An analysis of the external thermal field of an extra low profile dozer

14 September 2015 (has links)
M.Phil. / The aim of this research is to study the underhood airflow thermal behaviour of the extra low profile (XLP) dozer due to the excessive heat dissipated and observed during testing sessions executed at ground level, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The motivation of this project is to identify the reasons of poor cooling performance of this equipment, to develop and to demonstrate the capabilities of CFD in thermal research by validating the CFD result with experiments using a scaled model, prior to analyzing the full-scale dozer ...

Cavitation erosion : the effect of fluid and flow parameters

Auret, Johannes Gerhardus January 2016 (has links)
This thesis describes an investigation into the effect of fluid and flow parameters on cavitation dynamics and cavitation erosion. A rotating disc test apparatus was developed fo: dow-type cavitation studies. A vibratory test device was also developed to study the role of cathodic and anodic potentials applied to cavitating bodies. Some major results are given below. Erosion "peaksat about 50°C in water, but under certain conditions material degradation caused by increased corrosion rate cancels out thermodynamic effects at higher temperatures. An erosion peak is also observed as a function of static pressure. Damage increases with velocity until cavitation is fully developed, at which stage the influence of velocity becomes negligible. The changes in erosion zone geometry and mass loss caused by temperature, velocity and pressure variations may be correlated with the effect these parameters have on the cavitation pressure profile. Efforts are described to develop a system for measuring this profile in the rotating disc device. Water quality including dissolved ions, as well as solid and gas impurities, influences both cavitation inception and the amount of cavitation damage caused. The synergism between cavitation erosion and corrosion causes high damage rates in corrosive, cavitating liquids. Solid impurities at medium concentrations may enhance or retard cavitation damage substantially, depending on the physical properties of the solid. Below the saturation level, increasing concentration of dissolved air in water results in a slight decrease in damage, but damage can be almost completely eliminated by the release of air bubbles into the cavitation region. Another important result is that the gas developed by the application of external potentials to a cavitating body provides protection against cavitation erosion through a gas cushioning mechanism. Cathodic protection of cavitating bodies will thus serve to decrease damage rates even in the case of corrosion-resistant materials like stainless / GR 2016

Development of a reconfigurable vibrating screen.

Ramatsetse, Boitumelo. January 2014 (has links)
M. Tech. Industrial Engineering / The ability to respond to changes and uncertainty in production demands currently constitutes a crisis in small and medium scale mining industries in South Africa. The case study of various mining and mineral processing site visits which was carried out revealed that the existing conventional screening methods are not scalable or able to be integrated and have limited processing capacity, which constitutes a high production cost on a long-term basis. In view of this, the Reconfigurable Vibrating Screen machine was designed and manufactured with the intension of eliminating these challenges faced by small and medium scale mining industries. The newly developed vibrating screen utilizes the concept of re-configurability, making it simple to attain full capacity processing production on the same machine. The design of a reconfigurable vibrating screen is based on the idea of enhancing the processing capacity by adjustable width and length of the screen structure with regard to the desired processing output.

Design and Implementation of a Vibration Analysis Tool

Abughannam, Sahar 20 September 2008 (has links)
This thesis work presents the software development stages for a vibration analysis tool developed for a company that produces mining machinery and is interested in monitoring their machines' behaviour. The developed application contributes directly to the field of vibration analysis which is widely applied in many areas nowadays. Such areas include in addition to the mining industry, the automotive industry, and other industries producing rotating machinery. The application developed interfaces with a device designed to acquire vibration data through a three axis acceleration sensor. The device then sends the data wirelessly via Bluetooth technology to a computer on which the application is running. The application then processes the data by applying signal conditioning functions on it. These functions include filtering, Fast and Fourier Transforms. Plots are then generated in order to monitor the machine's behaviour. Additionally, the unfiltered data is logged into a file which allows for playing it back for a more in depth analysis in the future. The application also provides a reporting system that generates reports providing a summary of the machine's behaviour and recommendations for adjusting the machine in order to obtain a better performance. This application provides the company with a reliable and practical way of monitoring their machines, and acts as a solid base for future research that could involve diagnostics and control. / Thesis / Master of Applied Science (MASc)
