This phenomenological study explores the lived experiences of three music teachers who are invited to view themselves and their practices as “becoming” in the context of Maxine Greene’s philosophy of education. In communion with my own becoming as teacher and researcher, I explore the aspects of my participants’ musical and teaching identities over the course of their careers and in relation to their unique teaching contexts. Throughout this project, I explored qualities of resonance, striving, a sense of artistic “re-capturing,” wide-awakeness, social imagination, and courage. I came to understand that stories play an important role in shaping our perceptions of reality and awareness of the lived lives of the “other” as we strive together toward a more just society through artistic encounters in education.

The role and the experience of body is essential for the description of dance even in its aesthetical and philosophical interpretation. First of all, this diploma theses aims to map the field of aesthetics and philosophy of dance from wider historical perspective and consequently to find support in dance basic division and its connected experiences in practice of inner ecstatic immersion. Furthermore, the focus is also given to the type of experience that is subordinated to visual effect of dance. This foundation is further elaborated in second part of this thesis, which discusses dance experience in its aesthetic dimension through context of phenomenological philosophy in thinking of Maxine Sheets-Johnstone. This concept of dance reveals other important qualities in dance as an art. High-level language virtual machines (HLL VMs) have been playing a key role as a mechanism for implementing programming languages. Languages that run on these execution environments have many advantages over languages that are compiled to native code. These advantages have led HLL VMs to gain broad acceptance in both academy and industry. However, much of the research in this area has been devoted to boosting the performance of these execution environments. Few eorts have attempted to introduce features that automate or facilitate some software engineering activities, including software testing. This research argues that HLL VMs provide a reasonable basis for building an integrated software testing environment. To this end, two software testing features that build on the characteristics of a Java virtual machine (JVM) were devised. The purpose of the rst feature is to automate weak mutation. Augmented with mutation support, the chosen JVM achieved speedups of as much as 95% in comparison to a strong mutation tool. To support the testing of concurrent programs, the second feature is concerned with enabling the deterministic re-execution of Java programs and exploration of new scheduling sequences / Máquinas virtuais de linguagens de programação têm desempenhado um papel importante como mecanismo para a implementação de linguagens de programação. Este trabalho apresenta indícios de que máquinas virtuais de linguagens de programação podem apoiar a criação de ambientes de teste de software integrado. Para tal, duas funcionalidades que tiram proveito das características de uma máquina virtual Java foram desenvolvidas. O propósito da primeira funcionalidade e automatizar a condução de atividades de mutação fraca. The objective of this project was to come to a clear understanding of Irish-American culture--and how that culture expresses itself in individuals. The text considers the role of myth, religion, language, tradition, stereotypes and to a lesser degree gender in the molding of character. Although autobiographical in nature many of the themes are those that encompass the Irish-American experience as a whole. Questions asked throughout the process include, what makes one hyphenated? How is this culture passed from generation to generation? And is it multifaceted? Is there more than one way to express being Irish-American. The text is presented is a narrative which is also part of the tradition it presents and makes the assertion that Irish-Americans have a unique culture within the larger American whole. It asserts, like Maxine Hong-Kingston and Richard Rodriguez that the tradition from whence we come shapes who we are.

This thesis argues for significant correlations in the politics of representation of Chinatown and mother-daughter relationships in two literary texts by Maxine Hong Kingston and Fae Myenne Ng. The two novels do not follow traditional representations of Chinatown and provide critical representations of Chinatown and mother-daughter relationships. First, Kingston's The Woman Warrior reveals how the heroine demystifies a powerful image of her mother and a mystic image of Chinatown in a process of establishing her autonomy. Second, Ng's Bone describes how the heroine tries to free her mother from a dismal image of Chinatown to live her own life outside Chinatown. The analyses of representation of Chinatown and mother-daughter relationships rely on close readings of the textual motifs through a psychoanalytic framework and cultural theories. / Graduation date: 2012
