On the Enhancement of Audio and Video in Mobile Equipment

Rossholm, Andreas January 2006 (has links)
Use of mobile equipment has increased exponentially over the last decade. As use becomes more widespread so too does the demand for new functionalities. The limited memory and computational power of many mobile devices has proven to be a challenge resulting in many innovative solutions and a number of new standards. Despite this, there is often a requirement for additional enhancement to improve quality. The focus of this thesis work has been to perform enhancement within two different areas; audio or speech encoding and video encoding/decoding. The audio enhancement section of this thesis addresses the well known problem in the GSM system with an interfering signal generated by the switching nature of TDMA cellular telephony. Two different solutions are given to suppress such interference internally in the mobile handset. The first method involves the use of subtractive noise cancellation employing correlators, the second uses a structure of IIR noth filters. Both solutions use control algorithms based on the state of the communication between the mobile handset and the base station. The video section of this thesis presents two post-filters and one pre-filter. The two post-filters are designed to improve visual quality of highly compressed video streams from standard, block-based video codecs by combating both blocking and ringing artifacts. The second post-filter also performs sharpening. The pre-filter is designed to increase the coding efficiency of a standard block based video codec. By introducing a pre-processing algorithm before the encoder, the amount of camera disturbance and the complexity of the sequence can be decreased, thereby increasing coding efficiency.

Design sem fronteiras:  a relação entre o nomadismo e a sustentabilidade / Design without borders: the relation between nomadism and sustainability

Barbosa, Lara Leite 22 January 2009 (has links)
The thesis aims to articulate nomadism and sustainability through design. The hypothesis aims to confirm that nomadism and sustainability are closely related and tries to understand how designer can incorporate these principles in work process. It reflects about sustainability issues and nomadic behavior, accoding to the theoretical referencial of the contributions of authors such as Bernard Rudofsky, Ezio Manzini, Felix Guatari, Gilles Deleuze, Michel Maffesoli, Paul Zumthor, Robert Kronenburg, Teshome Gabriel, Victor Papanek amongst others, under the optics of design. The thesis includes results of interviews, carried through in Brazil and abroad, with specialists and architects who work and experience the thematic searched. It has a survey to identify and to analyze design solutions to inhabit a world where the necessity for dislocation has become more and more recurrent. The proposals for mobile and adaptable dwellings go beyond usual categories, therefore, design without borders crosses the limits between architecture and design to hybrid forms that wanders between buildingvehicles; furnituretools; garmentequipment. The five chapters are divided by theme in categories To go away; To recognize the place, To know the others; To catch resources; To define duration; To go back providing a range of keys for interpretation of the nomadic journey. The goal of the thesis is to generate innovative design directions that consider the contemporaries forms of nomadic life, respecting the environmental requirements. These design directions are presented in the conclusion, as suggestions for designers.

Principles of implementation : a comparative analysis of the Cape Town Convention's remedies

Traschler, Thomas January 2017 (has links)
The Cape Town Convention and the Aircraft Protocol came into force on 1st March 2006. To date, the Convention has seventy-four States Parties, the Aircraft Protocol sixty-eight States Parties, and together they can be regarded as one of the most successful recent commercial law treaties. The Convention's overriding object is to offer creditors the highest possible protection in the form of an effective, speedy and strong legal remedial framework for the international enforcement of creditors rights in the event of the debtor's default or insolvency. The underlying rationale is that this will lead to significant reductions in borrowings costs for lenders to the advantage of all interested stakeholders in the aircraft sector. However, without effective implementation of the remedial system of the Convention and the Aircraft Protocol, it is difficult for financiers to have confidence that they are able to defend their legal rights effectively. This thesis investigates the structure and contents of the Convention's remedial system in a chronological order, but it does not purport to be a comprehensive and systematic monograph on the Convention's remedies as already done by the Convention's Official Commentary. It consists of four parts each of which investigates a particular core aspect of the implementation and operation of the Convention's remedial system in practice. In particular, it investigates the Convention's declaration system, and its procedural, substantive and insolvency remedies to ensure an effective and comprehensive protection of creditors in aircraft finance. In doing so, it identifies critical lessons for the implementation of the treaty in civil and common law jurisdictions.

Hardened Registration Process for Participatory Sensing

Borsub, Jatesada January 2018 (has links)
Participatory sensing systems need to gather information from a largenumber of participants. However, the openness of the system is a doubleedgedsword: by allowing practically any user to join, the system can beabused by an attacker who introduces a large number of virtual devices. This work proposes a hardened registration process for participatory sensingto raise the bar: registrations are screened through a number of defensivemeasures, towards rejecting spurious registrations that do not correspondto actual devices. This deprives an adversary from a relatively easytake-over and, at the same time, allows a flexible and open registrationprocess. The defensive measures are incorporated in the participatorysensing application.
