Development of systematic measurement on liquid metal

Joakim, Eck January 2019 (has links)
The most common way of producing steel worldwide is with the continuous casting process, where a strand of steel is continuously cast. Further optimization of this process requires data from measurements, measurements which must take place in a hostile high-temperature and corrosive environment such as liquid steel. At Swerim, a Continuous Casting Simulator has been constructed to replicate the flow conditions in the process. A eutectic bismuth-tin alloy with properties similar to steel is used instead to make measurements in liquid metal possible. In this report pressure, velocity and vibration measurements were made using multiple sensors under different flow conditions.

Study of the dynamics of conductive fluids in the presence of localised magnetic fields. Application to the "Lorentz Force Flowmeter".

Viré, Axelle 02 September 2010 (has links)
When an electrically conducting fluid moves through a magnetic field, fluid mechanics and electromagnetism are coupled. This interaction is the object of magnetohydrodynamics, a discipline which covers a wide range of applications, from electromagnetic processing to plasma- and astro-physics. In this dissertation, the attention is restricted to turbulent liquid metal flows, typically encountered in steel and aluminium industries. Velocity measurements in such flows are extremely challenging because liquid metals are opaque, hot and often corrosive. Therefore, non-intrusive measurement devices are essential. One of them is the Lorentz force flowmeter. Its working principle is based on the generation of a force acting on a charge, which moves in a magnetic field. Recent studies have demonstrated that this technique can measure efficiently the mean velocity of a liquid metal. In the existing devices, however, the measurement depends on the electrical conductivity of the fluid. In this work, a novel version of this technique is developed in order to obtain measurements that are independent of the electrical conductivity. This is particularly appealing for metallurgical applications, where the conductivity often fluctuates in time and space. The study is entirely numerical and uses a flexible computational method, suitable for industrial flows. In this framework, the cost of numerical simulations increases drastically with the level of turbulence and the geometry complexity. Therefore, the simulations are commonly unresolved. Large eddy simulations are then very promising, since they introduce a subgrid model to mimic the dynamics of the unresolved turbulent eddies. The first part of this dissertation focuses on the quality and reliability of unresolved numerical simulations. The attention is drawn on the ambiguity that may arise when interpretating the results. Owing to coarse resolutions, numerical errors affect the performances of the discrete model, which in turn looses its physical meaning. In this work, a novel implementation of the turbulent strain rate appearing in the models is proposed. As opposed to its usual discretisation, the present strain rate is in accordance with the discrete equations of motion. Two types of flow are considered: decaying turbulence located far from boundaries, and turbulent flows between two parallel and infinite walls. Particular attention is given to the balance of resolved kinetic energy, in order to assess the role of the model. The second part of this dissertation deals with a novel version of Lorentz force flowmeters, consisting in one or two coils placed around a circular pipe. The forces acting on each coil are recorded in time as the liquid metal flows through the pipe. It is highlighted that the auto- or cross-correlation of these forces can be used to determine the flowrate. The reliability of the flowmeter is first investigated with a synthetic velocity profile associated to a single vortex ring, which is convected at a constant speed. This configuration is similar to the movement of a solid rod and enables a simple analysis of the flowmeter. Then, the flowmeter is applied to a realistic three-dimensional turbulent flow. In both cases, the influence of the geometrical parameters of the coils is systematically assessed.

Simulated and laboratory models of aircraft sound transmission

Thomas, Ashwin Paul 27 August 2014 (has links)
With increased exposure to transportation noise, there have been continued efforts to help insulate homes from aircraft noise. Current aircraft noise guidelines are based primarily on outdoor sound levels. As people spend the majority of their time indoors, however, human perception is evidently more related to indoor sound levels. Investigations are being made to provide further insight into how typical residential constructions affect indoor response. A pilot study has built a single-room "test house", according to typical construction for mixed-humid climate regions, and has directly measured outdoor-to-indoor transmission of sound - with specific focus on continuous commercial aircraft signatures. The results of this study are being used to validate and improve modelling software that simulates a wide range of construction types and configurations for other US climate regions. The improved models will allow for increased flexibility in simulating the impacts of acoustic and energy retrofits. Overall, the project intends to improve the ability to predict acoustic performance for typical US construction types as well as for any possible design alterations for sound insulation.

