M.A. (Media Studies) / One of the problems facing formal education in South Africa today is that. of coping with the educational needs of a fast developing country. An important recommendation of the De Lange Report was that educational technology should be utilised to alleviate this problem. Educational television, especially the use of video, is regarded as one of the most important technological media which can assist in this matter. A study was undertaken in the use of educational television in developing and developed countries in resolving educational problems. The role of teacher training in the successful implementation of educational television was also scrutinised. It was found that teacher training played a decisive role in the successful use of this medium. Teachers inadequately trained in the use of the medium lacked the knowledge to use it properly in the classroom. They also showed a resistance to the medium. At· present educational television in South Africa is aimed at non-formal educational needs but from 1 April 1986 the SABC will commence the broadcasting of formal educational programmes. In this study it is thus recommended that training courses in the use of educational television should be instituted at all "teacher training centres in South Africa and that all educational departments should give attention to the formal and non-formal training of in-service teachers .. Guidelines for a training course are suggested in this study. The contents of such a course would include components like television literacy, television and cognition, the analysis and evaluation of programmes, integration with the various subjects, the use and compilation of· support material and small scale television production. It is also recommended that the course should comprise lectures in theory and practical work sessions. -These practical work sessions would be regarded as the most important part of the course.

M.Ed. / Teaching and learning activity is characterised by effective communication. Teaching and learning as communication is successful when the learner has taken in new information with understanding. Effective teaching cannot take place unless effective communication takes place. On the other hand effective communication depends on media that are used in the teaching-learning activity (Heinich, et al, 1989: 13). In the teaching and learning of biology, educational media are important. The study of biology is a practical venture that requires the use of media e.g. realia, models, pictures and chemicals. Biology needs to be learnt through active participation, experience, observation and investigation by both the learner and the educator. This is not possible without the . use of media. In real life, the learner's senses are stimulated by media such as real objects, pictures, radio, television, books, etc. In the teaching of biology, the learner's senses must be equally stimulated. It is therefore necessary that the biology teacher be continuously reminded of the Chinese proverb which says, " I hear, and I forget; I see and I remember. I do, and I understand" (Dwyer, 1993: 194).

Production Trends in the Utilization of Commercial Multi-Image Presentations Produced in Dallas During the High Growth Years 1979-1981McCracken, Bruce (Bruce Edward) 05 1900 (has links)
This study was designed to determine the general volume of multi-image production in Dallas County, Texas from 1979 through 1981 as categorized by: the presentation, number of projectors utilized, and by relevant aspects of presentation with analysis of 85 respondents. The questionnaire yielded 633 variables in the computer analysis. The study revealed significant growth in multi-image production with the 1981 total being more than twice the 1979 total. 1988 consensus indicates that the multi-image use is dictated by the business climate. Having been adopted initially, it is retained by those who find it effective and a suitable medium for larger screens.

Significant changes to the British Columbia's educational system have been caused by new
curriculums that are based on a resource-based learning and teaching model. The Ministry of
Education evaluates learning resources and allocates funding to support the acquisition of learning
resources at the district and school level. Learning resources selected for classroom use are to
support the Principles of Learning:
• learning requires the active participation of the student;
• people learn in a variety of ways and at different rates;
• learning is both an individual and a group process.
The Ministry recommends that schools have a Learning Resource Committee to develop a school
vision for learning resources, evaluate current school resources, establish selection priorities,
evaluate resources and make recommendations for purchase, and identify learning resource
management systems. A survey of Vancouver elementary and secondary schools indicates that
41% of the schools have Learning Resource Committees, but that their activities rarely include all
the recommendations of the Ministry. The survey shows that only 25% of the Committees have
an established procedure for selecting learning resources. This study includes an analysis of
Learning Resources Committees at two secondary and one elementary school where interviews
were done with administrators, teacher-librarians, teachers and staff assistants provide a picture of
how learning resources are selected and managed and their impact on resource-based learning and
teaching. This study found that systems for selecting and managing learning resources are in the
developmental stage as teachers move from primarily print formats to a broad range of print and
non-print learning resources.

The effectiveness of multimedia and computer-assisted activities in the teaching of Afrikaans as a second language.Basson, Irene 08 January 2013 (has links)
Teachers are increasingly aware of the technological world in which their students live.
They are aware that the use of computers affects the motivation and attitudes of learners.
There has also recently been governmental pressure to integrate ICT in the teaching and
learning at school level. The question remains how exactly these technologies should be
implemented, particularly to aid in the acquisition of a second language.
This study investigates if the use of CALL in the teaching of second language Afrikaans
has affected the attitudes and motivation of learners and if it had any effect on the results
they achieved. A comparative study was conducted with a group Grade 11 learners in
which they completed a series of research tasks that included no technology or computerrelated
input. The same group was also exposed to lessons with a computer-assisted
approach, where a series of comparative research tasks were completed with the use of
technology. The group completed reflective questionnaires on the tasks they had
completed. The sets of tasks were analyzed and compared to each other and the
reflective questionnaires were analyzed and general trends and findings were noted.
The findings in this study suggests that learners respond well to computer-assisted tasks
and that there is a marked improvement in attitude and motivation when they are exposed
to technology in the second language classroom. Furthermore it is evident that the shift in
motivation contributes to an overall improvement of their results, which in computerassisted
tasks are on average 8%-12% higher.
