Buildings are designed and built to house a specific program for a set period of time. The end of a building's life marks a change in its use. In today's building practices, some building owners opt to demolish an entire building prior to constructing a new one. Unfortunately, this world-wide attitude results in the production of millions of tons of waste every year and is not an ecologically sustainable practice.
However, as green building methods become more valued in today's society, building owners and designers are becoming more conscious of buildings' end lives. Construction methods are increasingly involving concepts of designing for disassembly, wherein parts and materials can be easily taken apart for reuse or recycling. Such practices are vital in minimizing the unnecessary production of construction waste.
Everything on earth exhibits change. This thesis explores the development of a newly constructed building and its transformation at the end of its life into a new building. The project consists of two designs; the program of the first was predetermined while the program of the second was chosen by the committee at the concluding stage of the first design.
This thesis seeks to develop a position on architectural design and construction methods that acknowledges the fact that buildings are not permanent objects and that they will, at some point in time, change. / Master of Architecture

How can I design a good building?
There are some buildings and some places that feel so alive and beautiful, and make me want to stay there forever. Is there any method I can use so that I can design one of them?
The main goal of my thesis was to find the answer to that simple question. Supposedly an answer lies in the pattern language developed by Christopher Alexander to allow anyone to design a building that feels alive, and has a special quality that makes buildings and places beautiful. I developed my thesis to use his pattern language to design a 12-story mixed-use -- retail, office, and residential -- project located in downtown Washington, D.C. at 1000 Connecticut Avenue, NW. My thesis introduces the theory and methodology of pattern language, narrates the process of the project development, and presents the resulting building. It also includes the challenges I faced and, with the benefit of hindsight, my further reflections on the project, as well as a brief introduction to the area for further study. Bridging is considered as a formal, spatial, referential, and tectonic articulation of connectedness between architecture and context. The question is probed through a mixed architectural program situated in the interstice of an urban downtown and residential neighborhood.
The architecture originates from singular or hybridized combinations of these characteristics:
whereas formal defines the compositional relationships through, for example, orientation, grids, scales, proportions, and contrast or balance among the parts;
whereas spatial indicates a gradient of boundaries established through anchoring, intersecting, overlapping, projecting, interlocking, and parallel elements;
whereas referential draws connections through an interpretation of distinct characteristics from the present, past, and future environmental context; and

Louis Kahn, the master of modern architecture, said, "Even a brick wants to be something " the phrase explained how important it is to respect the properties and materials, each material has a structure or form that can be the most beautiful to express its essence.
The reason that he taught the essence of materials by using "brick" as an example among numerous materials the characteristics of bricks are very simple and clear. The essence of the brick lies in 'stacking'. The stone and metal panels which can be found as common as bricks, the surface forms are smooth, but it held by various types of material.
The surface materials require separate devices to overcome gravity instead of forming a large surface at a time. Architecture is the site where human technology overcomes the providence of nature. However, brick is not 'attached' material, its 'stacked' material. A piece of brick is placed and laid on, depending on gravity.
The nature of bricks goes hand in hand with the history of mankind and is loved a lot. "Architecture is a poem written in light and brick," and brick can be a material that makes use of the essence of architecture: practicality and art.
In fact, that the most common building around us is a brick building is evidence that the brick is imprinted with familiar and reliable materials for everyone. Moreover, the bricks are an inexpensive and fast-producing material.
In this thesis, I 'd like to propose the housing for elderly residents on the Robinson North Terminal at the Potomac waterfront in Alexandria Virginia. Not only do they account for more than 50% of the total US consumption, but consumer dispositions also vary. Robinson Terminal North was built in the early 1730's west's point. It was an important marine settlement in the 18th century for marine ships. This site, which is now threadbare, has a lot of historical importance and has a great potential. Robinson Terminal North, which is owned by the Washington Post, is halved by Union Street and currently made up warehouses, a nearly 40,000 square foot pier, and the terminates of a rail line. Redevelopment of the site has been planned for scores of years. In keeping up with the goals of this Plan to encourage public access and delight of the waterfront, land uses in the renewal Robinson Terminal North should be active and productive place.

The following thesis presents the design for a housing complex. The complex provides homes for two different segments of our population: single families and older or disabled persons and couples.
Located in Old Town Alexandria Virginia, the project sits on the banks of the Potomac River.
The question of integration is central to this thesis. The first design challenge is to integrate the older persons and persons with disabilities into the community. Successfully done, this will prevent the sense of separation and isolation that can often result when people's physical limitations restrict their access to the world around them. The second design challenge is to integrate the complex itself into an existing, homogenous Old Town Alexandria neighborhood. / Master of Architecture

A presente pesquisa teve como objetivo analisar o tema do edifício multifuncional na cidade contemporânea de São Paulo, e foi conduzida pela hipótese de que para cada uma das novas centralidades que se constituíram historicamente na cidade, a solução de inserção urbana do edifício multifuncional assumiu características específicas, decorrentes de variáveis representadas pelas características morfológicas do tecido urbano; pelo modelo de cidade contido nos planos urbanísticos ou nas obras viárias que engendraram a consolidação de tais centralidades, e ainda de acordo com o parâmetros contidos códigos ou na legislação de parcelamento, uso e ocupação do solo vigentes. A compreensão deste quadro evolutivo, e o deslocamento das contribuições resultantes de tal análise para o âmbito das propostas apresentadas pelo Plano Diretor Estratégico de São Paulo (PDE 2014), desdobrou-se em uma hipótese complementar: de que a retomada da solução do edifício multifuncional no contexto dos Eixos de Estruturação da Transformação Urbana (ZEU), deverá reconhecer as particularidades deste território da cidade, com destaque aos padrões de inserção urbana e do modelo de cidade contidos nos elementos que compõem a atual rede de mobilidade, bem como os aspectos morfológicos que os contituem. / This project\'s goal is to analyse the mixed-use building theme in the contemporary city of São Paulo. The project has been conducted by the hypothesis that for each and single one of the new centralities that were historically constituted in this particular city, the urban insertion solution of the multifunctional building has taken specific characteristics that come from variables represented by the morphological features of the urban fabric. Such as the city model contained in the urbanization plans or in the roadworks that had engendered the consolidation of such centralities, and yet in the codes and installment legislation, soil usage and its ocupation. The comprehension of this evolutionary scenario and the analyses\' contributions that were deslocated to the proposals\' scope presented by the Plano Diretor Estratégico de São Paulo (São Paulo\'s Strategic Master Plan - PDE 2014) have unfolded into a complementary hypothesis: that the resumption of the mixed-use building solution in the context of the Structure Pivots of the Urban Transformation (ZEU - Eixos de Estruturação da Transformação Urbana) should recognize the particularities of this city\'s territory, focusing on the urban insertion patterns and the city model contained in the elements that compose the current mobility net, as well as the morphological aspects that constitute those territories.