Outras, como o viscosímetro capilar e o titulador volumétrico de Karl Fischer são, consideravelmente, simples, fornecendo resultados rápidos e precisos / Abstract: Currently, measurement techniques and development of new products and processes require increasingly sophisticated analysis, to meet market specifications and environmental issues. The choice of method of analysis, their theoretical understanding and correct implementation methodology should be evaluated properly, so that the accuracy of the results is the highest possible. Research has been conducted continuously in search of reliable analytical methods, increasingly fast and as far as possible to lower costs. The aim is thus to draw attention to this type of approach, which ensures the quality of results and training of human resources in the technological area. In this context, the objective of this dissertation was to conduct a study on characterization techniques and physico-chemical properties to be essential. A compilation of equipment and accompanying theory were studied in order to aggregate knowledge. As raw materials, were chosen three of the most important products today as applications: Petroleum, biodiesel and fusel oil. The results showed that the techniques studied of DSC and Rheometer require greater care in carrying out the experiments, care ranging from those operating the equipment, even the introduction of the sample. Others, like the viscometer capillary and volumetric Karl Fischer titrator are pretty simple, providing fast and accurate results / Mestrado / Desenvolvimento de Processos Químicos / Mestre em Engenharia Química

Development of 100 kHz-rate CO Laser-Induced Fluorescence in High Speed Flows

Robert Blackwell (15452663) 15 May 2023 (has links)

Understanding boundary layer transition is fundamental to hypersonic vehicle design as the significant heating induced by the transition process informs the development of vehicle thermal protection systems. Carbon-based thermal protection systems have been shown to decrease thermal loads and delay transition by absorbing thermal energy during ablative mass transfer into the boundary layer. To better understand this process, a high-repetition rate measurement technique is needed to temporally resolve carbon species concentrations as they propagate through the boundary layer at frequencies where boundary layer instabilities occur. Carbon monoxide is a dominant product from the chemical reactions that take place during the ablation process and is the species of interest considered in this work. A proposed approach is applying carbon monoxide two-photon laser-induced fluorescence (CO TP-LIF) at 100 kHz+ during a simulated ablation experiment where CO is injected into the boundary layer of an axisymmetric slender-body cone model in the Boeing/AFOSR Mach 6 Quiet Tunnel (BAM6QT) at Purdue University. To develop this capability, a custom-built optical parametric oscillator (OPO) was designed and used in conjunction with a burst-mode laser system to achieve narrowband excitation of CO at 100 kHz. The OPO was designed, built, and characterized through measurements of cavity energy efficiency, spectral bandwidth, and beam quality. Initial demonstrations to show the OPO could successfully achieve CO LIF were conducted in a vacuum cell at 10 Hz. The feasibility of performing CO LIF at 100 kHz in the BAM6QT was then assessed on a bench-scale using a burst-mode laser, a high speed camera, and an imaging intensifier. CO number densities in a vacuum cell were related to those that would be expected within the boundary layer of a 3 degree half-angle cone in the BAM6QT, and a series of measurements were made at these representative conditions. Appreciable signal levels were attained for single dimensional focused line measurements demonstrating high potential for using this technique in the BAM6QT at 100 kHz. The potential for a two-dimensional planar measurement was also assessed with decent promise for success for planar laser sheets of small dimensions (2 mm tall or less). Additionally, an initial BAM6QT test entry was carried out to gain experience with experimental setup; lessons learned from this experience are examined and discussed. To date, CO TP-LIF has only been applied up to 1 kHz repetition rates. This work represents a 100 fold increase over the current CO LIF state of the art and the first reported measurements, bench scale or otherwise, of 100 kHz-rate CO LIF. This lays the foundation for future CO LIF experiments in the BAM6QT at kHz-MHz repetition rates.

