This essey examines high school student’s religiosity and their views on religion. This view is later compared with the student’s description of their own faith. The essay uses a qualitative research method where the students are given open questions which they answer freely. The answers are then analyzed by attribution theory, knowledge sociology and the theory of late modern religiosity. This essey shows that students are very inconsistent in their presentation of what they believe compared to how they define their faith. Students also tend to have little confidence in the institutionalized religions and authorities; this gives them an individualized transcendent view on the world. This worldview that is generally influenced by external factors consists of religious influences from many cultures and religions that are mixed together into a personal faith.

Previous issue date: 2011-06-10 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / In this research we seek to show the influence of massive religious phenomenon of Post
modernity on the traditional reformed Protestant churches as the Presbyterian. The main goal
of this work was: Analyze relations of Christians with the sacred in the discursive, practical
utilitarian and spectacular conceptions of postmodern religiosity in a traditional Presbyterian
Church Protestant Christian. The subject of this survey, which was qualitative, were the
leaders of this religious institution, especially pastors and priests. We verify, by interviews
and observations, which many followers of Presbyterian Church are involved or are
contradictory in the acceptance of spectaculars practices and of utilitarian mysticism in its
religious experience. In summary, they practice postmodern religiosity by the fact they think
and live the religion as a consumer product. This influence of the massive religious about
them has led us to see the frequent breaking of religious ethics established within the
Westminster Confession of Faith and the Internal Constitution of Presbyterians from many
followers of this institution. We start from the classic work of Weber (1998), the Protestant
ethic and the spirit of capitalism and resorted to other theorists as Bauman (1997), Lipovetsky
(2007), Frankl (1994 and 1997), Pierucci (2006), Prandi and Pierucci (1996), Eliade (1978
and 1992), Debord (1997) and others who have inspired us in this research.
(1998), A ética protestante e o espírito do capitalismo e recorremos também a outros teóricos
como Bauman (1997), Lipovetsky (2007), Frankl (1994; 1997), Pierucci (2006), Prandi e
Pierucci (1996), Eliade (1978; 1992), Debord (1997) e outros que nos inspiraram nesta
pesquisa.

Within the context of the modern expression of religiosity, this study explores how the
methods of Ashtanga yoga is produce the experience of transformation for the individual
who practices them, and to a certain extent, his or her surroundings. Ethnographically, the
thesis concentrates on the main ritual of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga (AVY), Mysore style
sessions, as practiced by the community of practitioners at Sattva Yoga Shala in
Montreal. Through its execution, the ritual sets into motion the potential for
transformation. The practice of this yoga involves long-term discipline and a draconian
learning process whose gradual changes influence and/or carry over into the daily
experience of devotees. The thesis first summarizes the textual foundations of yoga, and
the historical context of both the rise of AVY, as well as its arrival in Montreal. To
solidify the analysis, the work continues with the ideology and praxis of the study group.
The heart of the analysis follows. In the analysis, I first examine potential modalities of
self-transformation; that is to say, general elements of ritual and those specific to AVY. I
go on to examine their impact, that is, what these modalities develop, allow and change
for practitioners. In this research, Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga is simultaneously an empirical
reality and an analytical category serving to deepen the anthropological knowledge of the
phenomenon of personal transformation according to the experiential framework of
modern religiosity.
