‘Forgotten Europeans’: transnational minority activism in the age of European integrationSmith, D.J., Germane, M., Housden, Martyn 15 February 2018 (has links)
Yes / This article examines transnational activism by coalitions of national minorities in Europe from the early 20th century to the present, setting this within the broader ‘security versus democracy dilemma’ that continues to surround international discussions on minority rights. Specifically, we analyse two organisations – the European Nationalities Congress (1925–1938) and the Federal Union of European Nationalities (1949–) – which, while linked, have never been subject to a detailed comparison based on primary sources. In so far as comparisons do exist, they present these bodies in highly negative terms, as mere fronts for inherently particularistic nationalisms that threaten political stability, state integrity and peace. Our more in‐depth analysis provides a fresh and more nuanced perspective: it shows that, in both cases, concepts of European integration and ‘unity in diversity’ have provided the motivating goals and frameworks for transnational movements advocating common rights for all minorities and seeking positive interaction with the interstate world.

Suicidal ideation and suicide attempt rates are far higher among gender minority individuals than in the general population. In the wake of an unprecedented number of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation being proposed and passed in 2023 in the United States, this study sought to examine the impact of this legislation on gender minority stress and suicidal desire and intent among gender minority adults. Results indicated that anxiety about the legislation was associated with the desire to die, perceived burdensomeness, thwarted belongingness, and the likelihood of attempting suicide in the future. The perceived impact of the legislation was associated with intent to die and thwarted belongingness. Knowledge of the legislation being proposed or passed in their state was associated with anxiety about legislation and its perceived impact on them. Awareness of laws passed in their state was also associated with distal and proximal factors of gender minority stress. Distal stress factors were also associated with the perceived impact of the legislation. Taken together, these results suggest that the discriminatory legislation is negatively impacting the mental well-being of gender minority individuals across the United States and may put them at greater risk for suicidal thoughts.

Introduction: The under-representationo f minority ethnic staff groups within the clinical psychology profession has been a serious area of concern for some time. Central to these concerns has been the questionable ability of the profession to adequately address, provide for and meet the needs of an increasingly diverse multi-racial and multi-ethnic society, for whom the utilisation of clinical psychology services are extremely poor. Literature review: The literature review indicated that minority ethnic groups were generally marginalized and excluded from clinical psychology services on a number of different levels, due to a combination of referral conventions, professional misunderstandings of psychological distress, the limitations of conceptual frameworks and cultural factors. Research report: Given the profession's lack of success in attracting and recruiting staff from minority ethnic groups, this thesis was undertaken to: (a) explore the perceptions of clinical psychology held by different ethnic groups, using psychology undergraduates as the target population and (b) investigated their intention or otherwise to pursue a future career in clinical psychology, using the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) as a model. The results showed the TPB to be predictive of intention in all cases. However, for the minority ethnic groups, there were significantly more perceptions of disadvantage in pursing clinical psychology, as there were the factors that would deter them from entering the profession. Methodological limitations of the study, practical implications and directions for future research are discussed. Critical appraisal: An appraisal of the research process is presented, concluding with salient learning points for the future.

Heterosexist Harassment and Rejection, Emotional Social Support and Perceived Stress in a Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual SampleFritz, Sarah-Mee Hesse 12 1900 (has links)
The minority stress theory suggests LGBs experience greater stress levels due to their sexual minority identities; thus, they are more prone to psychological distress. Poor mental health is linked to internalized homophobia and heterosexism. However, affirmative social support may mitigate the stress response via the buffering hypothesis. My model posits that LGBs are more likely to report perceived stress; however, affirmative social support can mitigate stress. I investigated the relationship between perceived stress and sexual minority identity. I explored the relationship between heterosexism, emotional support and perceived stress and the moderating role of social support in my LGB sample. I conducted a hierarchical linear regression to test my model, which accounted for 29% of the variance in perceived stress. Heterosexism and emotional support were significantly associated with perceived stress. I failed to find a moderating role of emotional support. Limitations, strengths, future research and implications are discussed.

The Minority Game is a multiple-agent model of inevitable frus- tration arising in such situations. It is analytically tractable using the replica method originated in statistical physics of spin glasses. We generalised the Mi- nority Game introducing heterogenous agents. This heterogeneity causes a con- siderable decrease of an average agent's frustration. For many configurations, we achieve even a positive-sum game, which is not possible in the original game variant. This result is in accordance with real stock market data. Minority small business owners significantly contribute to national and local economies. Only 50% of small firm owners sustain their businesses longer than 5 years. The purpose of the multiple case study was to explore the management strategies that minority small business owners used to sustain their businesses for longer than 5 years. The study's population consisted of 4 minority small business owners in the midwestern region of the United States to explore management strategies necessary for maintaining minority small firm operations. The conceptual framework for the study was general system theory. Data sources included semistructured interviews, social media information, company documentation, and company website information. Based on the methodological triangulation of the data sources, analytical coding, and analyzing the data using a qualitative data analysis software, 3 themes emerged: networking with other small business owners, strategic planning, and building strong customer and employee relationships. The study findings might contribute to positive social change by providing knowledge about effective management strategies to minority small firm owners, thereby creating jobs, augmenting local and national economies, and increasing profitability.

This thesis examines the media representations of Chien-Ming Wang, a Taiwanese baseball player who played for the New York Yankees, in American and Taiwanese print media from 2005 to 2009. Wang had been attracting media attention in both the United States and in Taiwan during the time because of his athletic performance and dual identities in the two places. The results show that the Taiwanese media usually placed heavy emphasis on his national identity, making him one of the most high-profile athletes in Taiwan. On the other hand, as a foreign player and an Asian athlete, his racial identity was sometimes the focus of the American media. While he had been generally portrayed in a positive way, his Asian identity is still well-scrutinized. I argue that his media representations in the United States fit the model minority discourse which remains the typical perception in the US, meaning that stereotypical characteristics of Asians or Asian Americans are emphasized or overrepresented.
