Best practises in new product development : the Zyray Wireless case study

Koekemoer, Philip 14 October 2005 (has links)
A case study of a start-up company was performed. The study analysed the New Product Development Process at the start-up. The start-up under investigation was Zyray Wireless, a start-up in San Diego California. Zyray makes processors for the next generation of mobile phones. The research done with the particular start-up company will identify what the differences are between generally accepted best practise methods and the best practise methods implemented by a particular start-up company. The study will therefore aim to answer the following questions. How does the product development process change over the life cycle of the company? How do the best practise processes implemented in the industry differ from those implemented during the life cycle of the company under investigation. Why does the company implement best practise processes at a specific time in its life cycle and not during other times? What percentage of best practise processes are accepted and implemented by the company, why were they chosen and why were others not. Multiple types of evidence were used including participant observations, documentation and surveys. The survey taken at Zyray was compared with the industry averages. Results were also obtained at three different points in time (Concept/Seed, Product Development and Market phases). By comparing these results with the industry results it was possible to gauge the differences between the industry and Zyray Wireless in general. Zyray Wireless scored above the industry average in the following categories: continuous quality improvement, product success, project success, cycle time improvement, customer involvement questions, project selection, product strategy questions, technological leadership and product goal questions. The best practises for metrics, human resource development, documentation and change control implemented by Zyray Wireless scored at or below the industry average. The best practise results showed that the start-up focused more on strategy and engineering and less on process control. The study revealed the following important points: 1. In the initial phases the start-up’s customers were the venture funds. 2. The project selection process was informal but driven by economic criteria. 3. The company discovered that it had to choose a product strategy early on and then develop the product according to this strategy. 4. Marketing created the design concept but it also influenced the future of the company because it dictated the company’s product strategy. 5. The company followed a technology follower strategy. The technological competency was of such a high standard that a product was developed after very few iterations. 6. The start-up showed that internal documentation was limited but that external documentation to clients and manufacturers had to be of a high standard. 7. The company showed that change control was limited to the engineering function. 8. The start-up showed that over-achieving on goals set by itself and investors was of critical importance. 9. The start-up showed that process control was kept to a minimum and that it could react very quickly to changing situations. 10. The start-up showed that the establishment of a strong team is of critical importance to the success of the company. / Dissertation (MSc Technology Management)--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Graduate School of Technology Management (GSTM) / unrestricted

The use of mobile phone advertising as an effective medium to reach the South African urban bottom of the pyramid

Mesquita, Victor 21 July 2012 (has links)
This research study investigates the requirements or factors that will influence the acceptance and impact of mobile phone advertising to the urban Bottom of Pyramid (BoP). The framework incorporated awareness, availability, acceptability and convenience as factors for effective mobile phone advertising. Mobile phones have received unprecedented penetration rates across all markets, including LSM 1-4. This presents companies targeting this market with an excellent advertising medium with which to communicate to consumers. Companies have begun advertising via mobile phone and this research investigates the impact of this advertising, in relation to other more established mediums, as well as the most optimal mobile phone service to be used in delivery of the advertising message. The type of advertising being sent to BoP via mobile phone advertising is analysed, along with the type of advertising the urban BoP market would like to receive and possible differences identified. The research examines the recall of advertising message across various advertising media and comparisons are drawn. The research found that all aspects of the framework were applicable. Convenience and acceptability were seen as the highest drivers for effective mobile phone advertising to the South African urban BoP. / Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) / unrestricted

White, Rebecca J., Zullig, Keith J., Lander, Laura, Shockley, Clara, Pack, Robert, Sullivan, Carl 01 January 2012 (has links)
The West Virginia Prescription Drug Abuse Quitline (WVPDAQ) is a resource that offers education and support to individuals and families affected by prescription drug abuse. The WVPDAQ began functioning September 11, 2008, through the use of mobile phone and laptop technology. Although some helplines and quitlines use some aspects of remote technology, most function through traditional call center and landline technology, making the WVPDAQ unique. This article describes the process evaluation of the WVPDAQ and outlines both the positive findings and challenges faced by the WVPDAQ. Lessons learned and future recommendations for remote quitline endeavors are also presented. It is hoped that the experiences and information regarding the WVPDAQ presented can provide best-practice insight for public health practitioners and evaluation personnel who are considering using alternative technologies to deliver quitline services.

