D’une esthétique métakitsch sur la scène contemporaine : évolution de la notion de kitsch et son usage au second degré dans des mises en scène d’opérettes de Jacques Offenbach au XXIe siècle / Metakitsch Aesthetics on the Contemporary Stage : evolution of the notion of kitsch and its use in directions of Jacques Offenbach's operettas in the 21th century

Le spectacle vivant actuel fait la part belle à des représentations légères, divertissantes, qui jouent avec le mauvais goût et intègrent la culture de masse. Il se dégage alors de certaines mises en scène, à la valeur artistique pourtant indéniable, une tonalité qui amène à les qualifier de kitsch. Or, selon Hermann Broch, le kitsch est “l’anti-art” par excellence. Cette contradiction tient au fait que, lorsque le kitsch est envisagé à distance, comme l'ont démontré Susan Sontag et Guy Scarpetta, à un second degré, il peut accéder à l’art. Pour qualifier de kitsch une représentation sans que cela renvoie à un jugement de valeur dépréciatif et afin de comprendre les modalités de ce renversement, il faut au préalable identifier le kitsch. En s’appuyant sur les définitions de cette notion par des penseurs comme Walter Benjamin ou Clement Greenberg et sur les descriptions des propriétés du kitsch par Abraham Moles et Christophe Genin, cette thèse s'arrête, notamment, sur le rôle du processus autoréflexif de la métathéâtralité. Celle-ci permet en effet au kitsch, en se dénonçant comme tel, de devenir un outil scénique qui produit une esthétique que nous appelons métakitsch. Dans l’objectif de saisir concrètement les enjeux, les effets et les limites de cette esthétique, l’opérette s'est avérée le genre théâtral le plus propice. Aussi la deuxième partie de cette étude est-elle centrée, d’une part sur quatre œuvres de Jacques Offenbach par un même metteur en scène, Laurent Pelly, de l’autre sur l’analyse comparative de quatre représentations de La Belle Hélène d’Offenbach par des metteurs en scène différents. Il en ressort que l’utilisation du kitsch, qui offre une grande liberté aux metteurs en scène, engendre des spectacles souvent ironiques, voire caustiques, hybrides, éclectiques et ludiques. L’utilisation du kitsch, de l'anti-art dans l'art, semble répondre aux besoins de renouveau du public. / Modern live shows tend to be light and fun affairs which integrate with bad taste and popular culture. Some stagings, which possess an undeniable artistic value, have emerged with a tone that one could call kitsch. According to Hermann Broch, kitsch is the "anti-art". This contradiction arises because, as Susan Sontag and Guy Scarpetta have demonstrated, when kitsch is considered at a distance, with irony, it can be considered art. To call a show kitsch in a non-pejorative manner, and in order to understand the manner of this reversal, one must first define kitsch. Based on the definitions of this notion by thinkers like Walter Benjamin and Clement Greenberg and the descriptions of the properties of kitsch by Abraham Moles and Christophe Genin, this dissertation will notably end with the role of the self-reflexive process of metatheatre. This allows kitsch, in identifying it as such, to become a tool for the stage that produces an aesthetic that we call metakitsch. In terms of concretely defining the stakes, the effects and the limits of this aesthetic, the operetta has proved to be the most suitable theatrical genre. The second part of this study is centered, on the one hand, on four works by Jacques Offenbach presented by the same director, Laurent Pelly, and on the other, on a comparative analysis of four representations of La Belle Helene by Offenbach, presented by different directors. It will emerge that the use of kitsch, which offers a great deal of freedom to directors, produces spectacles that are often ironic, even caustic, hybrid, eclectic and playful. The use of kitsch, of anti-art in art, seems to meet the public's need for something new.

