Preserving Texas : historic preservation, nationalism, and the Daughters of the Republic of TexasMeyer, Hannah Nebb 07 July 2011 (has links)
How did the Daughters of the Republic of Texas use historic preservation to help create and perpetuate Texas nationalism? Historic sites are an important part of creating and maintaining a nation-state’s national identity, but even more so when the nation no longer exists. The DRT preserved and created a common Texas national history with the preservation and interpretation of the Alamo and the French Legation Museum. The Alamo is the principal symbol of the Texas identity. Before the Alamo was a place of state and national reverence, before it was a battle site, before it was the Alamo, it was a Spanish mission, San Antonio de Valero. Yet, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas reconstructed the history of the mission so as to include only the thirteen days (February 23- March 6, 1836) when it was the site of one of the most important and well-known battles in the War for Texas Independence. This interpretation decision has shaped the way the Alamo is viewed through our collective memory. The French Legation Museum in Austin is important to the story of nationalism in Texas. Although it is not as recognized as the Alamo, the French Legation Museum is a crucial component in the story of Texas as an independent republic. The French Legation gives Texans a physical history of the Republic of Texas, thus strengthening and perpetuating the Texas national identity. The DRT’s preservation decisions at Alamo and the French Legation perpetuate the memory of Texas as an independent republic, and thus preserve the Texas national identity. / text

A sociological analysis of culture and memory : a case study of the Kigali Memorial Center of Genocide in Rwanda.Bazubagira, Appoline Kabera. January 2007 (has links)
The 'never again' slogan to genocide, expressed by the United Nations Organization in 1948, after the Armenian and Jewish genocides has not been a barrier to other genocides whose Holocausts are a product. In 1994 in Rwanda, genocide occurred and the Kigali Memorial Center of Genocide is one of the Memorials (Holocaust) which stands as a reminder of the horror, in order to inform the community to keep watching. This raised
the curiosity of the researcher, to analyze how these new symbols can contribute to restore and revitalize social and cultural values in the context of Rwanda. The inside of the house offers on opportunity to visit the displayed history in which the genocide is rooted, including the period of genocide through survivors' experiences represented in short movies and by the material used in the killings. There is a room reserved for
displays of the others' genocides in the world. Outside the house, mass graves surrounded by a garden, announce the burial place and a documentary place. The first chapter is the general introduction of the study and outlines the framework of the study. The second chapter offers the syntheses of the literature review that it presents the social and political context in which the genocide took root. The third chapter offers the theoretical framework which deals with the nature of culture and its influence in the understanding of the Kigali Memorial Center of Genocide. The fourth chapter focuses on the fieldwork methodology. This study makes use of the qualitative approach. The primary data was collected through in-depth interviews of twenty one individuals and discussions with four focus groups with ten respondents in each group. Respondents were randomly chosen. The secondary data was used to complete the primary data. The fifth chapter is the presentation of the research findings. The findings reveal that after completing the construction of the Kigali Memorial Center of Genocide in 2004, spontaneous and organized visits to the Kigali Memorial Center of Genocide have taken place. This 'window' of what happened, inspires visitors and communities that there is a need to understand the past which can help in building a hopeful future together, for sustainable peace. The sixth chapter is the conclusion of the study which makes with recommendations and suggests further research. / Thesis (M.Soc.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2007.

Holocaust commemoration in Vancouver, B.C., 1943-1975Schober, Barbara 11 1900 (has links)
The subject of this thesis is the development of Holocaust
commemoration in the city of Vancouver, British Columbia in the
period between 1943-1975. In much of the current literature, the
two decades following the Second World War are considered to have
been a time when the Holocaust was virtually absent from the public
discourse of North American Jewry. Commemoration, according to
this view, is said to have been a private affair limited to
survivors, a situation which changed only after the appearance of
neo-Nazism in the early 1960s, the trial of Adolf Eichmann in 1961,
and particularly in the wake of the Arab-Israeli wars of 1967 and
1973.
Based on my own study of the oral and documentary materials
pertaining to Warsaw Ghetto memorials in Vancouver, I argue that
these assessments, which are largely based on the official
announcements and priorities of the national Jewish leadership, are
of limited value in a community context, where there is evidence of
a considerable variety of responses to the murder of European Jewry
long before the awareness-raising events said to have initiated
"Holocaust consciousness".

The cultural landscape report for George Rogers Clark National Historical ParkJones, Christina Petlichkoff January 1995 (has links)
Although the GRC National Historical Park, Vincennes, Indiana, has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1966, its development as an Historic Designed Landscape had never been thoroughly researched. Archival research and a field survey of the site evaluated the existing conditions of the grounds and structures to determine their historical significance, integrity and physical condition. The George Rogers Clark Memorial, the park grounds, and other structures and features in and near the park setting were determined to be a historic designed landscape that used formal, classical design principles in a response to the City Beautiful Movement, popular at the beginning of this century, to memorialize the achievements of a man and people significant to our national history. An analysis comparing the historic plans and designers' intent for the park to the existing conditions has resulted in a rehabilitation recommendation for the park that includes the process for returning the park to its original design and an advocation for the development of the historic park setting. / Department of Landscape Architecture

This study has as a main objective to understand how the memorials of Matriz Square, in Porto Alegre, build their institutional relevance for the State by means of their organizational heroes. O patrimônio imaterial sob a ótica dos museus: novas aproximações, perspectivas e rupturas. / The Intangible Heritage from the perspective of museums: new approaches, perspectives and rupturesKarina Alves Teixeira 22 October 2014 (has links)
The present work has as its studied objetc the imaterial or intagible heritage and their ways of musealization. Being the museums the maximum places of heritage presence, we aim to discover, identify and measure the built relationships between the immaterial or intangible assets and those spaces. To attend this purpose the research begins from the historicity of the definition of heritage, and how is the binding between tangible and intangible heritage. In a second step, the object of study is analyzed in locus in the Memorial of Resistance of São Paulo, where it is applied the experimental part of the research, and that corresponds to the third point of this research, in order to identify how the intangible is musealized and how it is perceived by its stakeholders. To do this the focus of analysis is on the Program of Regular Collection of Testimonies, because through it the museum collects the heritage reference in which works and builds the Memorial of Resistance of São Paulo\'s museological processes. Thus, an analysis is undertaken of the intentions of the program, its relationship with other programmatic lines, and their verified results on exhibition through institutional sources and reviews of public. Finally, a more general analysis seeks to locate the participation of social actors and memory agents on preservation processes.
