Hanya Holm in America, 1931-1936: Dance, Culture and Community

Randall, Tresa M. January 2008 (has links)
Though she is widely considered one of the "four pioneers" of American modern dance, German-American Hanya Holm (1893-1992) occupies a shadowy presence in dance history literature. She has often been described as someone who fell in love with America, purged her approach of Germanic elements, and emerged with a more universal one. Her "Americanization" has served as evidence of the Americanness of modern dance, thus eclipsing the German influence on modern dance. This dissertation challenges that narrative by casting new light on Holm's worldview and initial intentions in the New World, and by articulating the specifics of the first five years of her American career. In contrast to previous histories, I propose that Holm did not come to the U.S. to forge an independent career as a choreographer; rather, she came as a missionary for Mary Wigman and her Tanz-Gemeinschaft (dance cultural community). To Wigman and Holm, dance was not only an art form; it was a way of life, a revolt against bourgeois sterility and modern alienation, and a utopian communal vision, even a religion. Artistic expression was only one aspect of modern dance's larger purpose. The transformation of social life was equally important, and Holm was a fervent believer in the need for a widespread amateur dance culture. This study uses a historical methodology and accesses traces of the past such as lectures, school reports, promotional material, newspaper articles, personal notebooks, correspondence, photographs, and other material--much of it discussed here for the first time. These sources provide evidence for new descriptions and interpretations of Holm's migration from Germany to the U.S. and from German dance to American dance. I examine cultural contexts that informed Holm's beliefs, such as early twentieth century German life reform and body culture; provide a sustained analysis of the curriculum of the New York Wigman School of the Dance; and consider how the politicization of dance in the 1930s--in both Germany and the U.S.--affected Holm and her work. / Dance

Where dance and drama meet again : aspects of the expressive body in the 20th century

Botha, Estelle 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MDram (Drama))—University of Stellenbosch, 2006. / Acknowledging theatrical styles such as physical theatre, Tanztheater and poor theatre as forms of ‘total theatre’, and recognizing that there has been a prolonged process of development to reach such a point, the first chapter investigates the historical divide between dramatic dance and drama as starting point. Subsequently, in considering the body as expressive medium, the impact of content and form on the training of the performers’ body for the theatrical context is also evaluated.

D'Almeida, Nadya Moretto 07 December 2016 (has links)
This research aims to contribute to the studies on Japanese performing arts in Brazil, broaching the trajectory of the Japanese choreographer, Ishii Kaoru (1932). Born and resident in Tokyo, Kaoru is the last direct pupil of one of the pioneers of modern dance in Japan, Ishii Baku (1886-1962). With over 50 years of career, Kaoru is one of the most experienced artists working actively in her country. Based on the material produced during the field research and the experiences generated from direct contact with the choreographer, this thesis assumes that through the artistic journey of Kaoru it would be possible to address issues related to the creation in dance and performance of the dancer not only in the Japanese context but also within the performing arts in a broad manner. In this way, it hints at the possibility of a research methodology based on researcher-artist experience.

Práticas para a plenitude do corpo : aproximações entre performance, autoria e cura / Practices for the body's plenitude : approaches on performance, authorship and healing

Vieira, Elisa Martins Belém, 1982- 25 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Suzi Frankl Sperber / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Artes / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-25T10:19:19Z (GMT). I point out a possible relationship among performance, authorship and healing. For such a reason, I present the career and the analyses of works of art selected from creators of the art fields, respectively, from the visual arts, dance and theatre: Lygia Clark (BH, MG), Dudude Herrmann (BH, MG) e Enrique Diaz (RJ, RJ). The research showed that the works of those artists concerns about a transformation in the body¿s image. The act of recreating yourself, by the creative action, can be considered in its healing dimension. The concept pulse of fiction, by Sperber, can help to verify the hypothesis. Sperber points out the existence of the "universals" or the "basic knowledges": simbolization, efabulation and imagination. Those aspects that are "available to all and any human being" (SPERBER, 2009, p. 98) should be also awakened. As Sperber shows, since an early age the child feels that is necessary to create, in order to elaborate deep emotions and events experienced.The child evocates his or her own resources, such as the spoken language or body's performance, in the process of creation.This aptitude or necessity to elaborate the event experienced, by means of the fictional creation, is repeated in all ages of the human being. As an action to resist and looking for transformation, it would be necessary to stimulate, in an unrestricted way, the pulse of fiction, practicing authorship. The works of Herrmann, Diaz and Clark, shows in different artistic languages, authorial aspects, and also the value of the individual potential to creation. By means of analyses, some singular aspects of the works of those creators and theirs practices as teachers or directors are shown. The thesis shows relations of similarity and influence among the works of those Brazilian artists with some principles of work from the group Judson Dance Theater, of the 1960¿s, in New York, as well as other practices stimulated by this group such as Viewpoints and Six Viewpoints / Doutorado / Artes da Cena / Doutora em Artes da Cena

