The effect of dual versus mono medium teaching on the ability of bilingual, typically developing children to label graphic symbols in two languages

Wylie, Amy January 2017 (has links)
A large portion of the world’s population is multilingual. This trend is reflected in the population with communication disorders, and therefore in people with complex communication needs (CCN). People with CCN may need alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) systems to facilitate their participation in daily life. These systems are often related to the language of the person’s community. Yet, if this person lives in a multilingual community, little current research is available to guide the design of AAC systems that give access to expression in more than one language. This pilot study aimed to determine the ability of typically developing Afrikaans-English bilingual children, between the ages of 4;6 (years;months) and 6;11, to label Picture Communication Symbols (PCS) in both these languages when taught with mono medium (English) versus dual medium (Afrikaans and English) teaching. Four participants, who spoke Afrikaans and English, were included in the study. A withinsubjects crossover design was used. Each participant was taught two sets of symbols, one using mono medium and one dual medium teaching. Treatments were counterbalanced for order and set. Results tentatively showed that the teaching method was successful, with participants being able to label most symbols in English when taught in either mono (English) or dual medium. Participants were also able to label symbols in Afrikaans when taught the symbols by dual medium teaching. Some participants were spontaneously able to translate symbols taught by mono medium teaching (English) to Afrikaans. This pilot study tentatively suggests that this ability is dependent on the child’s receptive vocabulary ability in both languages, as well as their ability to express the concepts depicted by the symbols in both L1 and L2. Future research is needed with studies that include a larger sample size, to be able to draw more robust conclusions. / Mini Dissertation (M(AAC))--University of Pretoria, 2017. / National Research Foundation (NRF) / Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (CAAC) / M(AAC) / Unrestricted

O uso de croquis cartográficos no ensino médio. / The use of cartographic sketches in schools

Morone, Rosemeire 06 May 2002 (has links)
The main purpose of this work was to reflect on the pedagogic methods used to teach Geography in schools. A special emphasis was given to discuss the difficulties faced by beginning teachers in the situation where they have to didactically transfer their academic knowledge to their students in a way that will permit it to be assimilated. We have also discussed how to choose the methodology to be applied in the classes. We have looked for a methodology that would help our children to systematize and understand a large amount of information, and to make it easily accessible and related to their own reality. Using the elaboration of cartographic sketches, we have intended to investigate the process of the development of geography thoughts in our third grade high school students, with the objective of using the methodological cartography proposed in the studies of geography from Simielli (1996).

A new legal planning regulates this modality of teaching, in Brazil, with the approval of the Law of Guidelines and Bases of National Education - LDBEN in 9394/1996. It s analyzed, especially the period between 2004 and 2009, regarding to curricular organization and their possibilities to subsidize the construction of an educational project engaged to technological training citizen and emancipatory. It addresses the relations between the categories education, work, science, technology and culture in capitalist societies for the analysis of official documents of the IFG, the interviews, questionnaires, finally of data collected. I try to raise in relation to concepts of professional technical education of medium level, man and work, that guide the construction of curriculum project for this modality of teaching, on IFG (unit), the Technical Course of Buildings, class of 2007, and as the subjects in this process, understand the various elements are constituted of this modality of teaching. This is a qualitative investigation in the form of case study, where they are charged, too, document analysis, bibliographic and field that historicizes the problem discussed considering, especially the political, cultural and socioeconomic aspects involved in the process based on the thought of theorists who adopt a dialectical epistemology. As support to the data collection I realize application of semi-structured questionnaires and interviews with teachers, students, educators and managers. The first chapter develops an analysis of categories education, work, science, technology and culture from the texture existing between the historical and social relations, placing them in their entirety heterogeneous and its impact on professional qualification of men and women. In the second chapter, it is treated the Brazilian educational politic, from the approval of the new LDBEN in 9394/1996. It detains in the study of the National Curricular Guidelines for Professional Education of medium level in the period between 1997 and 2009. In the third and final chapter presents the research and their analysis. According to the theoretical studied and the data collected from talking of subjects participants in the research, a professional education emancipatory, transforming and citizen requires a curriculum developed in an integrated way, as an educational proposal opened and active, focused on the learner in its relation with the world of work and for work, which requires the generation of times and space teachers and students, to performance collective activities, the result of negotiation of personal elements to occurs the interdisciplinary process.
