Disassembly sequence planning for product maintenance

Environmental and sustainable issues have brought more and more attention to industries in product design and manufacturing. It is important for a product to meet its lifecycle requirements in repairing, replacing and recycling. Disassembly is required in product maintenance and recycling. An efficient disassembly plan can reduce the cost of product maintenance and minimize the product repair time. This thesis introduces an efficient method for selective disassembly planning for the need of product maintenance and recycling to reduce the product operation time and cost. The method is based on an efficient product representation and effective sequence searching. It considers the product structure, removing direction of components, operation constraints and complex in the product representation and sequencing planning. Examples are used to verify the proposed method. Challenges and further work are also discussed.

Disassembly Sequence Planning for End-of-Life Products

Nowadays, manufactures are under tremendous pressure to dispose product in an environmentally responsible way to pursue a sustainable development. Disassembly operations are required in the product recycling and maintenance period. An optimal disassembly sequence can reduce the disassembly cost and time. This thesis proposes an efficient method for selective disassembly sequence planning (DSP). The proposed method includes two main aspects: product representation and sequence searching. Multi-level constraint matrices based on product’s bill of material (BOM) are constructed. This representation approach can identify the product’s hierarchical structure to reduce the searching size of the sequence plans. Traversal algorithm and genetic algorithm are used to search the desired disassembly sequence. A disassembly feasibility check is integrated in the genetic algorithm to generate a better disassembly sequence with a less searching time. Several case studies are used to verify the proposed algorithms. In addition, destructive disassembly operations are considered to remove those constraints that cannot be removed by the non-destructive disassembly. / May 2016

The architecture of the sports stadium has evolved dramatically throughout its history. From the ancient gladiatorial arenas to the domes and retractable-roof ballparks of the 20th Century, the stadium has become an iconic and integral part of life, in our modern society. Through the globalization of sports and sporting events, such as the Olympics and World Cup, new and more exciting opportunities are being extended to those who, historically, have been without the resources or infrastructural means to support such endeavors. However, for all the excitement and optimism that accompanies the initial design and planning, the actual development of the necessary structures and support systems rarely provides the expected return on what, ultimately, becomes a staggering investment of time, money, and labor. In fact, operators have found it nearly impossible to provide for the continued operation, maintenance, and regular occupation of these facilities, thus resulting in an overwhelming burden on the local community. It is the purpose of this thesis to provide a survey of architectural precedents from selected mega-events of the last 100 years, as well as a number of other contemporary stadium projects, in an effort to fully convey the magnitude and relevancy of this issue, to identify industry trends and practical models, and more definitively present the need for an alternative approach to design. Additionally, a proposal will be put in place for more of a focus on modularity and prefabrication, in order to transform the Olympic or World Cup stadium into a less permanent element within the urban landscape. It is the hope that the systemic issues, currently associated with hosting international sporting events, may be remedied through the architecture, and ultimate disassembly, of the 21st Century stadium. Ultimately, the goal is to reduce the negative impact of such undertakings, and to aid in the realization of the inherent potential for positive change therein.

The key theme of this research document is the negative impact of an increasingly expanding motor vehicle industry. The urban infrastructure and dependence on individual transportation has become an integral part of everyday life for many. Continual growth in the numbers of new automobiles within cities has resulted in the disposal of old and broken (end-of-life) automobiles. This dissertation investigates the potential of industrial architecture in assisting with the regulation of waste management through adaptive re-use of lost spaces and materials. The main objectives include recycling, recycling-awareness and education, re-use of materials, architecture promoting low embodied energy products, the production of energy and social consolidation. Due to the high embodied energy of automobiles, the different range of materials used and the availability of discarded automobiles found within the surrounding industrial area of Pretoria West, a study of the recycling of automobiles will form the central theme for this dissertation. In this thesis, we deal with the demand driven disassembly planning. The main aim of the study is to construct heuristic approaches according to the suggested improvements in the literature. These heuristic approaches are further improved by recognizing the key points of the disassembly planning problem. All of the solution approaches aim minimizing total cost related to relevant costs of disassembly operations. Another subject given attention in this thesis is the importance of the setup cost on the disassembly planning, which has not been studied yet in the literature to the best of our knowledge. Computational studies are carried out to assess the performance of the heuristic procedures proposed.

Selection and evaluation of joint types and joining processes for concurrent assembly/disassembly-based design

In designing products, Design-for-Assembly (DFA) has been successfully used for several decades to reduce lead times, processing times, and equipment overhead. Though the DFA approach results in products which are easy and efficient to assemble, such products may be difficult to disassemble and/or may adversely affect the environment. These environmental concerns resulted in the Design-for-Disassembly (DFD) approach, which stresses ease-of-disassembly and environmental compatibility. However, when applied independently of DFA, DFD underestimates the importance of assembly, and consequently can result in increased assembly time and cost. Design-for-Assembly may thus have negative repercussions on disassembly, and vice-versa. Consequently, in order to minimize assembly/disassembly time and cost and maximize component reusability, designers must implement DFA and DFD simultaneously when designing products. In this research, such an approach is developed. The approach, called Concurrent Assembly/Disassembly-Based Design (CAD²), consists of simultaneously selecting joint types and joining processes for products, based upon both assembly and disassembly requirements. Two objectives are considered: the minimization of total assembly/disassembly time or cost. In addition, a ‘penalty score’ measure is developed to quantify the environmental impact (recyclability) associated with any solution. Total enumeration is used to solve these minimization problems. The CAD² approach is demonstrated and evaluated by comparing it with both DFA and DFD for a limited number of cases. The results indicate that the CAD² approach can give better solutions (total time and total cost) than either DFA or DFD. / Master of Science

Kunskapsbidraget bidrar med kunskap om hur en emotionell koppling till produkter i kombination med Design for disassembly kan skapa en mer hållbar framtid genom att användaren konsumerar färre hela produkter. Uppsatsen avlutas med en diskussion som lyfter svårigheterna med individualiteten av emotionell design, stil, tycke och smak. / The essay examines with the help of theory, co-creation, emotional design, sustainable design, and design for disassembly how you can create sustainable headphones from a repair and upgrade perspective.