Koreodrama u Srbiji u 20. i 21. veku: rodna perspektiva / Choreodrama in Serbia in the 20th and 21th Century: Gender Perspective

Obradović Ljubinković Vera 04 June 2016 (has links)

U tumačenju osobina identiteta četiri odabrane umetnice koristimo holistički teorijski pristup savremenih teorija (poststrukturalni, postmoderni i interkulturalni feminizam), a metodom analize diskursa takav teorijski pristup proveravamo.
1.Vlastitim umetničkim i pedagoškim delovanjem naše četri umetnice doprinele su širenju znanja o igri u Srbiji uopšte, posebno novom poimanju oslobođenog tela (i to ne samo u igri);
2 Njihov doprinos se ogleda u ukupnoj emancipaciji žena (u profesiji, u porodici i dr.);
/
Choreodrama is a form of theatrical dance which insists on the synthesis of different forms of expression: movement, music, word. There is not a unique definition of choreodrama given the time when it appeared on the artistic and social situation in which some strong choreographic personalities have created to this date in the world and Serbia as well. The practical and theoretical dimensions of choreodrama as a separate genre are examined from the standpoint of form which contributes the development of gender studies, especially the discussion on the emancipation of the female body.
The aim of this study is to gather, systematize and interpret information on the development of choreodrama in Serbia during the 20th century and its visible breakthrough in the art of theatre of the 21st century - in order to clearly show the merits of women in the promotion of this theatrical direction.
The hypothesis is that choreodrama has changed attitude towards dance, the attitude towards drama and relationship to the female body.
Contemporary theories of gender pay special attention on the characteristics of women' identity (and men' as well) and interpret it as the emergence of a complex variable content made up of several different components (Duhacek, 2011; 2014). In identity characterics interpreting of four selected artists we use a holistic theoretical approach to contemporary theories (poststructural, postmodern feminism and intercultural feminism) and this theoretical approach can be checked by method of discourse analysis. Such an approach takes into account not only the verbal message, but also the context in which the verbal and non-verbal situations are manifested, as well as interlocutors themselves. Variability of identity is the basis of this theoretical approach, documented in the empirical material of the female artists' lives and work in Serbia in the 20th century.
The research method relies on the analysis of the text or, to be precise, two basic methods (Savić, 1993): analysis of texts and conversation analysis (discourse). The results show that in Serbia mainly female artists of great individuality and education dealt with choreodrama and they were only partly written about in our literature concerning the relationship of gender and choreodrama process of creation, selection of content and affirmation in the public area: Maga Magazinović, Smiljana Mandukić, Nada Kokotović and Sonja Vukicevic.
1.With their personal artistic and pedagogical functioning, our four women artists have contributed to spreading the knowledge about dance in Serbia in general, especially the new understanding of the liberated body (and not only in dance);
2. Their contribution is reflected in the total emancipation of women (in their profession, family, etc.);
3Now it is known that the struggle for women's equality in society was lead simultaneously with the affirmation of the modern dance and choreodrama in Serbia.
4. The work of these four female artists has influenced the work of the creators of a new generation of choreographers in Serbia in the 21st century.
I conclude that there is continuity in the promotion of the choreodrama genre in Serbian theatrical life from the periphery to the center of artistic events.
The research information can be directly incorporated into existing curricula of contemporary art at the Academies of Arts, on the one hand, and in the educational programme of music and theatrical art in secondary schools, on the other hand.

