Studies With the Deuterium Mass SpectrometerDean, Gordon H. 05 1900 (has links)
In the atomic energy pile at Chalk River, heavy water (deuterium oxide, D2O) is to be used as a moderator. Early in 1944, it became evident that frequent determinations of the isotopic composition of D2O samples would be required. For this purpose, there was obtained from the American authorities a mass spectrometer specially designed for routine hydrogen isotope analysis. This instrument was assembled and put into operation at McMaster in the summer of 1944. During the course of subsequent work, two other deuterium mass spectrometers were built in this laboratory, following the design of the instrument sent from the United States; one of these has now been installed at the plant site, and a second is to follow at an early date. The studies reported below involved the determination of operating conditions, the measurement of grid leaks, of the order of 10^10 ohms, and the investigation of further applications of the deuterium mass spectrometer. / Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

Student Political Attitudes at McMaster UniversitySmith, Brian C. 07 1900 (has links)
This thesis is a report of a survey of a political attitudes at McMaster University. The results are based on the data obtained in interviews with 193 undergraduates chosen in a random sample of the undergraduate population. This information was used to examine the level of interest in politics among the members of the sample, and the different ideological attitudes and party preferences of the students interviewed.
The different levels of interest in politics were related to ecological factors such as family and school background, socio-economic status, sex, group involvement and place of residence. Political preferences were related to such factors as socio-economic status, religion, family preferences and academic interests.
The more interesting conclusions might be summarized as follows. The students as a whole are more apathetic towards politics than might have been expected. Those who have an above average interest in politics tend to be found among those studying Arts subjects at Honours level and whose parents also have an above average interest. They also tend to be male.
Students also tend to agree with their parents’ politics, except those who have a high level of interest in the subject.
Finally, the interested students tend to be more radical (at least by the scale set up for this survey) than the apathetic. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

A Foundation for Learning: Parent's Perceptions of the McMaster Children and Youth University (MCYU) / Addressing the Factors That Shape Parent Involvement in the McMaster Children and Youth University (MCYU)Mackey, Hannah January 2022 (has links)
The McMaster Children and Youth University (MCYU) was founded at McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario, Canada. The MCYU delivers free educational programming to children and youth to empower and prepare youth, especially those at a socioeconomic disadvantage, to aspire to higher education (MCYU, 2022). Parents are invited to attend the lectures alongside their children, making parent involvement a key component of the program (MCYU, 2018; Paquin et al, 2018). Participation in educational activities, such as out-of-school programming, school-run field trips, or extracurriculars have been correlated with improved academic achievement and social adjustment (Holloway & Pimlott-Wilson, 2014; Weininger et al., 2015). However, children and youth from disadvantaged backgrounds are less likely to participate in learning enrichment activities outside of school (Siddiqui et al., 2019). These barriers to participation have often been attributed to lower economic status (Chanfreau, et al., 2016; Farthing, 2014; Holloway & Pimlott-Wilson, 2014; Siddiqui et al., 2019). A grounded theory study was employed addressing the following question: How do socio-ecological factors shape parental decision-making for childhood involvement in the MCYU? Twenty parents who participate in the MCYU were interviewed and asked to complete an accompanying survey. After thorough data collection and analysis, the results indicated that positive educational experiences in the lives of parents shape their approach to their children’s education. Their life experiences have led to an intrinsic and extrinsic desire to learn, and the MCYU is an invaluable tool for parents to instill these values in their children through 1) education, 2) exposure, 3) enjoyment, and 4) engagement. This research may inform an expansion of MCYU type programs across Canada as well as aid the MCYU in reaching members of the community who are unable to benefit from the program. While the MCYU is for kids, the appeal for parents should be emphasized in future iterations. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA) / The McMaster Children and Youth University (MCYU) was founded at McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario, Canada. Vliv dynamické neuromuskulární stabilizace na motorický deficit u pacientů po cévní mozkové příhodě / The effect of dynamic neuromusculur stabilization on motor deficit in patients after strokeZelenková, Jana January 2014 (has links)
The aim of the study was to evaluate the effect of specific rehabilitation concept on the motor deficit in patients after stroke. This concept is used at the Department of inpatient rehabilitation FN Motol, the main component is exercise on the principles of dynamic neuromuscular stabilization (DNS) and is based on the principles of developmental kinesiology. The study included 12 patients after stroke. Probands participated in the 3 week therapy, exercise was carried out twice a day. Significant (p <0.05) improvement in motor function of the arm, hand, leg and foot was demonstrated by using Student`s paired t-test. There was a statistically significant improvement in postural control and reducing shoulder pain (all assessed using a specific scale: Chedoke McMaster Stroke Assessment). Changes in the degree of spasticity were evaluated by Modified Ashworth scale. A statistically significant improvement in the degree of spasticity was observed in these muscle groups: the elbow flexors , adductors of lower limb, knee extensors and hamstrings. It has been shown that the concept of dynamic neuromuscular stabilization can be advantageously used in selected patients after stroke. It is appropriate to supplement the DNS therapy with training of ADL.

A temperature control strategy for Stelco McMaster Works /Grandillo, Angelo M. January 1988 (has links)
In this study, it was shown that improvements in the quality of continuously cast steel billets, similar to those which can be achieved by electromagnetic stirring (EMS) of the liquid pool during solidification, can be obtained if casting superheats can be consistently controlled at low levels. A lack of casting temperature control is not only detrimental to the quality of the cast product, but also to a shop's overall productivity. The important variables for temperature control in the ladle, tundish and mould were quantified and possible methods of controlling these variables were proposed. / The thermal state of the ladle lining is one of the major contributors to the variability in casting temperature. It was shown that by reducing energy losses from the refractory ladle lining, by way of incorporating an insulating refractory tile between the ladle shell and the safety lining and by using a ladle lid throughout the cycle of the ladle, temperature losses from the liquid steel can be substantially decreased. Policy Rationale for Innovation Parks in CanadaMunim, Ata-ul January 2018 (has links)
Innovation Parks in Canada / Innovation Parks became an innovation and economic development policy instrument in the Western world more than two decades ago. While Canada was slow to catch up to this phenomenon, it did eventually join the trend. This study analyzes the policy rationales for innovation parks in Canada through a national and sub-national lens. For this purpose, Ontario and Saskatchewan are chosen as comparative points. It compares the Saskatchewan Innovation Place (SIP), McMaster Innovation Park (MIP), and David Johnston Research and Technology Park (DJRTP). The study develops a three-pronged analysis of institutions, interests and ideas to explain why governments support innovation parks as a policy instrument. It is argued that the continued support of these initiatives is largely a function of institutional path-dependence and policy lock-ins manifest through sunk infrastructure investments, desire to balance different interest groups – mainly the commercial real estate sector and the organizations representing the research parks. These institutional and structural struggles are underpinned by the ideational frames of economic development and knowledge-based economic growth. / Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