Development Of Load Measurement Technique For Arbitrary Shapes

Cockrell, Quintin J 01 December 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Obtaining aerodynamic forces and moments about all three orthogonal axes for arbitrary shapes at arbitrary orientations in a fast manner via a measurement technique specific to Cal Poly’s low-speed wind tunnel to continually obtain the forces and moments under quasi-steady conditions is explored. A Continuous Rotation Technique (CR) uses a 6-DOF load cell and stepper motor to rotate an object about an axis for a complete rotation. The forces and moments acting upon the object pass through the stepper motor and interface plates and recorded by the load cell as the object is rotated continuously a finite number of rotations. An optical encoder installation tracks the progress of a rotation serving indicator between the subsequent rotations to determine starting angles and body slippage. Average loading of measurements at each timestep along the average time for rotation is found. This dataset along the average time is placed in 1-degree bins and averaged to a final dataset of load measurements at 0.5-degree intervals for a complete 360-degree load map. Testing of this technique is performed on aspect ratio 1 circular cylinder and for a sphere. These test cases are representative of the 3D flow features that are prevalent for bodies of finite aspect ratios. The airloads on these canonical shapes were used to calibrate the measurement technique deriving similarity with prior work performed at Georgia Tech's wind tunnel. This thesis showcases the repeatability of the results in a different and smaller wind tunnel with improved certainty on angle measurements. The scope of the thesis tackles the showcase of an initial proof of concept for the incorporation of such a novel measurement technique using Cal Poly resources.

Influence of Geotechnical Properties on Sediment Dynamics, Erodibility, and Geomorphodynamics in Coastal Environments Based on Field Measurements

Brilli, Nicola Carmine 06 June 2023 (has links)
Geotechnical sediment properties such as moisture content, relative density, bearing capacity, and undrained shear strength have been discussed in the context of coastal sediment dynamics. However, these properties have rarely been assessed in their respective relevance or quantitatively related to sediment transport and erodibility. Also, to date there is no framework available for collecting direct measurements of these properties for estimating initiation of motion and erosion rates. Here, it is postulated that improving the ability to measure geotechnical sediment properties in energetic foreshore environments can improve our ability to predict coastal response to climate change. Through a series of field measurements, the research presented here (1) provides a framework for conducting geotechnical measurements of beaches, (2) advances portable free fall penetrometer (PFFP) data analysis in intertidal environments through the introduction of an impact velocity dependent strain-rate correction factor, (3) relates textural and sediment strength properties derived from PFFP measurements to an erosion rate parameter and hydrodynamically driven bed-level change, and (4) uses PFFP measurements to develop a sediment classification scheme in terms of soil behavior and erosion behavior for a mixed sediment type Arctic environment. Relationships between sediment properties other than grain size, most significantly void ratio, and erodibility parameters highlight the relevance of these measurements in geomorphodynamically active sandy beach environments. For the cohesive sediments in the Arctic, undrained shear strength was also related to an erosion rate parameter, allowing for a categorical framework for erodibility classification to be developed. The cohesive framework was combined with the relationships developed for sandy sediments and used to highlight areas of active sediment transport in the context of local morphodynamic and ice gouging processes. Finally, a simple case study showed how implementing in-situ erodibility parameters was important for long-term morphological modelling. The results represent a step forward in our ability to predict and mitigate climate change related issues from coastal erosion. / Doctor of Philosophy / Climate change driven impacts on coastal environments include increasing frequency and severity of storms, coastal erosion, and inundation of populated areas. Specifically for Arctic environments, warming has caused more sediment to be introduced into coastal waters as well as accelerated rates of permafrost melting and shoreline retreat and decreases in sea ice. One aspect of understanding how these changes will continue to affect coastal communities and our ability to predict climate change effects is understanding the role of sediment properties on sediment erosion and shoreline change. Physical and geomechanical (strength) properties of coastal sediments are important for a variety of coastal applications but have rarely been investigated in the context of quantifying, predicting, and assessing erosion, specifically in the context of field measurements. Towards this end, a series of field surveys were conducted along the coast of North Carolina at a sandy beach, and in Harrison Bay, Alaska, an Arctic coastal zone with both sandy and muddy sediments. Tools for taking physical samples of the beach and seabed, measuring the sediment strength, among other properties in place were used to characterize the local sediments. Once a framework was developed for characterizing the type of sediment, the measured properties were then related to measurements of erosion rate from a series of laboratory experiments performed on physical samples taken from the sites. Finally, one of the instruments for measuring sediment strength both on land and in the water was used to develop classification schemes for seabed sediments in terms of their erodibility. The results of this work highlight the importance of geotechnical properties for coastal sediment transport processes, reveal new relationships between sediment properties and properties quantifying erosion behavior, and offer a framework for future research to classify erodibility of coastal environments in the field with a single piece of equipment. Overall, the work presented here contributes to our ability to measure, quantify, and predict coastal response to climate change.