En kvalitativ studie om vilka mjukvaruproblem som leder till en förkortad livslängd för mobiltelefoner

Arréhn Ågren, Oscar, Nymansson, Olof January 2019 (has links)
Today, a large part of the population owns a mobile phone. These are manufactured, consumed and disposed to a large extent, and the consumption pattern shows a short lifetime for mobile phones. Manufacturing leads to dangerous emissions, and the disposal of mobile phones are not always taken care of in the best way, which causes harm to the environment and nature. Seeing how this is a big problem is the reason to why this study has been carried out. The aim of the study was to identify the categories of software problems that are behind the replacement of mobile phones. In addition, the software’s role in the replacement of mobile phones in relation to social factors and hardware problems was investigated. This was done through a qualitative interview study with a varied selection of twenty people. Identified categories that led to mobile phone replacement are: Hardware damage, Battery, Performance, Other mobile phone, Offer, Discontinued updates, and Storage space. Identified categories for software-related issues include: Performance, User-friendliness, Energy consumption, Bug, Enforced functionality, Inaccessible functionality, and Software size. For future research we suggest quantitative studies for validating our results using a larger, representative sample of respondents.

Parents' perception of technology in a Swedish kindergarten and technostress amongst preschool teachers

Temelkov, Vasil January 2019 (has links)
The new changes in the Swedish curriculum for the educational system demand more digitalization in the kindergartens. However previous studies have shown that the current level of handling technology amongst preschool teachers in Swedish kindergarten is low and may create difficulties in their work. This thesis investigates a kindergarten that wants to implement a mobile app for more transparent and effective communication between preschool teachers and parents. The aims are to highlight the common perceptions and expectations from a parental point of view concerning a mobile app for communication while establishing if the preschool teachers experience technostress at their work. The data were gathered from conducting interviews and one online survey. The main finding of this study was that preschool teachers and parents should be more involved in the process of finding a suitable mobile app so they would be motivated to contribute to better daily communication. This study suggests that the most important strategies for implementing a mobile app for communication are to inform, educate and involve all the concerned parties.

Improving Mobile Phone Banking Usefulness, Usability, Risk, Cost, and Intention to Adopt

Hebie, Ali Parfait 01 January 2017 (has links)
Millions of people use mobile phone banking daily, and business leaders should understand the factors influencing mobile phone banking adoption among users. Based on the theory of technology acceptance model and the innovation diffusion theory, the purpose of this correlational study was to examine the relationship between usefulness, ease of use, risk, cost, and mobile phone banking adoption in Burkina Faso. One hundred and six mobile phone banking users living in the city of Ouagadougou completed the online survey created to measure consumers understanding of mobile phone banking. Results of the multiple linear regression analysis indicated a statistically significant relationship between the predictor variables and mobile phone banking adoption, F(5,101) = 36.07, p < .001. Three of the predictors contributed significantly to the model, with usefulness recording the highest beta value (Ã? = .692), cost the next highest beta value (Ã? = .225), and ease of use the next highest beta value (Ã? = .173). The 4th predictor, risk, did not contribute significantly to the model, recording a negative beta value (Ã? = -.058). Results may enhance local business leaders' understanding of mobile phone banking adoption, which could result in more effective business strategies to increase the affordability, availability, and quality of mobile banking services for Burkina Faso residents. Development of the mobile phone banking industry could enable business leaders to foster access to affordable financial services for individuals and contribute to the development of Burkina Faso's local economy and trade.