Théâtres à leur miroir (XVIIe et XXe siècles) : facettes françaises et francophiles d'un procédé à l'espagnole / Theatres at their mirrors (XVIIth and XXth centuries) : French and francophile facets of a very spanish device

Notre étude se propose de mettre au jour le dynamisme et la vie de procédés métathéâtraux proprement français qui ont pu paraître en sommeil pendant plus de deux siècles.À partir de pièces reposant sur les jeux de spécularité au sein du fonds dramatique du Siècle d’Or et de celui du théâtre français du dix-septième siècle, elle compare d’abord dans ces deux corpus les modalités de spécularité ainsi que les emprunts et aménagements français en la matière afin d’essayer de comprendre leurs causes et de dégager les archétypes formels, sémantiques et enfin scénographiques spécifiquement français. Elle révèle ensuite les facteurs qui ont permis à ces procédés de retrouver une nouvelle vigueur dans le théâtre français au vingtième siècle, tout en étudiant les changements opérés dans ces structures spéculaires et en repérant les tendances dominantes de la modernité à cet égard. Alors qu’un mouvement parallèle de remise à l’honneur des jeux spéculaires se remarque sur la scène espagnole du vingtième siècle, elle met enfin en lumière le fait que malgré la langue, ce sont les pièces spéculaires françaises qui ont inspiré maints pays d’Amérique latine dont Cuba, où l’activité théâtrale se signale par un étonnant dynamisme, de puissantes dramaturgies. Elle expose aussi évidemment sur les raisons de cet intérêt différencié pour le procédé, et pour sa pratique par des auteurs français, de l’autre côté de l’Atlantique.En partant d’un concept nouveau recouvrant sept formes majeures de spécularité dramatique et permettant d’établir une typologie examinant leurs modalités françaises de création et de fonctionnement, cette thèse se donne donc pour but de retracer et mettre au jour les transferts et les métamorphoses qu’a subis, depuis ses origines jusqu’au vingtième siècle, ce que nous avons nommé le « théâtre à son miroir français », afin de dégager l’universalité non seulement de ces formes mais aussi et surtout de certaines de leurs significations et de leurs réalisations scéniques. / Our study aims to reveal the life and dynamism of the genuinely French meta-theatrical devices that may have seemed dormant for more than two centuries.It is based on plays which are founded on mirror dynamics, chosen within the drama of the Spanish Siglo de oro and the French seventeenth century theatre. It first compares the modalities of the specular mechanisms and the French borrowings and adjustments in both these corpuses in order to try and understand their causes and to bring out the formal, semantic and stage archetypes that are specifically French. Then it sets out the factors that enabled these devices to undergo a revival in the French theatre of the twentieth century, while studying the changes that appeared in the specular structures and identifying the dominant modern tendencies that characterize these structures. Although it is true that the mirror dynamics are also brought to life on the twentieth century Spanish stage, this study finally reveals that it is the French specular plays – though the language would indicate otherwise – that inspire many countries in South America including Cuba where the dramatic creativity finds its originality in its surprising dynamism and its powerful dramatic arts. This study also brings out the reasons that explain such a distinct interest of Latin American playwrights for the device and for its practice in the French theatre. This thesis produces a new concept covering seven major specular theatrical forms, which enables the establishment of a typology to study the French modalities of creation and operation. Its purpose is to retrace and reveal what transfers and metaphors « the theatre at its French mirror », as we chose to call it, has undergone, from its origins to the twentieth century, in order to bring out the universality not only of these forms but, most of all, of some of their meanings and stage achievements.

