decisions in order to show that when architects consider material lifecycles and design for a process, rather than just a product, new possibilities can be realized for a building and its implications. By reusing existing metal cladding in the pharmaceutical building's solar veil, not only is waste reduced, but a narrative is conveyed about possible futures. Through creative material practices and digital tools, architects have the opportunity to create a future that is locally grounded, resource efficient, and less wasteful while meeting the needs of an expanding global population. This thesis raises a number of questions around material use in buildings, fabrication methods, facade design, and the balance between performance and embodied traits. The journey of designing for material systems is documented here in order to show the possibilities for change in the industry towards more sustainable material practices. / Master of Architecture / Around the world, buildings are one of the top producers of carbon emissions and waste. The world’s population alongside the general consumption and use of natural resources hasgrown immensely during the past decade. The construction sector is today one of the industriesthat has the highest impact on the environment. Therefore, the current linear economy has to bemoved towards a circular economy which aims for material- and resource efficiency. The concept of reverse logistics for reuse of construction material and the need for collaboration hasbeen identified as key areas for transitioning to a circular economy and thus has a decisive rolein reducing the construction waste. However, due to the construction industry beingfragmented, a lack of collaboration amongst real estate developers and other market actors hasbeen identified as a barrier for successfully implementing the reuse of construction materials.Furthermore, the real estate developer is seen as a key actor to utilise the potential of the reuseof construction materials by creating incentives and collaborations with other actors involved. The aim of this paper was therefore to investigate different actor’s perspectives in the realestate- and construction sector regarding reuse of construction materials and what the keybarriers and incentives are for them to implement it. Furthermore, by gaining an understandingof each actor's perspective the aim was to create a framework model for how a real estatedeveloper can achieve a strategic collaboration with different actors to make the process ofreusing construction materials in tenant adaptation projects more efficient. This was achievedby interviewing key actors within the real estate- and construction industry in order to get anoverall perspective on their views. Furthermore, a survey was conducted to obtain anunderstanding of the tenants view on having reused construction materials in their facilities. The results indicated that the main barriers were; a lack of incentives, lack of logistics &recovery facilities, an established procedure for quality assuring the material & warranty issuesas well as the tenants’ perception of it. Furthermore, the results show that the real estatedeveloper can create different types of incentives for the tenants and involved actors in order tofacilitate the implementation of material reuse and an established collaboration. Lastly, aframework model was presented to demonstrate how a real estate developer can collaboratewith different actors in order to get a deeper understanding of the dynamics of a potentialcollaboration. / Världens befolkning har i samband med den generella konsumtionen samt vår användning av naturresurserna ökat avsevärt det senaste decenniet. Bygg- och fastighetssektorn är idag en av de industrier som har störst påverkan på vår miljö. Därav behövs en skiftning från den linjäraekonomin till en cirkulär ekonomi som grundar sig i material- och resurseffektivisering.Konceptet omvänd logistik för ett ökat återbruk av byggmaterial och behovet av samarbete har identifierats som viktiga verktyg för skiftet mot en cirkulär ekonomi och därmed en minimeringav byggavfall. Då byggbranschen idag är fragmenterad har bristen på samarbete mellan fastighetsägare och andra aktörer identifierats som en utmaning för att implementera återbrukav byggmaterial med framgång. Vidare ses fastighetsägare som en huvudaktör som kan utnyttja potentialen som finns kring återbruk av byggmaterial genom att skapa incitament ochsamarbeten med andra involverade aktörer. Därför var syftet med denna rapport att utreda olika aktörers perspektiv på återbruk avbyggmaterial inom bygg- och fastighetssektorn samt vad de främsta barriärer och incitament ärför att de ska implementera det. Vidare, genom att få en förståelse för samtliga aktörersperspektiv var målet att skapa en modell för hur fastighetsägarna kan uppnå ett strategiskt samarbete med olika aktörer för att effektivisera processen av återbruk av byggmaterial vid enhyresgästsanpassning. Detta uppnåddes genom att intervjua huvudaktörer inom bygg- och fastighetssektorn. Vidare gjordes en enkät för att erhålla en förståelse för hyresgästerna syn på att ha återbrukatbyggmaterial i deras lokaler.

