Choral Problems in Handel's Messiah

Williams, John J. (John Joseph) 05 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate, through stylistic analysis, the choral problems in twelve selected choruses from George Frederick Handel's oratorio, Messiah. The twelve choruses were selected for analysis in this study after consultation with several authorities in the field of choral music and on the basis that they are representative of problems encountered in the remaining choruses. Each of the twelve choruses was analyzed individually. Chapter I of this study presents the purpose of the study, the sub-problems involved, definitions of terms, delimitations, the basic hypothesis of the study, the basic assumptions of the study, methodology and the plan of the report. Chapter II of this study contains a brief biographical sketch of Handel, a discussion of the circumstances surrounding the composition of Messiah, and a survey of the Handelian oratorio Chorus. Chapter III presents the results of the analysis relevant to a discussion of each of the twelve choruses followed by a sectional presentation of the choral problems. In Chapter IV, a summary, some conclusions and recommendations are offered. Appendices A and B present reviews of selected recordings and vocal-piano editions of Messiah respectively.

The petrine community was able to perceive in the suffering and oppression they were experiencing the resemblance of the image of the Suffering Servant to their own suffering and the suffering of Jesus. Going through the pericopes of 1Pd 2,21-25 and Is 53,1-10, it can be concluded that, in the eyes of the petrine community, Jesus perfectly fulfilled the announced Messianic characteristics. In order to understand the Messianic traits in these two communities, classical and contemporary authors were used to establish due dialogue on the issue. The academic reflections about Jesus Messiah Sufferer were made through a bibliographical research, supported by the historical-critical method, enriched by the sociological method and by the conflictual model. In making the approach of Jesus' suffering to that of the Suffering Servant of the Babylonian captivity, the petrine community realized the fulfillment of the Messianic promise, Jesus was the Messiah, not the triumphalistic incarnation that the Jews expected, but the incarnation in suffering. It is through suffering that the Petrine theology of Jesus Messiah the Sufferer is established.

Saint Paul, the Ismāʻīlīs, and the end of the world : new visions of the religious law

Velji, Jamel A. January 2004 (has links)
Hasan Salah, a 13th-century exponent of the Isma'ili qiyamat doctrine, and Saint Paul the Apostle, the author of much of the New Testament, believed that during their lifetimes, a Messiah had come. The arrival of the Messiah triggered the end time; in this new time of sacredness, both authors believed that it was impossible---and even counterproductive---to gain salvation by following the traditional religious law. This thesis juxtaposes both authors' conceptions of the religious law, highlighting how each author reinterprets scripture to argue that the law simply cannot bring salvation in this new time. It then discusses how, in place of the law, both authors advocate a new, more individual soteriology structured around the Messianic figure. This thesis then discusses the seven shared structural features of both eschatologically based theologies, strengthening the corpus of evidence suggesting that Isma'ili thinkers often incorporate specifically Christian elements into their theology.

IMANUEL E ESPÍRITO DE IAHWEH: Leitura e releitura do messianismo em Isaías (7,10-17; 8,23-9,6; 11,1-9) / IMANUEL E ESPÍRITO DE IAHWEH: Leitura e releitura do messianismo em Isaías (7,10-17; 8,23-9,6; 11,1-9)

In this we meet the principal point of the messianic thought of Isaiah. It is important to observe that the isaian messianism comes from the conception of messiah that comes to govern from the right and justice, and, thus, to establish the peace. The messianism presented for this prophet don t part of the spheres of the kingdom power, but of the small and fragile persons of the society, endowed with the spirit of Yahweh. It has to be distinguished that the prophecy of Isaiah is a watershed with respect to the messianic theology in the Kingdom of the South, especially the prophets after him. In Isaiah, we meet the rupture with the ruling classes and a warlike messianism. The proposal of this prophet points to a fragile messiah, but that is moved by the blow, by the movement of Yahweh and his action. And thus, Isaiah opens the doors for understanding a poor messiah, as Zechariah recognize, a messiah in service, presented for the Second-Isaiah, or who knows a shepherd messiah, as considered by Micah and Ezekiel and received well for the traditions of the first century (Jo 10,10). The messiah in Isaiah have names and adjectives : Imanuel, child, root of Jessé, but do not have face, do not have geographic localization, is not fit in the messianic type since the davidic of Jerusalem. These messiah can be found at any time with any face, by that is important a new reading messianic presented in texts of the current Christianity. Many of inspired them in the isaian prophecy of 8º. century B.C.

Vývoj mesiášských představ s pohledem na Iz 52,13 - 53,12 / The History of Messianic Ideas with Regard to Isaiah 52,13 {--} 53,12

FÜRSTOVÁ, Veronika January 2007 (has links)
This work is focused on the history of Messianic ideas in context of the Old Testament, in Jewish nation in the period between the Old and the New Testaments, and in the area of ancient Near East (Egypt, Mesopotamy, and preIsraelite Kanaan). The author of the work regards Messianic ideas in the area of Mediterrean and Persia in the age of Hellenism. She also considers eschatological Messianic figures in Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism. In the second part of the work, she studies the passage from prophet Isaiah 52,13-53,12 and its figure of Lord{\crq}s servant, then she also mentions the impact of that figure on the authors of the New Testament. The Messiah figure's origin lies in preIsraelite religious ideas of ancient Orient. The Jewish idea of Messiah differs from the others. The work is concluded by the statement, that concepts of "Messiah" as well as "Servant" in DeuteroIsaiah expresses mission and function, which was in different backgrounds interpreted in a different way. Various figures, especially kings, entered this role. The saving function of the Messiah consists in certain sacrifice, sometimes self-sacrifice, which considerably improves the quality of life of particular group of people.

Revolution i Hollywood : En analys av Judas and the Black Messiah utifrån den kritiska teorin / Revolution in Hollywood : An analysis of Judas and the Black Messiah based on critical theory

Willebrand Bünger, Kristian January 2022 (has links)

Jephthah's Daughter: A Hebrew Foreground for Jesus' Passion in Matthew

Seariac, Hanna Elizabeth 12 August 2022 (has links)
While there are key differences between Jephthah's daughter's story and that of Jesus, not least the difference in gender of the sacrificial victims, this thesis posits that both the similarities and differences between these two accounts can enrich readings of Jesus' death in the gospel of Matthew. A careful comparison of the narrative of Jephthah's daughter with Jesus' Passion narrative in the gospel of Matthew leads to the conclusion that Jesus' death should be interpreted as a human sacrifice. Reading Jesus' death as a human sacrifice and locating it in that socio-religious context makes his death indicative of a transactional, covenantal relationship between him and the Father. These two accounts also share archetypes that come from the Hebrew Bible. Foregrounding Jesus' narrative with Jepthah's daughter's narrative intricately reveals Jesus' connections with the Hebrew Bible, shedding light on the interpretation of his Passion.