The Actual versus the Fictional in Betrayal, The Real Thing and Closer

Text in English / Although initially dismissed as superficial, Harold Pinter’s Betrayal, Tom Stoppard’s The Real Thing, and Patrick Marber’s Closer use the theme of marital betrayal as a trope to investigate metatheatrical and epistemological issues. This study aims to demonstrate how these three plays define and explore the concept of authenticity within the fictional as well as the actual world; how arbitrary the construction and mediation of the characters’ identities are, not only from their own perspective, but also from the audience’s; the significance of the audience’s role in these plays and how issues of authenticity, fictionality and dishonesty impact on a genre that depends on illusion. This study intends to provide a new interpretation of these three texts through an analysis drawn from postmodern and poststructuralist theories, concerning the concept of authenticity within art and language. This study finds that the fictional worlds in these plays are created through mediation, which includes everyday language as well as complex works of art. Authenticity is shown to be an elusive concept. Language is either unsuccessfully used to force authentic responses from characters, or as a shield. In Betrayal, language functions as a protective barrier, preventing the characters from knowing one another. The Real Thing suggests that although inauthenticity may be established, the inverse is not necessarily true. In Closer, the characters try in vain to access authenticity through different registers of language. Furthermore, neither the body nor the mind is shown to be the locus of authenticity in Closer. Within the postmodern context where originality is impossible, mimicry is not seen as something external and inauthentic, but as inextricably part of human existence. The audience is drawn into the fictional world of these plays as its members are able to identify with the disillusionment of the characters and their inability to form a definitive view of each other. Simultaneously, the audience is ousted from the fictional world by being reminded of the author’s presence through metatheatrical devices. These plays take advantage of the fictional status of theatre to explore issues of authenticity, positioning them in direct opposition to postdramatic and verbatim plays. / Afrikaans & Theory of Literature / D. Cette thèse de doctorat a pour objet l’édition critique, la traduction et l’analyse de l’oeuvre théâtrale complète de François de Cortète (1585-1667). Ce seigneur agenais a évolué dans l’entourage d’Adrien de Monluc, mécène et protecteur de nombreux auteurs de langue française et de langue occitane. Le théâtre de Cortète, partiellement édité après sa mort par ses fils, présente deux pastorales qui se distinguent par un certain « souci de réalité » dans la représentation des bergers mis en scène sur les terres dont il est le seigneur. La Miramondo explore les règles d’unités ; dans son Ramonnet Cortète reprend l’éthnotype comique du matamore gascon dont il inverse le sens du ridicule en dessinant un des premiers portraits de francimand de la littérature en langue occitane ; Sancho al palays del Duc est une comédie, qui sur le modèle de Guérin de Bouscal, adapte à la scène une dizaine de chapitres du second livre du Quichotte. A l’instar du poète toulousain Pierre Godolin en poésie, Cortète exploite et illustre les ressources de la langue d’oc en produisant une oeuvre théâtrale sur le modèle des créations contemporaines des élites européennes. Ses trois pièces reflètent la richesse et ladiversité de la production théâtrale en France entre les années 1630 et 1650 ainsi que les bouleversements qui la traversent. Cette édition, réalisée à partir des manuscrits autographes, se veut aussi fidèle que possible au texte tout en veillant à préserver sa lisibilité. Elle constitue aussi la première traduction française du théâtre de Cortète de Prades. Aucune indication de datation n’ayant été donnée par l’auteur sur la chronologie de la composition de ses pièces et la bibliographie critique étant extrêmement réduite, l’analyse donnée en introduction aborde les trois pièces de manièretransversale et tente de répondre à cette problématique chronologique tout en précisant et en explorant les principales questions qui définissent la singularité de cette oeuvre. / This doctoral thesis comprises the critical edition, translation and analysis of the entire dramatic oeuvre of François de Cortète (1585-1667). This Agenais lord moved in the circles of Adrien de Monluc, patron and protector of numerous French and Occitan-language writers. Cortète’s plays, in part published posthumously by his sons, include two pastorals distinguished by a certain « concern for reality » in their representation of shepherds living on his seigneurial lands. LaMiramondo explores the three classical unities; in Ramonnet Cortète treats the comic ethnotype of the Gascon braggart (matamore), inverting its ridiculous characteristics by drawing one of the first portraits in Occitan literature of the francimand. A third play, Sancho al palays del Duc, a comedy in the style of Guérin de Bouscal, adapts for the stage a dozen chapters of the second book of Don Quixote. Following the example of the Toulouse poet Pierre Godolin, Cortète exploits the possibilities of the langue d’oc to produce dramatic works in the style of those of Europe’s elite contemporary playwrights. His three plays reflect the richness and diversity of the Theatre in France between 1630 and 1650, as well as the upheavals it lived through. This edition of the texts, based on the original manuscripts, tries to be as faithful as possible to them while preserving their readability. It also constitutes the first French translation of Cortète de Prades’ dramatic oeuvre. In the light of there being no indication of dating by the author of the chronology of composition of his plays and, moreover, thecritical bibliography being extremely small, the analysis undertaken in the introduction approaches the plays transversely and attempts to answer this chronological problem by specifying and exploring the major issues that define the uniqueness of this body of work.