A New Paradigm : A Designer’s Quest for Material Reuse and Upcycling

In a time of growing consciousness around sustainability and an early paradigm shift when it comes to circular systems for furniture and interiors, as an aspiring designer, I need and must adapt accordingly within my field and creative practice. In this project, I have worked with the immense material waste that is going on, especially focusing on furniture and interiors, within the public and private sectors as well as in office environments, where this is a big issue. Guided by the United Nations Global Goal No 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production, I have experimented with, to me, new ideas for systems that deal with the upcycling and repurposing of “old” and/or discarded pieces of furniture and the material they are made from. To see what I can make of it to prolong the lifecycle and give the material a new purpose, function, and value. In my process I have acted both as an interior architect and a furniture designer but also as a sculptor and craftsman since the predetermined “waste” material I have worked with demanded a reversed design process than what a “normal” one would look like for a commercial project.    The result is a series of new furniture designed and made from waste material, revisioned by me through a mix of art and design, to see how I as a designer of furniture and interiors can develop and find my path in this and to help formulate the new design paradigm and aesthetics for future circular and sustainable furniture and interior solutions that is underway.

Implementation of a Value-Based Pricing Model for a Customised Metal Recycling Solution / Implementering av en Värdebaserad Prismodell för en Anpassad Metallåtervinningslösning

As the stainless steel industry continues to grow, so does the environmental impacts generated by the various production processes. Such impacts not only affect the environment but pose great health concerns for humans and other living things. Therefore, it is necessary for all stakeholders to continuously improve their sustainability work. Metal recovery is one of the ways this can be done. There exists different organisations within the stainless steel industry, all of which are likely to benefit from metal recycling solutions. However, it is not obvious what models for value capture are most appropriate regarding such new technology. Adopting an appropriate value capture model is crucial for any organisation offering a service or a product. It is what ultimately determines an organisation’s revenues, profits as well as the amounts reinvested in the organisation’s growth for its long-term survival. By considering a case company offering a metal recycling solution, this study investigates how such a company may best leverage the value created by their technology. This is achieved by implementing a qualitative approach consisting of an extant literature review, accompanied by empirical findings through interviews with potential customers. Different factors affecting the formulation of an offering, as well as a value-based pricing model for that offering, are analysed. The study proposes a framework for how organisations can efficiently and effectively implement a value-based pricing model for a certain offering. This framework is put into context in regard to the empirical findings. Moreover, the empirical study identifies the potential customers’ perceived value as a result of the metal recycling solution as; opportunities for material reuse and circular economy in production, enhanced waste management, improved brand and the corporate image, and increased operational efficiency. Lastly, identified key determining factors of value realisation from the customer perspective were; payback time, operational aspects, organisational and operational size, type of offering of a metal recycling solution, regulations and public process surveillance and views on pricing strategy. / Medans den rostfria stålindustrin fortsätter att växa ökar även miljöpåverkan från dess olika produktionsprocesser. Sådana effekter påverkar inte bara miljön, utan utgör även stora hälsoproblem för människor och andra levande organismer. För att minska dess miljöpåverkan är det nödvändigt för alla parter inom industrin att kontinuerligt förbättra sitt hållbarhetsarbete. Ett alternativt sätt detta kan göras på är med hjälp av metallåtervinning. Det finns olika företag och organisationer inom den rostfria stålindustrin, som alla troligen kan dra nytta av metallåtervinningslösningar. Det är dock inte uppenbart vilka modeller för värdefångst som är mest lämpliga för en sådan teknik, vilket är problematiskt för de som erbjuder en sådan lösning. Att bestämma en lämplig modell för värdefångst är dock avgörande för alla organisationer som erbjuder en tjänst eller produkt. Det är det som i slutändan avgör en organisations intäkter, vinster samt de belopp som återinvesteras i organisationens tillväxt för dess långvariga överlevnad. Genom att studera ett företag som erbjuder en metallåtervinningslösning har denna studie som syfte att undersöka hur ett sådant företag bäst kan utnyttja det värde som skapas av deras teknik. Detta uppnås genom att implementera en kvalitativ metod som består av en litteraturstudie, följt av empiriska resultat från intervjuer med potentiella kunder till företaget. Olika faktorer som påverkar formuleringen av en produkt/tjänst och en värdebaserad prissättningsmodell för den produkten/tjänsten analyseras. Detta arbete tar fram och föreslår ett ramverk för hur organisationer effektivt kan implementera en värdebaserad prissättningsmodell för ett visst erbjudande. Detta ramverk sätts sedan i sammanhang i samband med de empiriska resultaten. Den empiriska studien identifierar även de potentiella kundernas upplevda värde till följd av metallåtervinningslösningen som; möjligheter för materialanvändning och cirkulär ekonomi i produktionen, förbättrad avfallshantering, förbättrat varumärke och företagsimage och ökad operativ effektivitet. Slutligen identifierades viktiga avgörande faktorer för värdeförverkligande ur kundperspektivet som; återbetalningstid, operativa aspekter, organisatorisk och operativ storlek, typ av erbjudande av metallåtervinningslösning, regler och offentlig processövervakning och syn på prisstrategi.