Measuring the impact of information security awareness on social networks through password cracking

Okesola, Julius Olatunji 12 1900 (has links)
Since social networks (SNs) have become a global phenomenon in almost every industry, including airlines and banking, their security has been a major concern to most stakeholders. Several security techniques have been invented towards this but information security awareness (hereafter “awareness”) remains the most essential amongst all. This is because users, an important component of awareness, are a big problem on the SNs regardless of the technical security implemented. For SNs to improve on their awareness techniques or even determine the effectiveness of these security techniques, many measurement and evaluation techniques are in place to ascertain that controls are working as intended. While some of these awareness measurement techniques are inexpensive, effective and efficient to some extent, they are all incident-driven as they are based on the occurrence of (an) incident(s). In addition, these awareness measurement techniques may not present a true reflection of awareness, since many cyber incidents are often not reported. Hence, they are generally adjudged to be post mortem and risk-permissive. These limitations are major and unacceptable in some industries such as insurance, airlines and banking, where the risk tolerance level is at its lowest. This study therefore aims to employ a technical method to develop a non-incident statistics approach of measuring awareness efforts. Rather than evaluating the effectiveness of awareness efforts by the success of attacks or occurrence of an event, password cracking is presented and implemented to proactively measure the impacts of awareness techniques in SNs. The research encompasses the development and implementation of an SN – sOcialistOnline, the literature review of the past related works, indirect observation (available information), survey (as a questionnaire in a quiz template), and statistical analysis. Consequently, measurement of awareness efforts is shifted from detective and corrective paradigms to preventive and anticipatory paradigms, which are the preferred information security approaches going by their proactive nature. / Engineering, Science & Technology / D. Equivalence between in-house and conventional EM immunity test techniques

Nicholls, Christo 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng (Electrical and Electronic Engineering))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / Conventional immunity tests are both time consuming and costly. There is thus a reasonable interest in relatively quick, but accurate and cost effective, in-house pre-compliance test techniques within an engineering design-house. This thesis provides information on the equivalence between in-house and conventional immunity test techniques. Three techniques were evaluated, namely: 1. E-field radiation with a log periodic antenna (conventional test technique); 2 E-field radiation with an inhouse designed and constructed modified TEM cell (in-house test technique); 3. Current injection using a complete off the shelf EMCO current probe device (in-house test technique). After the transfer data of the EMCO probe was verified, the modified TEM cell design, construction and equivalent measurement tests were performed. These tests revealed that within the respective bandwidth of interest, the devices produced results that are equivalent to each other within 0.9dB. Hence equivalence between in-house and conventional test techniques is possible.

Développement des techniques optiques et acoustiques de mesure de champs orientées vers la vibroacoustique / Development of optical and acoustical full-field measurement techniques for vibro-acoustics

Nistea, Ioana Theodora 06 December 2010 (has links)
The use of optical measurement techniques requires a choice, often difficult, between temporal resolution and spatial resolution. Speckle interferometry (IS) provides high spatial resolution maps of vibration amplitudes, but the temporal resolution of measurements is reduced, due to the low acquisition rates of detectors. The thesis is dedicated to the development of an interferometric system that is able to measure dynamic phenomena with superior temporal resolution. The system was tested at acquisition rates exceeding 26,000 frames/s, for the following cases: harmonic excitation; arbitrary excitation; dynamic loading by a staircase signal and mechanical shock. The tests showed that the system is able to overcome conventional systems of continuous wave SI with respect to the measurement of dynamic phenomena.
