Olsson Idman, Ella January 2016 (has links)
This essay is first and foremost an exploration of the melodramatic themes in John Fowles The French Lieutenant’s woman. By defining melodramatic plot events and analyzing the novels postmodern narrative as a melodramatic element in its own right, this study’s purpose is to explain what makes the reader react in a specific way – Or more specifically: feel alienated by the books narrator.                       Throughout the study, I’ve analyzed specific melodramatic examples in The French Lieutenant’s Woman; Its multiple endings, the meta-fictional narrator and its characters and connected them to the melodramatic genre and sensibility in an attempt to define the reader’s emotions towards a seemingly unconventional narrative.

Remade in Our Image: Gender, Melodrama, and Conservatism in Post-9/11 Slasher Remakes

Hayt, Anthony 17 June 2014 (has links)
This project details the ways in which the classic slasher films of the 1970s, and their post-9/11 remakes, are representative of the individual and complex world views out of which each set of films were borne. The remakes manipulate gender roles including those of the Final Girl and the mother; genre conventions, including increases in domestic melodrama and pathos; production models, including the use of star actors, directors, and producers; sexuality and presentation of the sexualized female body; and race, especially in fine differences between white and non-white characters. In doing so, the post-9/11 films reveal a conservative cultural climate that strives to show recovery of the nuclear family unit after trauma, unlike the originals which are more nihilistic in tone and portray families as either absent or deeply flawed and unrecoverable.

A Tomb With A View and Two Stories

Blanshei, Matthew Louis 01 August 2010 (has links)
In the “Introduction,” I discuss how the works presented in this “creative” thesis draw upon traditions of both experimental fiction and realism. The novella makes up Volume I of a longer work. The episodes in the life of the protagonist are depicted in chronological order, but not as chapters in a seamless narrative. In constructing the novella in this way, I attempted to convey how an individual might, for reasons peculiar to himself, choose to view certain moments of his life as turning points. But I do not rely upon the first-person point of view. By using a third-person limited, a third-person omniscient and “second-person” narrative voice in several of the chapters, I hoped, in part, to give to the representation of the “the life of Donovan Jewell” the quality of the “case study.” Each of the “two stories” following the novella is meant to stand alone. Written in the present tense, they both offer intimations of a coming family crisis—or perhaps of a crisis that will be forever postponed.

Starck, Jessica January 2012 (has links)

Representational Love Triangle of Dion Boucicault's “The Octoroon”

Alvarado, Pedro 09 May 2014 (has links)
The Octoroon, by Dion Boucicault, is a play that Boucicault himself argued is “an effective intervention in the slavery debate, one designed to reveal the real cruelties of the slavery system” (Mullen 91). By calling The Octoroon an intervention, Boucicault intimated that his play could influence what was happening during the antebellum period of United States history by starting a dialog between opposing factions. While Boucicault did indeed contribute to this dialog, he is also known for not choosing a side. “‘Nothing in the world,’ protested the Times, ‘can be more harmless and non-committal than Mr. Boucicault’s play.’ It had in it ‘no demonstrations in favor of the down-trodden, no silly preachings of pious negroes, no buncombe of Southern patriots, no tedious harangues of Eastern philanthropists.’ The Octoroon was exactly what it had intended to be ‘a picture of life in Louisiana!’” (Kaplan 551). By simply writing a play that paints “a picture of life in Louisiana,” Boucicault was able to allow his work to present the complex issues that are the ingredients in this dramatic portrait.