Dancing Theology - A Construction of a Pneumatology of The Body

Kissell, Kristin 01 April 2020 (has links) (PDF)
Dance is the language of the soul. Dance, as a theological source, can remind us of who we are in and with the living perichoresis of the Trinity. Dance, as embodied art, can provide us with a new way of viewing and discussing pneumatology and that we too, in our incarnate reality, participate in perichoresis. Within this work I seek to answer the questions of how dance is a source of theology, why a pneumatology of the body is significant, and how dance provides a framework for a pneumatology of the body. The creation of a pneumatology of the body is a rooting or re-membering of the Spirit and our own spirit in incarnational—skin and bones—reality that includes us in Trinitarian perichoresis. Pneumatology of the body is dancing with the Holy Spirit in our given time and space to retrieve the dignity of our embodied inspirited selves as made in the imago Dei. The gifts and fruits of the Holy Spirit are not abstract concepts. Through dance as embodied art we can move from abstract, intellectual concepts of the Spirit to incarnational truth of our flesh and blood, wounds and joys, where the Trinity dwells within and around.Dance as a source of theology can provide a framework for a pneumtology of the body. The Holy Spirit as relationality holding all of life together is our Holy Bridge. Within this work, we re-member our foundational belief in the interconnectedness of body and soul, and that we too participate in the Trinitarian perichoresis as part of God’s dancing revelation. In a world of division and duality, the Spirit as Holy Bridge brings us back home to the core of who we are individually and collectively, while dance provides a space for honoring difference and duality together in harmony. Dance gives expression to situations and things in our lives that are challenging to grasp conceptually and intellectually, while allowing for the embodied witnessing of a person’s and community’s story.A dancing theology as a framework for a pneumatology of the body reminds us that Spirit is our Holy Bridge between body, senses, feelings, challenges, and transformations, between my body soul temple and your body soul temple, and between individual and communal. By dancing with us in our daily lives, the Holy Spirit draws us ever deeper across loving bridges into communion with Trinitarian perichoresis. The Trinity is the Dance of Life in which the Spirit performs the role of empowering the never-ending communion and relational vitality that is God in and with Godself.

The Evolution of Yeats's Dance Imagery: The Body, Gender, and Nationalism

Lee, Deng-Huei 08 1900 (has links)
Tracing the development of his dance imagery, this dissertation argues that Yeats's collaborations with various early modern dancers influenced his conceptions of the body, gender, and Irish nationalism. The critical tendency to read Yeats's dance emblems in light of symbolist-decadent portrayals of Salome has led to exaggerated charges of misogyny, and to neglect of these emblems' relationship to the poet's nationalism. Drawing on body criticism, dance theory, and postcolonialism, this project rereads the politics that underpin Yeats's idea of the dance, calling attention to its evolution and to the heterogeneity of its manifestations in both written texts and dramatic performances. While the dancer of Yeats's texts follow the dictates of male-authored scripts, those in actual performances of his works acquired more agency by shaping choreography. In addition to working directly with Michio Ito and Ninette de Valois, Yeats indirectly collaborated with such trailblazers of early modern dance as Loie Fuller, Isadora Duncan, Maud Allan, and Ruth St. Denis. These collaborations shed important light on the germination of early modern dance and on current trends in the performative arts. Registering anti-imperialist and anti-industrialist agendas, the early Yeats's dancing Sidhe personify a romantic nationalism that seeks to inspire resistance to the cultural machinery of British colonization. In his middle career, these collective Sidhe transmute into the solitary figure of a bird-woman-witch dancer, who, resembling the soloists of early modern dance, occupies center stage without any support from men and (to some extent) contests patriarchal assumptions. The late Yeats satirizes the imposition of sexual, racial, and religious purity on postcolonial Irish identity by means of Salome-like dances in which "fair" dancers hold the severed heads of "foul" spectators. These dances blur customary socio-political boundaries between fair and foul, classical and grotesque. Early to late, the evolution of Yeats's dancers reflects his gradual incorporation of more innovative female roles partly resembling those created by the pioneers of modern dance.
