Como a intensidade de pastejo determina a heterogeneidade espacial da vegetação e suas implicações em um sistema integrado de produção agropecuária / How does grazing intensity determine vegetation spatial heterogeneity and its implications for an integrated crop-livestock system

Nunes, Pedro Arthur de Albuquerque January 2016 (has links)
Spatial heterogeneity induced by grazing has been recognized as a crucial component to the ecosystems sustainable management. Even so, most of the interventions made by humans tend to homogenize the environments, including animal management. In this study, we investigated the effect of grazing intensity on vegetation spatial heterogeneity and creation of an optimal structure for maximizing animals intake rate, and the implications for an Integrated Crop-Livestock System (ICLS). The experiment was carried out during winter 2015, in the Rio Grande do Sul state, Southern Brazil, in a long-term experimental protocol implemented in 2001. Treatments were arranged in a randomized complete block design with three replicates and consisted of different grazing intensities by steers on Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and black oat (Avena strigosa Schreb.) mixed pastures: intensive grazing (P10), moderate grazing (P20), moderate-light grazing (P30), light grazing (P40) and absence of grazing (NG). Vegetation spatial heterogeneity increased with decreasing grazing intensities. Greater heterogeneity and spatial dependence were identified in July, during both forage species growing season. The flowering initiation caused a decrease in spatial dependence and an increase in small scale spatial heterogeneity (nugget effect). P10 showed a spatially homogeneous canopy throughout the grazing cycle, composed mostly by an excessively grazed vegetation (<10 cm). P20 showed higher participation of optimal heights for maximizing the intake rate (15 to 29,99 cm) throughout the grazing cycle. Increasing grazing intensity also increased stocking rate (SR, P<0,05) and liveweight gain per area (LWG, P<0,05). Moderate grazing intensity (P20) showed higher average daily gain (ADG, P<0,05) compared to intensive grazing (P10), without difference, however, from P30 and P40. Therefore, the utilization of moderate grazing intensities is the best alternative to reconcile productivity and environmental conservation in ICLS.

Foam fractionation of surfactant-protein mixtures

Kamalanathan, Ishara Dedunu January 2015 (has links)
Foam fractionation is an adsorptive bubble separation technology that has shown potential as a replacement to the more costly and non-sustainable traditional downstream processing methods such as solvent extraction and chromatography for biological systems. However biological systems mostly tend to be a mixture of surface active species that complicates the foam fractionation separation. In this thesis a detailed experimental study on the application of foam fractionation to separate a well-defined surfactant-protein mixture was performed with emphasis on the competitive adsorption behaviour and transport processes of surfactant-protein mixtures in a foam fractionation process. Surface tension and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements showed that nonionic surfactant Triton X−100 maximum surface pressure, surface affinity and diffusivity were a factor of 2.05, 67.0 and 19.6 respectively greater than that of BSA. Thus Triton X−100 dominated the surface adsorption at an air-water surface by diffusing to the surface and adsorbing at the surface faster than BSA. This competitive adsorption behaviour was observed in foam fractionation experiments performed for Triton X−100/BSA mixtures for different feed concentration ratios and air flow rates. The recovery and enrichment of Triton X−100 were found to increase and decrease respectively with increasing air flow rate for all foam fractionation experiments as expected for a single component system. However the recovery and enrichment of BSA were both found to increase with increasing air flow rate for high feed concentrations of Triton X−100.Bubble size measurements of the foamate produced from foam fractionation experiments showed that at steady state conditions the bubbles rising from the liquid pool were stabilised by BSA. However at the top of the column the recovery of Triton X−100 in the foamate (75% to 100%) was always greater than the recovery of BSA (13% to 76%) for all foam fractionation experiments. In addition, for high feed concentrations of both components and at low air flow rates, the enrichment of BSA remained at almost unity for most experiments and only increased when the recovery of Triton X−100 reached 100%. Thus it was concluded that Triton X-100 displaced the adsorbed BSA from the surface. The foam drainage properties of Triton X−100/BSA mixtures were characterised using two methods; forced foam drainage and from pressure profiles of steady state foam fractionation experiments (pressure method). The drainage data from the forced foam drainage was found not to be compatible with experimental foam fractionation results, by indicating that stable foam was not produced during the foam fractionation experiments. However stable foam was repeatedly produced during foam fractionation experiments. The drainage data from the pressure method was found to be in close agreement to experimental foam fractionation experiments. The work in this thesis takes a significant step beyond the literature experimental foam fractionation studies for multicomponent systems. In addition to investigating the effect of foam fractionation process parameters on the separation of mixed systems, the results from the characterisation studies of surface adsorption and foam properties provided insight and deeper understanding of the competitive adsorption behaviour of surfactants and proteins in a foam fractionation process.

ASCE 7–05 Design Rule for Relative Strength in a Tall Buckling-Restrained Braced Frame Dual System

Aukeman, Lisa J 01 March 2011 (has links) (PDF)
In mid- to high-rise structures, dual systems (DS) enable a structural designer to satisfy the stringent drift limitations of current codes without compromising ductility. Currently, ASCE 7-05 permits a variety of structural systems to be used in combination as a dual system yet the design requirements are limited to the following statement: Moment frames must be capable of resisting 25% of the seismic forces while the moment frames and braced frames or shear walls must be capable of resisting the entire seismic forces in proportion to their relative rigidities. This thesis assesses the significance of the 25% design requirement for the secondary moment frames (SMF) in dual systems with consideration of current structural engineering practice. Three 20-story buckling-restrained braced frame (BRBF) dual system structures were designed with varying relative strengths between the braced and special moment frame systems. The SMF system wa designed for 15%, 25%, and 40% of seismic demands and the BRBF system design has been adjusted accordingly based on its relative stiffness with respect to the moment frame. These structures were examined with nonlinear static and nonlinear dynamic procedures with guidance from ASCE 41-06. The drift, displacement and ductility demands, and the base shear distribution results of this study show similar responses of the three prototype structures. These results indicate a secondary moment frame designed to less than 25% of seismic demands may be adequate for consideration as a dual system regardless of the 25% rule.

Méthode adaptative de contrôle logique et de test de circuits AMS/FR / Adaptive logical control and test of AMS/RF circuits

Khereddine, Rafik 07 September 2011 (has links)
Analogue-mixed-signal (AMS) and Radio frequency (RF) devices are required in many applications such as communications, multimedia, and signal processing. These applications are often subject to severe area constraints. The complexity of AMS and RF cores, together with shrinking device dimensions limit accessibility to the internal nodes of the circuit. This makes the test and the control of this circuit very difficult. Ensuring high test/control quality at low cost for these AMS and RF designs has become an important challenge for test engineers. RF and AMS cores are generally incorporated in a chip including large digital components as microprocessors and memories. The main idea of this work is to develop for these components simple test and control methods which can be implemented in the embedded resources of the system at low cost. The proposed techniques use autoregressive models for the devices under test/control. These models take into account the specific nonlinearities to such devices. Only the behavioural model parameters of the system are used to predict the system performances which are necessary to develop the test signature and/or control the consumption of the circuit. This method is implemented on a dsPiC30f for testing and controlling two demonstrators: a front-end RF card, designed in RMS group of TIMA laboratory, and a MMA7361L 3 axis accelerometer.
